Chapter 18 Maximus's Contact

"Hehehe, Sir Knight, it seems your situation isn't so bad after all. You're actually managing to hang out with those people."

"If you could introduce me to more jobs, I wouldn't have to work with these people."

"You just want to get to know my teacher's other students as soon as possible, hahaha. Don't blame me for being suspicious; wizards are just that kind of creature."

How come this guy's brain is suddenly working so well? Did he undergo some kind of wizard body modification experiment?

Maximus's crow scanned the surroundings, and only continued speaking after confirming that no one was paying attention.

"Oh dear, so much has happened lately. It's getting lively here too. A rather powerful wizard has moved in. It's probably Raymond. There are traces of magic everywhere in the city. I hope no other minor wizards or wizards from other countries come over. This small city can't afford to take on that."

"Perhaps. Does that Raymond have much information?"

Vitas's expression remained unchanged, even though he knew perfectly well that Raymond was dead.

The crow flapped its wings.

"Indeed, Raymond is a student of Nectus and an expert in souls and memories. While the brain-eating worm spell I used before can also read memories, the target of the spell loses their brain and can only read them. Raymond's memory spells, which focus on the soul, are probably even more superior."

"Oh? How much would you pay me if I stole the original text?"

"Whether you can steal it or not is one thing, but even if you do, I can't learn it. You probably don't understand, but my teacher studies the human body and its transformations. He is extremely cautious about the study of the soul. In fact, in the broadest field of wizarding research, the soul is something that cannot be easily touched."

The crow then issued a serious warning.

"In short, you'd better be careful. Once you run into that guy, no secret can be kept. If it gets exposed, I'll be in trouble too."

Vitas suddenly had a question.

"In that case, shouldn't you do something for me? Something like protective measures?"

"Because I trust you."

"Could it be that you don't know that kind of magic?"

"Hehehe, how could I, a future great wizard, not even know such a simple spell?"

Vitas now understood; the person before him truly didn't know how, and Maximus's perceived danger level decreased.

"Also, we need some materials recently. It won't interfere with your regular work; you can treat it as a part-time job."

Vitas had no interest in listening to any more of his nonsense.

"Just tell me, what do you want?"

"This is the list."

The crow spat out a roll of paper from its beak, which Vitas opened to examine; it contained some rather rare materials.

"I'll keep an eye on it."

"Hehehe, don't forget to investigate Viya's matter!"

Vitas really thought this guy was completely brainless. Everyone was focused on Viya, was he really going to run into her?

……

Maximus felt that the knight he had found was the best squire he could ever have.

She is highly capable and very intelligent; if used properly, she might rise to a high position among the teacher's many students.

"Maximus, what's the good news?"

"Alistair, I'm just waiting for the teacher to praise me."

The man named Alistair nodded; he didn't have much affection for his mediocre junior.

However, his junior was completely unaware that his talent was so mediocre that it did not match his ambition.

He was even willing to volunteer to get rid of Viya. To be honest, although they had tested each other at that time, Maximus would be finished if he chose to betray her.

More importantly, how did Maximus, who was inferior to Viya in both academics and practical skills, manage to kill Viya?

He prepared several contingency plans based on the two possible outcomes of the assassination: success and failure, but none of them were actually used.

If this guy suddenly awakened and killed someone, it would be barely acceptable, but Alistair tried to investigate but found no evidence.

Viya was poisoned to death, and in her own laboratory no less. What kind of special combination of spells was used?

The mage's curiosity particularly intrigued Alistair.

Could it be that Maximus hired someone to do this? But to be able to get close to the wizard's laboratory and release poison gas without leaving any trace is terrifying.

No matter how powerful or terrifying a wizard's strength is, they are still human after all, and this physical fragility is their greatest weakness.

Even if one transforms oneself into a lich through special necromancy, weaknesses are still inevitable.

Alistair felt he needed to figure out what was going on.

This means Maximus has to live a little longer.

As Draco Gresling's second-in-command, he absolutely could not allow it to be revealed that he was the mastermind behind Viya's death.

"By the way, Alistair, when will we have a result regarding the matter I asked you about?"

"Let's talk about it once Viya's matter is completely over."

Maximus's facial muscles twitched. He couldn't understand why Viya's death would have such a big impact. Wasn't she just an exiled wizard?

He couldn't directly ask the second-in-command, as their positions didn't allow him to do so.

If I want to leave my name in front of the teacher, I have to rely on him.

It's ironic, Vitas relied on himself, and he relied on Alistair; that's how cruel the wizarding world is.

"If there are any other tasks, feel free to assign them to me. I'd be happy to make some special contributions for you."

Alistair nodded and then left.

He did not tell Maximus that he had been ordered by his teacher to go to Ortham City in person, as there were still too many limitations to using magic remotely, and such matters required his personal presence.

It's a good opportunity to investigate how Maximus killed Viya.

It's like solving a math problem; even if you know the answer, you still won't feel satisfied if you don't understand the process. That's the essence of a wizard.

Alistair and Maximus entered the meeting room together.

On the seventh day of every week, they would be summoned by their teachers to present their work in a huge circular conference room, even though the teachers would not even glance at most of their work.

Maximus was preparing to demonstrate engraving magic circles on a sheep this time, and Alistair already knew that he would not be able to attract his teacher's attention this time either.

That's too simple. Experimenting on animals is mundane and not worth discussing. The only thing that really matters is human experimentation.
