Chapter 32: The Road Without a Headline
After having lunch at home, Li En tidied up her things, picked up the silver candlestick from her bedside, and headed to the library.
Normally, even on a Sunday morning, a college student like Li En should go to the college chapel for worship, but since he had already "killed" the morning at Scotland Yard, there was naturally no need for him to go.
Upon arriving at the library, Li En looked around; Caesar had not yet arrived.
Monroe, who had just started working, was acting as a tea server and was a little overwhelmed, so she could only greet Li En politely.
Without disturbing the other party's work, Li En first went to the familiar bookshelf, found the book "Cuiyu Lu Shuzheng", and glanced at the title page.
"Good morning, good afternoon, or good evening, pioneer of truth, please answer my questions and guide the lost sheep."
"Tell me your confusion."
These were the same two lines again, and no one answered on the title page.
Li En scratched his head, wondering if the person who left that message hadn't seen his reply yet.
After putting the book back, Li En didn't dwell on the matter too much. He casually found a table to sit down and opened the book that Professor Eli had given him.
The label of "genius of mysticism" has been upgraded to Lv2, which not only gave Li En more mystic knowledge, but also increased his ability to learn mystic knowledge from 100% to 150%.
This improvement was remarkable. Originally, Li Enlian struggled to even read the first page, but after getting the Lv2 label, his understanding of the content on the first page became effortless.
"So that's what it means," Li En said, comparing the text with his own knowledge of occultism. "Now I understand."
Pages one through ten comprise the contents of the first chapter of the entire book. Li En quickly read through the whole thing and completely mastered the content of the first chapter, to the point that he could practically recite it from memory.
"call……"
Letting out a sigh of relief, Li En quickly skimmed through the contents of Chapter Two. It was subtly different from Chapter One, but essentially it was knowledge within the same discipline, with similar levels of difficulty.
Starting around page 20, the book becomes significantly more difficult to understand.
This is clearly not a book intended for a student; it is more like a theoretical book for experts and professors to conduct in-depth research.
"Mr. Wells, cough cough cough... you're here quite early."
Just as Li Engang turned his gaze away from the words, he heard Caesar's slightly weak voice.
Wearing a dark wool coat draped over his shoulders, Caesar sat opposite Li En, holding an old book in his lap with a cover worn smooth by time, the text on it barely legible.
"Cosmic Isomorphism, Gnosticization, and Late Classical Interpretation in Hermetic Texts? That's tasteful. I have a copy of that book too; it's quite profound," Caesar said with a smile. "It seems you've made ample preparations for the Golden Dawn Open."
Li Enwei nodded slightly. "I know my talent might be average, so I can only work hard and rely on my own sweat and effort to catch up with those geniuses."
Caesar was surprised to hear these words from Lee En, and he clapped his hands, saying, "Great job, I support you."
As he spoke, he looked at Monroe, who was not far away.
"Call Mr. Phoenix over as well; I have something to discuss with you."
Li En then called Monroe over.
When Monroe walked up to the two of them, Lee suddenly noticed that above Monroe's head, a faint label character, just like Zoe's, had appeared.
This was different from the vague feeling he had when his father and Caesar were surrounded by fog, preventing Li En from spying on them. It was a feeling that was yet to be born, about to take shape.
"Will Monroe soon have a new label?"
Li En was somewhat expectant, wondering what kind of labels would appear.
As Monroe sat down, Caesar leisurely took out a small amber glass bottle from his pocket and drank the tincture inside in one gulp.
"Ahem..." Caesar coughed and said, "Regarding the candlestick you asked me to inquire about, I've looked into the situation for you."
Upon hearing this, Monroe immediately asked, "What is that thing? Is it dangerous for Wells?"
Li En looked up and saw that the label on Monroe's head became clearer after Monroe finished speaking.
Caesar gestured for Monroe to calm down. "First of all, it's not anything very dangerous. It was something the church confiscated from a French nobleman during the Anglo-French War."
"It doesn't have any special effects, and there's nothing wrong with using it normally."
"But if you place three candles made of whale oil on the candlestick at the same time, the situation is different."
Caesar's expression suddenly turned serious.
"According to records, this candlestick is a window that allows you to break through the limitations of the material world and see things that normal senses cannot capture."
"However, there are risks in peering into things beyond the material world, because a force can interfere with you."
As a genius of the occult, Monroe reached a conclusion almost immediately.
However, Li En has the label of a Level 2 occult genius, so he can draw conclusions faster than him.
"Fate, isn't it?"
Hearing Li En's answer, Caesar smiled with satisfaction.
Monroe, however, was surprised that Lee's reaction was even faster than his own, and his eyes were full of surprise and admiration.
“That’s right,” Caesar continued, “The fate in Hermeticism can be simply understood as a force that binds us to the material world.”
"All scholars want to use the power of mysticism or unusual objects to break free from the control of fate and approach truth, divinity, and immortality, but I haven't heard of any successful examples yet."
Caesar's explanation was very detailed; he not only found out the origin and effects of the silver candlesticks, but also shared with him the method of use in great detail.
Li En picked up the silver candlestick and examined it with the eyes of an investigator.
Soon, several keywords began to flash into Li En's mind as if by magic.
"peep……
"Danger and reward..."
"flame……
"Spirituality..."
All four keywords match Caesar's explanation.
Peeping refers to breaking through the limitations of fate and seeing things that ordinary senses cannot perceive in the material world.
Danger and benefit refer to the impact when fate is altered.
The flame refers to a lit candle.
The term "spiritual" specifically refers to candles made with whale oil, as whales are considered messengers of the spirit.
"Thank you, Caesar, your information was very useful." Li En thanked Caesar sincerely.
The clues provided by Caesar were of great significance to the keywords that Li En obtained from the opal.
Meanwhile, Monroe grabbed Lee's shoulder and said seriously, "Wells, promise me you won't use that silver candlestick for any occult experiments, okay?"
Li En didn't understand why Monroe reacted so strongly. "Why? Is there some precedent?"
"I can't say," Monroe said, though he was reluctant to say it in front of Caesar, an outsider, "but I have to tell you that when you try to reach things beyond the material world, there is no turning back."
"You must keep moving forward, on a road with no turning back and no end in sight."
"Once you stop, or try to turn back, you'll fall into an abyss from which you'll never be able to climb out!"
Caesar watched Monroe's reaction without saying anything, but silently picked up his teacup and took a sip of the warm tea.
Li En really wanted to say that he had been exposed to those things long ago.
But before Li En could utter a word, he noticed that the illusory characters that had been hovering above Monroe's head, barely visible and not yet fully formed, had finally materialized into a physical form.
[Name: Monroe Phoenix]

Li En was stunned.
What kind of label is this?
