Diary of Getting Rich Quick in the South

Chapter 12 Is this woman really going to keep me as a mistress?

Seeing that my cousin was about to elaborate, I quickly interrupted him.

"Stop, stop, stop! Besides these, is there anything else? Like discovering that Sister Wan was secretly chatting with someone behind your back or something?"

My cousin slapped my thigh: "That's exactly what I wanted to say! Several times I've gotten up at night and seen her go to the bathroom, where she'd stay for half an hour. Once I secretly stood outside the bathroom and heard her talking to someone. You know, she buys all those things and talks to someone in the middle of the night behind my back, could she be video chatting with someone?"

His words made me nervous, and I pressed him for details: "Did you find any chat logs or anything like that?"

"No!"

My cousin sighed and said with a troubled expression, "I can't check her phone without concrete evidence. Could you take a look for me secretly?"

I gave a wry smile: "If you can't get Wan-jie's phone, then I certainly can't."

After a pause, I said seriously, "Besides, I don't think Wan-jie could have cheated. You must be mistaken. If you really can't believe it, just confront her directly. It's better than guessing here. Many couples end up getting divorced because of mutual suspicion."

My cousin frowned. "Could it be that I've misunderstood?"

I nodded and said, "You know Wan-jie's personality best. She even gave up her job for you. They say you love everything about someone. If she didn't truly like you, do you think she would treat me this well? She helped me find a job and even made my bed for me."

"She went to the bathroom to chat in the middle of the night, most likely because she didn't want to disturb your rest, or maybe she was having a heart-to-heart talk with her best friend and didn't want you to hear it."

"Instead of scaring yourself here, you should find a good opportunity to have an honest talk with Sister Wan. If there are problems, solve them; if there are no problems, live your life in peace. This is much better than mutual suspicion and internal strife."

After listening to my well-reasoned explanation, my cousin stared at me with a surprised look.

"Your boss Zhang was giving you such obvious hints, and you said you couldn't see it? When you were trying to enlighten me, you analyzed everything so logically. Are you really that clueless, or are you just pretending to be stupid?"

I felt a little embarrassed by what he said, so I chuckled twice and explained.

"Outsiders see things more clearly, and most importantly, I trust Sister Wan's character. Instead of guessing with me here, I think you should go home and ask her. You're often away from home for days on end. If this continues, something will definitely happen."

My cousin thought for a moment, then picked up the glass of baijiu in front of him and drank it all in one gulp, before patting my shoulder heavily.

"You're right. I'll go back and ask. This has been driving me crazy these past few days. If nothing's wrong, I'll treat her well from now on. If something's really wrong, then we'll get a divorce!"

Seeing that he had come to his senses, I breathed a sigh of relief and advised, "When you get back, be sure to talk to him properly, and whatever you do, don't resort to violence."

"cut!"

My cousin scoffed, "Do you think I'm the kind of person who would hit a woman?"

If you don't hit women, then was the slap mark on Sister Wan's face from me last time?

My cousin left, but I couldn't fall asleep, tossing and turning, afraid that the two of them would start arguing. I kept staring at my phone.

It wasn't until after 2 a.m. that my cousin called.

"Brother, things are cleared up now. I misunderstood your sister-in-law. The woman she was chatting with is a female doctor on night shift at the infertility hospital. She bought that thing to help her conceive. I was wondering when they came out with a gourd-shaped one. Her taste is even more bizarre than mine... Hey, hey, don't hit me, don't hit me..."

Then Su Wan's shy voice came from the other end of the phone: "Wang Long, are you trying to kill me? You tell everyone everything. How am I supposed to face anyone now?"

"I was wrong, I was wrong, honey, don't pinch me, your ear's going to fall off... Chen An, you should get some rest, I'm hanging up now."

After hanging up the phone, I finally felt relieved.

It's good that everything's alright; it seems the young couple has made up.

I was really afraid that my cousin's phone call would be to tell me that he had killed someone.

I've been able to go to work without worry these past few days, and my colleagues are all very easy to get along with.

Zhang Dongting would also come over to check on me from time to time, asking if I was adapting well to the job, if running around doing business was tiring, and if I had encountered any difficulties.

On two occasions, when I was out on business and didn't have time to eat lunch, she even brought me food.

This special care stood out conspicuously in the eyes of her colleagues.

Many people joked with me, saying that they had been with the company for several years and had never seen General Manager Zhang care so much about any newcomer, asking if I had hooked up with the boss's wife.

Some people joked that I might be the boss's boyfriend, and that I was deliberately coming down to conduct a surprise visit to the grassroots level.

Every time, I would blush with embarrassment and could only awkwardly laugh it off.

After this happened several times, I even started to doubt whether what my cousin had told me before was all nonsense.

Since the welcoming banquet that night, Bai Yan has never given me a hard time again, and she even smiles when she speaks.

I don't know if she was trying to avoid Xu Mingde's harassment or if she genuinely wanted to help me get familiar with the business, but whenever she went out to meet individual clients, she would take me with her.

After running around with them for the past few days, I've truly realized how tiring this job really is.

Every day, I run around to markets and factories under the scorching sun, going door-to-door to connect with suppliers, negotiate freight rates, and check documents.

My feet were sore from all the rubbing at the end of the day, and my whole body felt like it was falling apart.

Being tired is one thing, but the hardest part is having to read people's expressions.

Most customers are very picky. They demand extremely low shipping costs and still find fault and make all sorts of demands. They get angry if things don't go their way.

In order to close deals and retain clients, I have no choice but to patiently put on a smiling face.

It's common to be so busy all day that you don't even have time to eat a hot meal.

Most importantly, after running around for so many days, not a single deal has been closed.

Bai Yan was used to this and even comforted me.

"Xiao Chen, don't complain about being tired. Many big shots started as entry-level salespeople. Every setback is a step in accumulating experience. Consider it tuition we have to pay when we enter the industry. You'll get used to it later."

Just then, the shop owner who sells photocopies called me and said my ID card was ready, asking when I would come to pick it up.

"So fast? Wasn't it supposed to be seven days?" I asked in surprise.

"That's what you call professionalism."

"Boss, I probably won't be able to get there until around 5:30."

After hanging up the phone, the weight that had been hanging over my heart finally lifted.

These past two days, Su Wan has been calling to ask if I've received my ID card yet. I've given her vague answers several times. If I don't get the card soon, she's really going to force me to go to the police station.

The HR department is urging me to quickly get my ID card and complete the paperwork, otherwise I won't be able to get a permanent position.

I finally made it to the end of the workday and was about to leave when Zhang Dongting stopped me and asked me to come to her office.

"Mr. Zhang, is there anything I can help you with?"

Zhang Dongting rolled her eyes at me: "Everyone says you should call me Sister Ting in private."

As she spoke, she went around behind her desk, took out a King Glory Department Store gift card, and handed it to me: "I'm going to the department store later to buy myself a suit."

After saying that, she added, "This time I can't buy those cheap 120 yuan sets from street vendors anymore, I have to buy the 5,000 yuan sets."

A suit that costs five thousand yuan—I've never worn anything that expensive in my life.

I asked nervously, "Sister Ting, isn't this too expensive? You just gave me cigarettes a few days ago, and now you're giving me clothes."

First she gave me cigarettes, now she's giving me clothes. Is this woman really trying to keep me as a mistress?
