Chapter 31: Suspicion
Joel stared at Li En in disbelief. "How did you do that? A trick? Magic? Or sorcery? Do you guys in the occult teach this?"
Li En shook his finger. "Of course not, this is my real skill."
"I can guarantee that if you give me a gun, I can accurately hit anything within ten meters, even a tiny biting fly."
Joel waved his hand. "Don't brag. You can throw stones and hit bricks, but it's a different story with a musket."
"If you don't believe me, you can give me a gun to try."
"This is Scotland Yard, how could I possibly agree to such an outrageous request?"
Joel declined Lee's offer and stood up. "Would you like some tea? I'm a little thirsty."
Lee En wanted to ask if they had coffee, but since this was someone else's territory, it was better to listen to Joel.
"OK, thanks."
Lee stayed in the West Shack at Scotland Yard until noon.
Midway through, Joel was called away by the police, probably because it was getting light and the streets were gradually becoming more crowded with more officers on duty. After giving them a few instructions, he left.
Sitting on a bench, Li En yawned and looked at the bustling street outside the fence, feeling an unprecedented urge to read.
"I want to go to school..."
Just as Li En was processing the occult knowledge he had acquired the day before, a figure that Li En recognized suddenly ran out from outside the fence.
"Li En!" Zoe called out to him through the fence. She was wearing a long black robe, and Li En hadn't noticed her at first. "Are you alright?"
Seeing Zoe arrive, Lee En stood up and walked to the fence, saying to Zoe, "It's alright, sister, I'm fine."
"It's alright, it's alright," Zoe said, sounding alarmed, as if she was genuinely terrified to see Lee En with missing limbs. "I heard everything from the Scotland Yard officers. Are you hurt?"
Before Li En could reply, a police officer walked over and nodded in the direction of the double-decker exit.
"Mr. Wells, you have been released on bail and can leave now."
"Thank you," Li En said, and was escorted out of the exit by the police officer.
Seeing Li En come out of the shed, Zoe quickly went to greet him and hugged him.
Once she was sure the person in her arms was real, Zoe breathed a sigh of relief, her voice trembling with tears, "You scared me to death! Do you know how terrified I was when Scotland Yard officers came to my door this morning after you didn't come home last night?"
"I'm really worried you'll run into that London serial killer, get killed by him, and have your body thrown into the Wandal River!"
Actually, I almost met him.
Li En didn't say those words aloud, but simply patted Zoe on the back, "It's alright, I'm back now, aren't I? Did Father get home last night?"
Zoe wiped away the tears from the corners of her eyes and nodded. "He's back. When he came back yesterday, he reeked of alcohol, and his evening suit was covered in soot. I asked him what happened, and he said he ran into some thugs on his way back and even got into a fight with them."
Ok?
Li En frowned slightly.
Yesterday, his father should have been taken home by the Golden Cat Salon's carriage. How could he have encountered thugs on the road?
Are your clothes covered in coal dust?
Li En lowered her head and glanced at the hem of her clothes.
His clothes also had a small amount of coal dust on them, because he had passed through an industrial area yesterday.
strangeness……
After thinking for a moment, Li En changed the subject.
"Sister, how much did you pay to bail me out?"
Zoe sniffed, released Lee, and a hint of confusion flashed in her teary eyes. "What money? I brought bail money, but I haven't paid it yet. I thought you had."
"Me?" Li En patted his empty pockets. "I've already run out of money. Where would I get bail money?"
Seeing Zoe's bewildered expression, Lee immediately realized that someone else had bailed him out.
He reached the exit of the western shack and asked the officer who had just released him, "Sir, may I ask who paid my bail?"
The officer smiled and shook his head. "I'm sorry, the other party doesn't allow me to reveal my identity to you, but I must say, the carriage they're riding in is very unusual; they're definitely not ordinary people."
Not an ordinary person?
Lee En didn't recall ever knowing anyone of such high status; the most he knew was Blake, a viscount's son.
But this guy definitely wouldn't rent a carriage like this, so who paid his bail?
At the main gate of Scotland Yard, a low-key servant emerged from the heavy brick archway and approached a black carriage parked by the roadside.
"Your Highness," the attendant bowed to the person inside the carriage and said in a low voice, "I have paid the bail, and Mr. Wells should have been released."
"Cough cough cough..." A coughing sound came from inside the carriage, followed by a sickly and weak voice, "Well, that's fine after you pay. Just leave and take me to the London Library afterwards."
The attendant responded with a sound of agreement before asking, "Your Highness, forgive my presumption, but why spend tens of pounds on bail for an insignificant baron's son?"
The passenger in the carriage responded to the attendant with silence at first, before speaking: "Because my afternoon in the London Library was so boring."
"As a new friend I met in the library, I want to talk to him more. If he were locked up in Scotland Yard, who would I be able to talk to?"
"Besides, he's treated me to sandwiches before, so it wouldn't hurt to help him out."
Upon hearing the passenger's reply, the attendant immediately understood what the passenger meant.
"Understood, Your Highness, everything is as you wish."
The attendants boarded the carriage, the silent coachman cracked his whip, and the steeds began to pull the heavy carriage along.
I blended into the noisy crowd.
……
After being released on bail, Li En went home first.
Upon seeing Li En return, Lena touched her full chest and breathed a sigh of relief, "Thank God, young master, you're safe and sound."
Taking off his slightly dirty coat, Li En handed it to Lena, giving her a reassuring smile. "Thank you for your concern, but I'm fine."
As Li En entered the living room, he glanced at his father, who was sitting on the sofa reading The Times.
The characters above his head, except for his name, were still shrouded in fog, as if influenced by some mysterious force, refusing Li En's prying eyes.
"Father."
Li En shouted.
Fold the newspaper in half, and the father and Li En met eyes and nodded slightly.
"It's good that you're back. Are you alright?"
"no."
"Um."
The simple response did indeed sound like the way a father and son who didn't know how to express affection would chat.
Lee En decided to first put her father on the watch list of potential killers.
However, the most urgent task is to go to the London Library first.
Perhaps Caesar has already obtained some information about the silver candlesticks.
