Chapter 18: The Silver Troll
Trolls are humanoid monsters that are widely distributed throughout the world, from the polar wastelands in the north to the abyss of the desert in the south.
Their origins are unknown. These highly adaptable monsters, capable of regenerating severed limbs, have countless subspecies, including stone trolls with skin as hard as rock in towering mountains, water trolls that attack people and livestock in rivers and swamps, and even sea trolls that have been seen learning music from sirens on the beach.
Regardless of how many subspecies exist, trolls are all low-intelligence, cunning, and greedy hunters. They will devour all food they can get their hands on, including minerals and plants, until their bellies are full and they lie lazily on the ground to sleep, without ever stopping their appetite.
The vast underground mine shafts were mostly submerged by gushing groundwater, and damp moss grew on the rugged rock walls, emitting clusters of eerie fluorescent light.
A silver-white giant lay on a narrow platform of less than 100 square meters, his chest heaving and his shouts thundering, causing the cave to tremble slightly.
"By Radley, has my luck finally turned around this time...?" Kelly stared greedily at the snoring silver sculpture, a fat troll whose tough skin was covered with spikes that looked like mercury.
If this were a troll with muscles made of silver, they would definitely be rich; if not, they are still rich.
A rare troll variant! How much can I get for it from a mage?
Oha's reaction was that of a stray dog; when Marcus saw the snoring Silver Mountain, he felt something was amiss.
Trolls are not trash like goblins. Do you think a few lousy little fish can take a slap?
In response, Marcus searched through his ever-present "Warrior's Handbook" and found two records of deaths at the hands of trolls.
Troll meat tastes really good; it's big enough to fill my stomach, but why does my stomach feel itchy...?
—Bowen, the gourmet, vowed to eat all the world's delicacies, but died from his stomach swelling after eating raw troll flesh.
Trolls are all cowards!
—Walsh the Mad Axe, thrown off a precipice while facing a troll charge head-on.
Well, don't eat troll meat, and don't engage in charges; the chances of dying are slim.
Marcus put the manual away and listened to the tactical plan of the stray dog team.
Kelly took out a bright red glass bottle that was clearly extremely expensive from her backpack, applied a thick, blood-like ointment to O'Ha and Duncan's weapons, then turned back and hesitated slightly as she looked at the baton at Marcus's waist:
"According to the previous rules, it's a 30/70 split."
This is an invitation to join the battle; as previously agreed, Rye Wine was only responsible for the salvage work.
Marcus nodded, finding it barely acceptable. What he wanted most was still that rare card. What strange thing had the goblin dug up? It couldn't possibly be this troll, could it?
The ointment was applied to the baton, but visually, no change occurred.
The dwarf sighed, said nothing, handed the dusty shield to Marcus, raised his crossbow, and nocked an arrow.
Two warriors stood at the forefront. Marcus wanted to ask about the specific tactics, but Oha, whose soul had already been captivated by the silver, was panting heavily, with bloodshot veins spreading from the corners of his eyes to his pupils.
"Waha!"
"Um?"
After a thunderous roar, Marcus felt a gust of wind brush past his ear as Ohar, wielding a single-edged battle axe, launched a textbook-perfect warrior charge straight at the troll.
The stray dog team had excellent teamwork. The orcs charged forward, Kelly followed closely behind, and Duncan raised his crossbow and fired an arrow at the troll's vital spot.
The arrow, coated with blood-red ointment, ignited a fiery spark upon friction with the air, transforming into a flaming arrow that pierced the troll's groin.
The stinging pain roused the slumbering troll, which howled and pounded the strange arrows that were burning with blood. With a roar, it shook the mine.
Oha was only a beat slower than the arrow. Just as he was about to hit the troll, he paused, leaving a trail on the ground. He swung his battle axe forward with momentum and smashed it into the troll's side.
With a clang, the resounding clang of metal clashing was deafening. The battle axe cleaved a visible wound into the troll's tough skin, and through the bleeding wound, Ohar could see gleaming silver muscles...
"Get out of the way!"
Kelly's hasty warning didn't allow Ohar to dodge the troll's slap. The enormous, millstone-like hand landed on the orc's studded leather armor-protected back, and amidst the painful roar, the faint sound of bones cracking could be heard.
Ohar was sent flying by the troll, tumbling across the platform. He grabbed the battle axe, tried several times to get up, but finally collapsed to the ground.
Zhan Diao launched an attack, Zhan Diao met the challenge head-on, Zhan Diao suffered heavy damage, and Zhan Diao's fate is unknown.
Their reckless and impulsive tactics made Marcus shake his head. This was no experienced adventurer team; they were clearly reckless fools who had been blinded by silver.
But he had a vague feeling that something was wrong. An inexperienced team of adventurers couldn't possibly frighten the cunning goblins into hiding in their caves.
Kelly dodged the troll's follow-up attack, turned her head to check on Ohar's condition, and ordered Duncan to heal him immediately. She then saw the warrior slowly walking behind her and angrily rebuked him:
"What are you standing there for! You should have covered Oha's charge!"
Marcus walked unhurriedly toward the trolls' location: "Most of the warriors I know died on the charge; only fools charge."
He glanced at the orc who had been slapped by the troll and was now in critical condition, adding to the credibility of his statement: "Take this Mr. Stonebreaker, for example; it seems he can't break silver."
Kelly became extremely angry:
"So now you..."
"Now follow my orders!" Marcus growled, observing the troll's movements; the monster was about to get up.
"When this monster gets up, Barding and Duncan, aim for its eyes. I'll pull it, and Kelly, you'll fix its feet and lead it to the water. If this thing is made entirely of silver, it'll be incredibly heavy and won't be able to float! Got it? Don't be greedy and hesitate to use your strength!"
"Understood." Bardin approved the plan, raising his crossbow aim to estimate the height the troll would reach when it stood up.
Duncan hesitated for a moment, crouching beside the wailing orc, waiting for Kelly's command through the dim light from the mossy vegetation in the mine.
"Listen to him."
The troll regenerated at an astonishing speed. The crossbow bolts were slowly squeezed out of the wounds, and the arrow wounds in the vital areas grew granulation tissue at a visible rate. Only the wound that Oha had just slashed in the abdomen was suppressed in its recovery speed by the magical power of the blood ointment.
Marcus slowly walked to Kelly's side, observing the troll's condition. He saw the millstone-thick arm supporting him on the ground, and the troll bending its knees in preparation to get up.
"You'd better aim better, dwarf brother."
"Nobody's more reliable than a dwarf, buddy."
The troll stood up, its four-meter-tall body resembling that of a giant. Its large, rugged mouth was filled with sharp teeth, and its eyes, no bigger than eggs, looked exceptionally small against its ferocious face.
swoosh~
swoosh~
The crossbow strings snapped open, and Bardin's crossbow and Duncan's crossbow fired in succession. Marcus thought the dwarf would need to fire a second arrow, but the severed hand was very steady. Before the troll could even see what the two small wooden sticks that were being shot at were, they pierced his eye socket, splattering a bright red flower of blood.
Roar!
The troll pressed its hands against its eyeballs, while Marcus also fixed his gaze on its gleaming silver knees.
As for whether you would be afraid when facing a four-meter-tall giant monster?
Those who are afraid are not worthy of going all in.
