Chapter 42 The Victor

"Vitas?"

The mysterious wizard lowered his height.

With the help of his teacher Nectus, he dealt with these necromancers from other countries. Nectus was very interested in these people, especially how they knew so much about the Duchy of Vilan.

In comparison, Viya's so-called legacy is not that important.

The mysterious wizard knew that once his teacher was engrossed in something, it was difficult for him to spare any attention for anything else. Therefore, he left the rest to him to handle and report back later.

The mysterious wizard pulled his thoughts back to reality.

"Vitas killed them all by himself? How is that possible?"

The mess before him made him feel like he had seen a ghost.

How could one person kill so many wizards?

His only regret was that he had been so focused on fighting the enemy that he hadn't noticed how Vitas had defeated them.

Perhaps Vitas also knows magic? But that's unlikely.

The mysterious wizard found Vitas without much effort; now, in this vast place, only Vitas remained standing, and his distinctive armor served as a landmark.

"You really surprised me!"

"Who are you? Why do you look so familiar with me?"

Vitas pointed his sword at the mysterious wizard, who simply chuckled.

"If I were willing to tell you, I wouldn't be hiding my face with a mask."

The mysterious wizard's gaze bypassed Vitas and noticed the indistinguishable human-shaped mass behind him.

That must be the guy sent to suck the spellcaster's blood.

This is truly tragic.

"Is this what they call the mastermind behind it all?"

"I'm afraid not. This scale of attack should be organized by a big figure in the Noctis Undead Kingdom. This guy is probably just a student of that figure."

"Students are a real asset to you wizards."

"I don't deny that, and I'd love to introduce you to my teacher now."

"To be clear, I don't choose my employers, but I don't like wizards."

"Many people dislike wizards, but there are also many likable aspects to wizards. People like you can receive more preferential treatment from wizards."

"Shut up! You piece of trash who doesn't even dare to show me your real name or face, what makes you think you can hire me as your mercenary?"

"Hahaha, that's true, but I also have my own ways of knowing you. I think you have some secrets too."

Vitas took two steps back.

"I must warn you, if you try to use spells like mind reading, I will kill you instantly. I have ways to kill these undead, and I also have ways to kill you."

"To wizards, that's a temptation; for us, the unknown is the most alluring."

Vitas maintained a certain distance from the mysterious wizard, a distance from which Vitas only needed to take one step forward to strike his opponent.

Both Vitas and the mysterious wizard were convinced of this fact.

"Alright, we should call a truce for now. Although you're probably not entirely at ease, I guarantee with my honor that I will not do anything hostile to you for the next day and night."

"What's next?"

The mysterious wizard lowered his head and answered.

"Let me take a look at the reconnaissance spells I left behind."

"Shouldn't you be paying attention to these situations at all times?"

"Wizards are human too. Our attention span is limited, even if we've modified our bodies. We can maintain several reconnaissance spells simultaneously, but our bodies can't process all that information at once. You should understand that... Wait, what's going on?"

Vitas's lips began to twitch.

"What's wrong now?"

"Isn't that Alistair, Draco's tutor? Why is he here? Damn it, I was wondering why I hadn't seen anyone from Draco in the city. Turns out I just hadn't noticed them."

"Alistair?"

"Don't you know? This guy is one of Draco's three reading leaders, Alistair Frazier. To be honest, I'm not sure I could beat him in a one-on-one fight."

"What are they doing?"

The mysterious wizard's tone became even worse.

"Viya's monster, they actually found it. No, I was too arrogant. As Drak's leader, it would be easy for me to obtain information about Viya's monster in such a chaotic situation using wide-area reconnaissance."

"ha?"

Vitas frowned.

"Can I not get involved in this? There's no need for you wizards to make such a fuss over academic achievements. Whoever it is, just take Viya's monster away."

The mysterious wizard was speechless. From this perspective, Vitas really had no right to help him.

However, from another perspective...

"I can pay."

"Why are you all so interested in this?"

"Of course it's because Draco is interested in it. As the most accomplished wizard in the entire duchy, his interest in Viya's legacy is enough to warrant a bloodbath."

"Tsk, what a hassle."

Vitas didn't want to deal with these things; he even wanted to join Drak's forces to fight against Nexus.

In that case, it wouldn't be a bad thing for Delacroix to take Viya's inheritance with him.

Hey, in that case, wouldn't it be more convenient for me and Maximus to steal this inheritance together?

However, since Viya was assassinated by himself, there shouldn't be any problem handing over the inheritance, right?

Vitas began to think seriously.

"It's normal that you don't want to risk your life, after all, you've been doing quite well lately. Never mind, I'll go by myself."

"Hey, hey, hey, give me a flight spell, I want to go back too!"

"Flying spells? Once we've dealt with the enemies here, we can use teleportation spells."

The mysterious wizard chanted a spell, and a door appeared. This door was quite similar to the one Maximus had used in front of Vitas, but the specific details might be different.

"Let me see you off. If I lack avant-garde ideas, I can only rely on my own efforts."

"I have a feeling that something bad will happen if I step into this place."

"What's happened now is bad enough."

Vitas remained silent for a moment, then stepped into the portal with the mysterious wizard.

A few seconds later, they were back in the city.

The situation inside the city is better than expected.

"Only about one-twentieth of the area was attacked; their preparations were probably insufficient. I remember that a famous necromancer in history could summon a million undead with a single spell. Alright, let's part ways here. I'm going to find those two."

"Didn't Alistair come alone?"

"No, okay, I hope we can meet again, Vitas."

"goodbye."

The mysterious wizard finally left. Vitas took a deep breath, roughly determined his direction, and then headed towards the street where the battle had taken place.

"Damn it, after this is over, I need to ask the Viscount for a large sum of money to get some rest."
