Witch Hunter Rhapsody
Chapter 4 Armor
Vitas Vitalius has a very regular schedule when he is not on a mission. He wakes up when the sun has just risen above the horizon and is about a third of the way up, and then does a set of warm-up exercises that his father taught him when he was a child.
Next, he began to polish and maintain his sword. He carefully and meticulously drew his longsword and examined it closely for rust and damage—fortunately, there were none, as Vitas always took great care of his weapons.
However, the necessary cleaning and oiling still need to be done.
Vitas's residence is in the southwest corner of the city. It is a new house for a newlywed couple, although it was built about fifty years ago. It is called a new house because the couple renovated it after their marriage.
Nevertheless, in this place, which was considered to have barely escaped the slums, sewage would overflow from the toilets whenever it rained. On such occasions, the wife of the young couple would kindly ask her to leave, so as not to let such filth defile the knight's noble body.
Vitas no longer considered himself a knight after his order was destroyed; however, the desire for revenge that sustained him and allowed him to continue living required this identity.
He now makes a living by taking on all sorts of tricky jobs, from escorting caravans to collecting rare prey, stationing troops, or hunting thieves. As long as the price is right, Vitas doesn't particularly pick and choose his work.
The wealth he obtained from the three wizards he had killed was enough to support his continued pursuit of Nectus.
Nectus... that guy who should be cursed forever deceived himself with lies, destroyed his own knightly order with shameful traps and spells, and shattered his own glory.
Vitas must seek revenge, no matter the cost.
Vitas stopped what he was doing, realizing his anger and his loss of composure.
And then he heard the mournful cry of a black crow, and turning his head, he saw the crow, its feathers a dark gray, perched on his windowsill.
Vitas snapped out of his reverie and sheathed his sword.
The raven had human eyes, those strange eyes rolling around, and then its nasty cawing turned into human laughter, and then into Maximus's voice.
"Hehehe, my servant, seven days ago you successfully proved your abilities. It turns out that my ability to judge people is quite excellent among wizards. Being chosen by me to serve under me is your greatest fortune!"
Vitas didn't like Maximus; their meeting was just a coincidence. Vitas had acquired some good materials at the wizard black market when Maximus appeared before him and bought the dragon scales from him.
Maximus is an arrogant fellow who displays his insignia as a Drak student but refuses to reveal his true face or name, causing the wizards around him to avoid him. However, Vitas must seize the opportunity.
He was given a chance to prove himself: kill Via. Maximus wouldn't even reveal his own name until he succeeded, so that even if Vitas failed, it would only be revealed that one of Draco's students wanted to kill Via.
If Maximus hadn't been a student of Drak, an enemy of Nextu, Vitas would have already added this guy to his kill list.
"Be proud of yourself, Vitas. Now I need you to do something else for me. I've learned from my classmate that Raymond Maxwell is about to arrive; he's a student of Nectus, my teacher's greatest enemy. Isn't that strange? That a mere exile could attract the attention of my teacher's enemy?"
Viya's death caused a great stir in the city, the wizards were eager to make a move, and the local nobles were also getting involved. However, Vitas's materials were well-prepared, and his investigation was watertight. So far, he has not been able to find anything about himself.
Even Oram's disappearance didn't attract much attention, since many of Elizabeth's guests were mercenaries, and disappearances were nothing out of the ordinary.
Vitas controlled the expression on his face.
"I need you to figure out why all these people are investigating Viya's death."
"What benefit would I get?"
"ha?"
"I have proven my worth, now it is your turn to prove yours, Maximus."
For the first time in his life, Vitas saw a look of surprise on a raven's face.
Damn it, are all wizards this stupid?
"This... I... I will introduce you to my teacher, which is the highest honor for a fool like you, isn't it, Your Excellency?"
If there wasn't something he could still use, why would Vitas have let this wizard live until now? He turned his head and realized that there seemed to be something else in Maximus's words.
"Didn't you know that Viya's death would cause such a huge sensation?"
"No... Of course I know, and I was prepared to deal with it, but this reaction was a bit unexpected. You know, the wizarding world is not a game between two people; there are endless variables."
Vitas had no interest in any conflict between Via and Maximus, but if this guy was really so stupid as to be completely unaware of the consequences of his actions, would it be unwise to use him to get closer to a wizard who could help him?
Upon closer reflection, it's quite unbelievable that someone who is Draco's student would need to personally go to the wizard's black market to buy materials.
Moreover, she wasn't very wary of him when he approached her, and even urged him to assassinate Viya. Are such fools common among wizards?
Vitas had lost count of how many times he had resolved to abandon Maximus immediately after meeting a more reliable wizard, or to kill Maximus as proof of his abilities.
"I understand, but I have my own tasks today."
Vitas had already made arrangements; the apothecary in the city needed some human-faced spider shells, and he asked Vitas to help him collect them.
"It's alright, you'll have to come back eventually. If you're discovered, you'll die before me."
Vitas decided he had to kill this guy in the future.
After giving his instructions, the crow cawed and flew away. Vitas watched the crow disappear as it gradually vanished, pondering what he should do.
Wizards are never willing to leave their spires, and even if there is a reason why they have to leave, they will try their best to hide their tracks and make thorough preparations.
Then, you just need to make full preparations yourself.
Vitas hired a coachman to take him to Etherra's workshop.
He gave the driver three extra copper coins and asked him to wait outside the shop for a while.
Aethera's father's armor workshop was the best in the city, and her father was the best armorer in the city. Even Aethera's own forging skills were believed by many to be able to catch up with her father's one day.
Therefore, Vitas was not surprised to see the armor workshops overflowing with people.
He spent a lot of money here, repairing his armor, reforging its patterns, and getting along well with Etherra's father.
The steady, middle-aged man called out quite enthusiastically.
"You've arrived!"
"I have urgent business and need to put on my armor."
"Okay, I'll have someone help you get dressed right away."
"it is good."
Vitas did not resist.
He removed the longsword from his back, took the short sword from his waist, took off his coat, and neatly put on the close-fitting cotton armor lining. He then put on the breastplate, shoulder armor, segmented arm armor, gauntlets, greaves, and leg armor one by one.
Just as the man was about to help Vitas put on the helmet, Vitas took it himself and put it on his head. It was at this moment that he noticed it was Ether who was helping him put it on.
"Is the shop this quiet now?"
"You're one of our big clients, so your service attitude needs to be better!"
"Haha, little Aethera is putting armor on me? I never expected that!"
Vitas said, hanging the longsword on his side and the shortsword on the other.
His breathing could still be heard through the helmet, but it had become incredibly heavy. The armor weighed nearly 180 pounds, and simply wearing it and walking around was already the limit for an ordinary person.
Vitas stepped out, his heavy armor thumping discordantly against the wooden floor.
Vitas drew everyone's attention in the workshop.
They watched as the knight, clad in hideous armor and resembling a demon, stepped out—no, not like a knight, but more like a monarch ruling over hell.
"My God, who is this...?"
"I've never seen anyone like this before!"
"What glorious armor this is."
The voices of the people in the workshop grew softer as Vitas approached and louder as he moved away. Once Vitas stepped out the door, exclamations of admiration replaced all the previous discussions.
One woman's exclamation resonated with everyone: "What a brave warrior!"
The carriage that had been waiting outside the workshop gradually moved away, and a crow quietly landed on the roof of the carriage.
