Chapter 32 Haunted House
Behind the door was complete darkness.
The darkness was absolute and thick, like an abyss that could swallow all light. The beam of a flashlight pierced through, but could only illuminate a distance of five or six meters ahead, before disappearing without a trace, as if swallowed whole by something.
Su Mu gripped his pistol and strode forward.
Beside him, Lin Yuwei held a shield and stood to his side, keeping a distance of about half a meter between them.
The sound of my feet rustling on the ground was faint.
Su Mu glanced down... The ground was covered with a thick layer of dust and some messy footprints. He didn't know if they were left by previous tourists, or... something else entirely.
Strange picture frames hung on the walls on both sides.
As the flashlight swept across the scene, distorted human faces came into view.
Some were screaming, some were crying, and some had completely dislocated facial features, with eyes where mouths were and mouths crooked to the base of ears. Most eerie of all, the eyes of these faces had been gouged out, revealing dark, gaping holes, as if something was peering out from within.
Su Mu moved the flashlight away and continued walking forward.
Several broken chandeliers hung from the ceiling, their frames rusted and wires exposed, swaying slightly and creaking softly as they passed by.
The corridor is very long.
It is much longer than it appears from the outside.
Su Mu counted his steps and walked about twenty meters. There was another turn ahead, and on both sides were still those strange picture frames.
"This haunted house...is more mysterious than I imagined," he said in a low voice.
The sound echoed in the empty corridor, carrying a strange buzzing sound.
Lin Yuwei did not answer.
Su Mu glanced at her sideways... She was staring intently at a painting on the left, holding a shield high, almost obscuring half her face.
"What's wrong?"
"That painting..." Lin Yuwei's voice was a little tense, "I just saw its eyes... move."
Su Mu shone the flashlight over.
A screaming man's face with two black holes in his eyes.
There was no movement.
"It's a lighting issue," Su Mu said. "These kinds of haunted houses like to use these little tricks, creating illusions with light and shadow."
Lin Yuwei took a deep breath and nodded.
The two continued walking forward.
After walking another ten meters or so, a turn finally appeared ahead.
Su Mu slowed his pace, leaned against the wall, and shone his flashlight out...
A narrower corridor.
Instead of picture frames, there were rows of tightly closed doors on both sides. Yellowed paper strips were pasted on the doors, with some blurry writing on them, and words such as "morgue," "dissection room," and "specimen room" could be vaguely made out.
At the end of the corridor, a larger space can be vaguely seen.
"This haunted house... is quite professionally made," Su Mu said.
Lin Yuwei followed, glanced at the doorplates, and her lips twitched: "You've been to a haunted house before?"
"I've been there once," Su Mu said casually as he walked forward. "I went to the haunted house at Happy Valley with my roommate when I was in college. It was set up like this, with corridors, rooms, and props that suddenly jump out. It was a bit scary at first, but I got used to it and found it boring."
He paused, then shone his flashlight across the word "morgue" on a door: "But in there, they're all real people acting out scenes, chasing after you. Here... there shouldn't be any real people anymore."
Hearing this, Lin Yuwei breathed a sigh of relief: "That's good. At least we don't have to worry about someone jumping out and scaring us halfway through."
"There's no need to worry about the people," Su Mu said.
He stopped and turned to look at Lin Yuwei. The beam of the flashlight shone up from below, casting a somewhat sinister light on his face. "But do you think this place might...?"
Lin Yuwei's pupils contracted slightly.
"Don't...don't talk nonsense." Her voice was visibly trembling.
"Nonsense?" Su Mu raised an eyebrow. "This isn't our original world. We have zombies, goblins, and monstrous bats. Isn't it normal for ghosts or something to appear?"
Lin Yuwei tightened her grip on the shield.
Su Mu continued, "Think about it, what if that level-two mutated creature isn't a zombie, but a real ghost...? Would that grenade you have be effective against it? Would the guns I have be effective against it?"
Lin Yuwei fell silent.
A few seconds later, she gritted her teeth and said, "You've said both the good and the bad. What do you want?"
Su Mu shrugged: "It's nothing, just a reminder. But since it's only level two, don't worry too much. No matter how strong it is, it's not that bad; we can handle it."
Lin Yuwei: "..."
She was about to say something when suddenly...
"Splash!"
Something fell straight down from the ceiling and landed right in front of the two of them!
It was a skeleton.
A deathly pale skeleton, empty eye sockets, and a few pieces of rotting cloth still clinging to its body. It hung there in front of the two of them, less than half a meter from Lin Yuwei's face, swaying slightly with a thin, transparent thread.
Lin Yuwei's pupils dilated instantly.
She bit her lip hard, forcing back the scream that was already rising in her throat. But her whole body was trembling, and she almost dropped the shield.
Su Mu glanced at her.
This woman is quite tolerant.
He was about to say something when he caught a glimpse of something in the darkness ahead...
A huge outline.
When the beam of the flashlight shone over, a figure could be vaguely seen, at least two meters tall, with a huge body, standing there quietly and motionless.
Su Mu's pupils contracted slightly.
He gripped his pistol tightly, fixing the flashlight beam firmly in that direction...
That was... a monster?
No, it was more like a humanoid figure pieced together from various fragments. Its enormous body was at least twice the width of a normal person. Its skin was an unnatural grayish-white, densely stitched with thick black threads, as if sewn together from countless fragments of a corpse.
Its head was wrapped in layers of burlap, completely obscuring its face. The burlap was stained with dark red stains, like dried blood. Only where its eyes were visible were two dimples, and something seemed to be faintly glowing inside.
To its left lay a huge axe.
The axe was almost as tall as the axe, with a wide blade that gleamed with a cold, sharp light. The handle was a heavy iron chain, one end attached to the axe head, the other end... attached to the wall.
chain.
Su Mu saw the chain... a wrist-thick iron chain extending from the monster's waist and secured to a metal ring on the wall. The chain was taut, clearly stretched taut.
And the instant he saw it all clearly...
The figure moved.
It suddenly raised its head, its head wrapped in burlap, and turned towards the direction where Su Mu was.
fast.
too fast.
Despite its enormous size, it moved with astonishing speed. In the blink of an eye, it had charged forward at least three meters! The chains rattled as they were pulled, and the metal rings on the wall creaked under the strain.
Su Mu did not hesitate at all.
He pulled the trigger.
boom!boom!
Two gunshots rang out in the narrow corridor, deafeningly loud. But under the influence of the soundproof barrier, the sound only echoed throughout the haunted house, without escaping a sound barrier.
The bullet struck the monster precisely in the head.
But the figure only paused slightly before continuing to charge forward!
Two meters again!
The chains were tightened even more.
Su Mu remained expressionless, his fingers clicking rapidly.
Bang! Bang! Bang! Bang! ...
Then twelve gunshots rang out almost in quick succession.
His arm rose slightly with the recoil, but his gaze remained fixed on the charging figure. Every bullet hit the same spot precisely... the head wrapped in layers of burlap.
The monster's movements finally stopped.
Its massive body swayed, its forward momentum abruptly halted. Then, like a small mountain, it crashed to the ground.
boom!
The ground was shaking.
The chains rattled back and fell to the ground with a dull metallic clang.
