Cthulhu Panel: One organ mutates every day

Chapter 85 The Retreating Rats

One squad automatic weapon, one shotgun, one heavy machine gun, and their ammunition were all counted and distributed.

The three of them were carrying a full load of things.

Wayne had a large ammunition box hanging from his chest, Ethan had three quick-draw drum magazines hanging in front of him, and his waist magazine pouch was full of shotgun shells. Lillian had a spare ammunition belt slung diagonally across her waist.

Wayne picked up the crowbar and revolver, and remarked:

"Okay, that's the limit. I can't go any further."

Lillian patted the ammunition belt beside her, her eyes filled with satisfaction:

"Fortunately, I brought most of my equipment."

Ethan loaded the shotgun and inspected it:

"Let's go, we can set off now, let's see if we can solve it this time."

Wayne touched the "Heart Nail" on his body; this C-rank sealed artifact was also dragged into the nightmare.

According to Lei Luo, the remaining contamination of the "Heart Nail" can only sustain one more use.

Using the Heart Nail in a nightmare should not consume any Heart Nails in the real world.

The question now is, to what extent can using "heart weaving" to disrupt the consciousness threads of rats be effective?

Do mice have consciousness like a ball of yarn?

All living things should have this; we'll see how things go later.

And so, the three of them walked out of the banquet hall's lounge area and stepped into the crimson mist.

The surrounding scenery suddenly changed.

A tree-lined path appeared, and the South Cemetery came into view.

Following the clues from the tattered pages, Wayne led Ethan and Lillian straight toward Benjamin's grave along the dirt road.

During this time, Wayne secretly used his thoracic sac to dispel the scarlet mist.

Ethan observed this as he had last time, but said nothing.

Soon, the three arrived at Benjamin's grave.

There was an open grave pit containing an open coffin, which was empty.

There is a small mound of earth dug out on the outside of the pit.

The bottom of the coffin had a dark hole leading underground.

The sense of the fragment lies in that pit that has never been descended into, deep within the cave.

A creaking sound came from deep within the cave.

The sounds were more frequent and more unsettling than the previous three times.

Wayne placed the squad automatic weapon next to Lillian, put down the ammunition, and stepped back to the side.

"I'll take care of the little rats who escaped the net; the big rats are your heavy firepower."

Ethan cocked the gun and nodded.

"Alright, let's all step back a little to make it easier for heavy firepower to suppress us."

Lillian was holding a heavy machine gun, with a squad automatic weapon at her feet; they had plenty of ammunition, and her eyes were filled with excitement.

"No problem, I'm all ready."

Ethan and Lillian were directly in front of the cave, with ammunition at hand, and had already aimed their guns at the entrance of the tomb.

"Lillian, I'll suppress the front with my shotgun, you use the heavy machine gun to sweep the flanks. We'll concentrate our firepower and eliminate most of them. Leave the rest to Wayne on the flanks."

Lillian had already loaded the ammunition belts and set up the heavy machine gun:

"clear!"

Wayne stood far away, ready to use the crowbar to lift [the object], while reminding him:

"It's coming!"

Instantly, a series of sharp, creaking sounds rang out, followed by a burst of congestion.

From the hole beneath the coffin, swarms of enormous gray rats emerged, their eyes bloodshot, their cries whimpering.

"Fire! They'll have a hard time combining under firepower," Ethan said coldly.

A dense barrage of gunfire erupted, deafeningly loud.

The coffin was instantly blasted into pieces.

Ethan's fully automatic shotgun roared, and shot after shot struck the front row of the rat swarm, causing the rats' bodies to explode on the spot, with blood and gray fur splattering everywhere.

The front swarm of rats was blasted open, creating a breach.

Lillian controlled the heavy machine gun, its barrel vibrating as large armor-piercing rounds continuously spewed out, piercing through the rats.

The rats on both sides were shot and shattered one after another, their remains wriggling on the ground.

Shell casings kept flying and rolling down, piling up in a small heap of brass at Lillian's feet.

Wayne stood to the side of Lillian and Ethan, wielding a crowbar and frequently straining his arm and waist muscles to their limits, smashing any rats he missed on the spot.

Muscle groups throughout the body, especially the arm and waist muscles, are frequently pushed to their limits.

Wein used breathing to increase the body's oxygen supply, maintain excitement and focus, and try to prevent muscle soreness.

In the nightmare, the progress bar shows ten times the normal speed.

[Sports Lv.1 - Extreme Body] Progress 12.0%, 14.2%, 15.4%, 16.8%...

[Breathing Lv.1 - Empty Breath] Progress 70.6%, 70.8%, 80.0%, 80.2%...

……

With the firepower constantly suppressing the enemy, Wayne was eliminating any stray rats on the side.

The corpses of rats piled up, their dark red blood staining the earth.

The rat swarm was never able to gain the upper hand and was instead trapped and slaughtered near the cave entrance.

Ammunition is consumed very quickly.

The situation seemed to be going very smoothly.

How many rats can be in a grave?

If this continues, the rat population will eventually be eradicated.

However, as time went on, the rats seemed to realize something.

Gradually, they stopped pouring out of the cave in large numbers and instead stayed near the cave entrance, crowding and churning among themselves.

Their position is very clever; they are stuck at the cave entrance.

Ethan and Lillian's firepower couldn't reach the location of the rat swarm.

Wei En tiptoed a few steps closer and peered into the cave.

The rats were already huddled together, their eyes bloodshot, biting each other, sticking together, forming a mass, radiating red light.

Wayne reminded him:

"This is bad; they're about to merge at the cave entrance."

Ethan frowned:

"Combined? Does that mean that combining will allow them to break through our suppressive fire?"

Wayne fell into deep thought:

"That's possible. Although we don't know what the rats are planning to do, it's best to prevent them from merging just to be on the safe side."

Ethan picked up his shotgun, stepped forward, approached the cave entrance, found the right angle, and fired several shots at the gathering swarm of rats.

Because the rat swarm was clustered together, it was blasted apart and destroyed after being hit by several shots of shotgun shells, leaving a cloud of blood in the air.

The rats were either dead or wounded, and they were scattered at the entrance of the hole, wriggling, struggling, and hissing.

The cave entrance was subtly blocked.

Moments later, the blood mist dissipated.

"Strange... no rats are coming out now." Ethan maintained his gun-holding posture.

Lillian followed from her distant firing position: "Are you done eliminating them?"

Wayne focused his attention on his senses and observed that the cave was vibrating slightly, and that there were faint, more frequent creaking sounds coming from within. He then said:

"They're far from being completely wiped out; there seems to be more than half left in the cave."

"That's a bit tricky. Do they sense some kind of crisis and plan to breed down there for a while longer?" Ethan smiled.

"Can we go down into the cave?" Lillian asked.

Wayne shook his head:

"It's a bit difficult. This cave is only big enough for one person to pass through. Putting aside whether we can pass through with weapons and ammunition, just the fact that we encounter rats blocking our way as we enter the cave is a very difficult thing to do."
