Chapter 44: Subtle Influence

As I stepped out of the cafeteria, the afternoon sun shone warmly on my face.

Unfortunately, the scorching gray haze in the air lingered, otherwise basking in the sun in the courtyard of the campus would have been a pleasant pastime.

Joel waited for him at the school gate, while Li En planned to go back first to bring the books from the classroom.

"You rascal!" Blake chased after Li En like a nimble badger, asking, "When did you meet Sheriff Greg?"

"Before, due to a chance encounter," Li En answered Blake's question as he walked towards the classroom, "I was arrested by Scotland Yard, wasn't I? It was Inspector Greg who dealt with me back then."

Upon hearing this, Blake suddenly realized, "Oh, so you're the young nobleman arrested by Scotland Yard. There's been some talk about it in London's aristocratic circles."

Li En never expected that such a trivial matter would circulate in the social circles of the nobility. For her father, this must have been quite a shameful thing.

Fortunately, he didn't care that much about the face of the nobility.

The two quickly arrived at the classroom, where Li En packed up his books, preparing to leave the academy.

As soon as they stepped out of the classroom, Professor Eli, who was walking from a distance in the tiled corridor of the teaching building, also saw Li En and Black.

"Mr. Wells, Mr. Raymond," Professor Eli approached the two, calling out Li En's name first, "Where are you headed?"

Li En recounted the whole story, and Professor Eli's eyes showed a hint of surprise.

"Scotland Yard? Well, there's really nothing we can do then," Professor Eli didn't stop Li En, but still kindly reminded him, "Will cooperating with Scotland Yard's secondment affect preparations for the Golden Dawn Open? If you think so, I can ask the academy to coordinate something, at least until the Open is over..."

Li En shook his head and declined Professor Eli's offer, "It's alright, Professor, I don't think it will have any impact on my preparations."

"Moreover, I think Scotland Yard approached me because I have considerable talent in the occult. If I can apply the occult knowledge I have learned outside of the academy, it will also help me solidify my theories and deepen my understanding."

Upon hearing Li En's words, Blake gave him a look that said, "Whoever you are, get off my good buddy right now."

These polite words, this fake smile—is this still the Lee En Wells I know?

Your behavior, driven by the pursuit of credits, has truly disheartened me!

"So you're a practical type after all?" Professor Eli was quite pleased with Li En's polite words. "In that case, I won't stop you. How far have you progressed in your study of that book, 'Interpretation of Hermetic Texts,' which I gave you before?"

Li En answered honestly, "Chapter Four, Professor, but I'm a little stuck. It seems I'm lacking in some knowledge, so I'm currently filling in the gaps in my understanding at the London Library."

Professor Eli breathed a sigh of relief when he heard that Li En had gotten stuck in Chapter 4.

If Li En were to openly claim that he had already studied up to chapters five and six, Professor Eli would really have to wonder if Li En's brain structure was different from theirs.

"Well, it's alright, there's no rush," Professor Eli wiped the cold sweat from his forehead. "As I said before, if you have any questions about anything, including page 217 and the content before that, feel free to ask me, and I'll help you understand."

Li En responded and looked up slightly, suddenly noticing a label that had appeared abruptly above Professor Eli's head.

Name: Eli Enso

[Replicable label: Occult genius]

Please select the label you want to copy.

Li En was not surprised by this, because this was precisely the effect of the label of genius of occultism being upgraded to Lv3.

He can subtly influence the scholars around him, increasing the probability that they will be labeled as geniuses in the mysticism field.

The label that appears on Professor Eli's head is a manifestation of this special effect.

"Let's make the copy tomorrow. Sheriff Greg is waiting for me."

After finalizing his plans, Li En bid farewell to Professor Eli and headed towards the school gate.

Blake was about to give chase when he heard Professor Eli's cold voice behind him.

"Mr. Raymond, do you know what your score was on the last pop quiz?"

Blake turned around awkwardly. "Shouldn't it be third class?"

Professor Eli frowned slightly. "It's acceptable, Mr. Raymond, but that's a very dangerous assessment."

The University of Michigan uses a grading system, namely first class, second class, and third class.

Only after the third grade is it considered passing.

Professor Eli only appreciates geniuses; he will even kick out idiots or mediocre students from the classroom.

So far, quite a few students in the class have been kicked out.

Blake's last quiz was basically a close call, falling into a very dangerous range.

"If you have some free time, why not learn from your friend Mr. Wells and have him tutor you in the mysticism? Or, you could change your trousers instead of wandering around campus in wet ones, Your Excellency."

Blake lowered his head, revealing a noticeable stain on his crotch where soup had soaked through. The University of Michigan students around him occasionally glanced at him, then whispered and left.

Just as he reached the entrance of the University of Michigan, Li En heard a familiar scream. He initially guessed that it was Blake's scream.

"Mr. Wells," Joel nodded as he stood before a completely black carriage with an extremely understated atmosphere, "please get in."

This carriage is slightly different from ordinary carriages. There is only a small police marking on the side of the carriage. From a distance, it looks more like an ordinary dark-colored private car if you don't look closely.

The entire carriage was enclosed, with narrow, tall windows and somewhat dark-colored glass. The thick wooden frames and iron fittings acted like shackles, tightly binding the carriage.

Stepping onto the side steps, Li En climbed into the carriage. The carriage didn't have the soft cushions of aristocratic carriages; instead, it had more practical hard seats.

Joel got into the car, closed the door, and signaled to the driver that they could set off.

Joel finally spoke as the carriage shook.

"Mr. Wells, can you guess why I've come to see you?"

Without pausing for long, Li En directly stated his thoughts, "I think it's because the King of England publicly criticized Scotland Yard, right? Two more bodies have been found in the River Wandall, and the London serial killer is becoming increasingly arrogant; even the royal family can't stand it anymore."

Joel agreed, "That's right. Scotland Yard is under a lot of pressure because of the London serial killer, but because of the various strange phenomena, I personally think the direction of the investigation should be changed."

"So, your investigation is starting to lean towards the study of the occult?" Li En looked into Joel's eyes, which was the only reason he could think of for Joel to come to him.

Joel didn't deny it, but he took out snuff from his pocket, flicked a pinch, and took a drag to relieve the craving for cigarettes caused by the pressure of solving the case.

"Yes, we had previously made requests to professors at various universities who had studied the occult, but they were so focused on their own research that they were very slow to respond to Scotland Yard."

"While it does help in solving cases, the inefficiency is simply unbearable to look at."

Lee En finally understood what Joel meant.

"So, you must have heard about my reputation at the University of Michigan and think that I must have unique insights into the mysticism."

"And because I'm a student, unlike those highly respected professors who are so focused on research that they can't cooperate with Scotland Yard's investigations, or who even put on airs and give you attitude, I'm of good use, right?"

Joel smiled, a rare occurrence for him. His venomous eyes softened with the smile, losing some of their chilling and terrifying quality.

"The truth may be harsh, but it's true," Joel said bluntly. "You have the right to refuse."

Lee En looked up at the slightly blurry but soon-to-be-formed label on Joel's head, pondered for a moment, and gave his answer.

"I can assist Scotland Yard," Lee replied, "but I have only one request: I need to know the details of the case and participate in the investigation."

Joel was about to say something, but before he could speak, he was interrupted by Lee.

"But aside from questions related to the occult, all my insights must be conveyed to Scotland Yard in your voice; I myself will not appear on the scene."

After thinking for a moment, a word popped into Li En's mind.

"You can think of me as a police detective consultant."

consultant?

Joel didn't quite understand why Lee would make such a request, but the request itself was reasonable.

"Can."

Joel agreed without hesitation.

Li En secretly breathed a sigh of relief, then gestured for him to proceed.

"Now, please tell me the details of this case."
