Chapter 209 Team Objectives
His gaze moved, his pen moved, and the map was updated.
"Hyena packs, more numerous, scattered throughout the park, but not a significant threat. Leopards, at least three: two in the woods in the north and one near the rocky mountains in the south. Wild dog packs, number unknown, too fast to be accurately counted."
He Lin frowned slightly, but quickly relaxed. She noticed that Qian Sheng only mentioned the "common" wild animals... lions, hyenas, leopards, wild dogs. But the truly dangerous creatures in the zoo were far more numerous than those.
Qian Sheng seemed to sense her thoughts, paused for a moment with his pen, and then continued drawing.
"Other carnivores...cannot be accurately sensed." His voice lowered. "There's interference. It's not a technical problem; something in this zoo is blocking my senses. It's at a very high level, at least level eight or higher, maybe even higher."
There was a moment of silence on the rooftop.
Zhang Peng's expression didn't change, but he rubbed his hand along the seam of his pants, as if wiping away sweat.
"So," He Lin began, her voice cold, "our detection range isn't the limit of your capabilities, but rather the limit of your capabilities being suppressed by what's here?"
Qian Sheng didn't turn around, but his pen paused for a moment.
"Yes," he said. "Don't leave my range of twenty meters. Beyond that distance, your detectors won't receive my synchronized signal. Then you'll have to rely on yourselves."
Zhao Qiang muttered something again, but this time even Zhao Gang couldn't hear what he said.
He Lin mentally processed those words. Twenty meters... not far, not near. Within this distance, they possessed near-perfect battlefield information perception; beyond that distance, they were nothing. This limitation downgraded Qian Sheng's ability from a "divine weapon" to "support," but even so, it was terrifying enough. A twenty-meter range was enough to cover the entire battle formation for a team of twenty-five. In this apocalyptic world where information was life, Qian Sheng's value was greater than ten guns.
If his capabilities were greater, if he could grow stronger...
He Lin didn't continue thinking about it. She glanced at Zhang Peng, then at Qian Sheng's retreating figure. Why would someone like that be used by Zhang Peng? With Qian Sheng's abilities, he could get much better treatment in any large organization than under Zhang Peng.
The Wind, the Salvation Guild, and even those forces whose names she had only heard of would all vie for him. Yet he remained stuck on Zhang Peng's relatively small cable, serving as a "technical advisor" for the guild.
He Lin didn't ask. Some questions, even if asked, won't get you the truth.
Zhang Peng walked to the edge of the rooftop and stood next to Qian Sheng. He took the binoculars from Qian Sheng, looked at them for a while, and then spoke. His voice wasn't loud, but everyone could hear him clearly.
"This time, the target is a young carnivore."
He paused, as if organizing his thoughts.
"We previously found a cheetah cub outside the zoo. It wasn't very high-level, probably around level three. But its agility and growth potential were excellent. We chased it for three blocks, but it still managed to escape into the zoo. This time, our priority is to find that cheetah cub... Its activity area is in the western grassland area, near the herbivores, which is relatively safe."
He turned around and looked at everyone.
"But don't just focus on cheetahs. If any other high-level cubs appear on the detector, notify me immediately. Whether it's a lion, leopard, hyena, or anything you can't recognize... as long as it's high-level and has great growth potential, it's a target."
Zhao Qiang raised his hand: "Brother Peng, what do we need these cubs for?"
Zhang Peng glanced at him but did not answer.
Zhao Gang pressed Zhao Qiang's raised hand down.
No one on the rooftop asked the question anymore, but everyone had their own guesses. Some had heard that Zhang Peng had recently switched to a profession related to "beast taming," which allowed him to control creatures below a certain level.
If this is true, then these cubs are not "animals" to him, but "combat power." A level three cheetah cub, once grown up, will have at least level six or seven combat power, and will be absolutely loyal, never betraying or running away. In the apocalypse, this kind of power is more valuable than anything else.
"Let's go," Zhang Peng said.
Twenty-five people came down from the rooftop, descended the building's fire escape to the ground, crossed the street that was mostly blocked by rubble and garbage, and squeezed through a gap in the wall at the side entrance of the zoo.
Qian Sheng walked slightly ahead of the middle of the group, his 20-meter radius covering both the very front and the very back of the group. He Lin's group led the way, with her sensory ability user at the very front... a young man wearing a hood, named A Qing, whose talent was "Aura Concealment," allowing the group to remain undetected by monsters with olfactory and thermal senses within a certain range. His ability wasn't to eliminate smells and body temperature, but rather to "deceive"... making the monsters believe that the group's scent and body temperature were no different from the surrounding plants and soil.
He Lin walked slightly to the left of the middle of the group, her senses constantly scanning every corner around her. She could "see" the location of all creatures within a 300-meter radius, not with Qian Sheng's three-dimensional map, but with a more primitive, more intuitive perception... She knew there was something there, knew its size, direction of movement, and threat level, but didn't know what it looked like.
The two teams' teamwork was flawless in the first five minutes after entering the zoo.
Until they encountered the first monster they couldn't avoid.
A level seven spotted leopard swooped down from the treetop.
It was a size larger than a normal leopard, and its fur was not golden but dark gray, covered with black spots, as if something was rotting on it.
Its eyes were a ghastly white with no pupils. When its mouth was open, you could see that its teeth were jagged, some were broken, and some were too long, protruding from the corners of its mouth.
It pounced on a member of the team who was in the middle of the back... A young girl in Zhao Qiang's team was a beat slow to react and was hit on the shoulder by the leopard's claws. She was sent flying and crashed into a tree. She slid down, and her clothes on her shoulder were torn open, with blood gushing out from three deep claw marks.
"Don't waste bullets!" Zhang Peng's voice was low but urgent. "We have a limited number of silencing talismans; we can't use them here!"
The team remained calm.
Zhao Gang raised his shield to meet the attack.
