Farming Life Starting in Africa
Chapter 77 Infiltration
"Holy crap!" Leng Feng's eyes widened. "How much medicine did you put in there?"
"Three pounds of TNT," Rosen said. "That'll be powerful enough to blow up a huge area. So be sure to keep a safe distance when using it."
Leng Feng was speechless. What kind of insane modification was this? The Claymore mine was already ruthless enough, and you added three pounds of more? Anyone who got close would be blown to pieces.
Zhou Weijie was used to it. He knew this from using Rosen's homemade bombs; the guy always offered more for the same price. Using something without asking first could easily get you killed too.
"Alright, let's leave it at that for now. Let's rest and start the operation at 3 a.m.
In the summer here, it usually doesn't get light until around six o'clock, giving them three hours to operate, which is enough time to rescue people.
The sky had completely darkened, and stars began to appear one by one, like someone had scattered a handful of diamonds across the heavens.
When the group drove back to another area near the mine, most of the people in the mine were already in a deep sleep.
Rosen looked at the footage from the drone; the sentry was already dozing off. "That's about it. Check your watches. It's 3:10 now. You're on time at 3:30."
The group took out their watches, checked the time, and nodded to each other.
Rosen put on the Space Marine-style helmet, pulled down his night vision goggles, and the world before him turned green.
"Let's go, safety first."
Night had fallen, and the desert wind howled, pebbles whistling against the helmets. Several dark figures moved swiftly in the moonlight, making no sound.
Zhou Weijie and Leng Feng stealthily made their way forward along the route they had scouted during the day, both of them covered in ammunition.
Before they set off, Rosen gave each of them a crossbow. Zhou Weijie's assassination skills were also quite good; to have survived for so many years in such a chaotic place, he must have some special skills.
Once the fight begins, Patrick and Miao Feng will drive their vehicles as close as possible to provide support.
Rosen returned alone to the valley he had discovered during the day.
The moonlight shone on the hillside, making the stones appear eerily white. He turned on the thermal imaging function on his helmet, and the world before him instantly turned into an eerie green.
From a distance, he spotted the back door. In the thermal imaging, two green, humanoid figures leaned against the cave wall. Rosen stared at them for two minutes, but they didn't move an inch.
"This sentry job is really something," Rosen thought to himself, "he's really made my life easier."
Rosen changed into a pair of soft-soled shoes and put all his weapons into his capsule space. He also stored all the small pebbles he encountered along the way in the capsule space to prevent them from falling and making noise when he stepped on them.
When he reached the vicinity of the cave entrance, he finally heard two snoring sounds coming from his earpiece.
Rosen was delighted and was about to step inside.
Just then, moonlight peeked out from behind the clouds and shone on the cave entrance. Out of the corner of his eye, he caught a glimpse of a thin, silvery-white line, hanging about ten centimeters above the ground, lying across the middle of the cave entrance.
Rosen stopped. He crouched down and looked closer, discovering it was a steel wire. Following the wire to both sides, he saw it was tied to a nail on the rock face on the left, and connected to a thin rope on the right, with two aluminum cans hanging from the rope.
Good heavens, a homemade burglar alarm.
"These guys may snore like pros," Rosen thought, "but they're not bad at safety."
He gently lifted his leg and carefully stepped over the steel wire. Once inside the cave, Rosen stopped, his eyes slowly adjusting to the darkness. The two sentries were indeed still in the same positions, leaning against the wall, heads tilted, mouths agape.
Rosen pulled out two pre-loaded, bolt-loaded crossbows from his capsule. He held one in each hand and slowly moved forward. When he was less than a meter away from the two men, he aimed the bolts at their eyes and pulled the triggers.
"Whoosh—" "Whoosh—"
Two carbon arrows streaked through the air with barely audible screechs, precisely piercing the brains of the two sentries. Their bodies stiffened abruptly, then went limp.
He added string dampers, pulley dampers, and crossbow body dampers to the composite crossbows to reduce friction. They still use carbon arrows, but even so, each one still makes a noise of fifty or sixty decibels.
If you use a pistol with a silencer and subsonic bullets, it's not much different from setting off small firecrackers; both produce at least 120 decibels of noise.
The volume after adding a silencer in the movie was something Rosen had never seen before. It was quieter than the sound of a crossbow bolt, which was ridiculous.
Rosen stood still and drew back the bowstring. Deep in the mine, all was silent except for the pounding of his own heart in his chest.
He let out a long breath, put the crossbow back into his capsule, picked up his rifle, and continued deeper into the cave.
The air in the mine was damp and stuffy, with a musty and rusty smell, as well as some kind of indescribable foul odor.
Rosen walked for about a hundred meters when suddenly the road ended, leaving only a downward-pointing pit.
He crouched down at the edge of the pit and looked down. Through the low-light night vision goggles, he could see a pit about ten meters deep, with darkness below.
A row of dilapidated wooden ladders hangs on one side of the pit's rock wall.
A light bulb hung on the wall next to the ladder, but it was not lit.
He turned around and looked at the rock wall behind him, and found a rock stuck in the cave wall. Most of the rest was probably embedded in the rock wall and looked quite solid.
Rosen took out a roll of thick nylon rope from the capsule space, wrapped it around the side of the stone a few times, tied two reinforcing knots, and then lowered the rope into the hole.
He didn't choose to climb the ladder; it was too old and would inevitably make noise when stepped on.
He tugged at the rope to make sure it was secure, then grabbed it with both hands, clamped his legs between the rope, and slowly slid down.
When he landed, he looked down and saw that there was a wooden plank under his feet. Stepping on it felt hollow and echoed.
There should be another layer below, but the dust on the wooden planks is very thick, so there should be a deeper abandoned mine tunnel underneath.
Rosen stood up and looked around. This place was much wider than the alleyway above, like a transfer station or a storage point for supplies. In the corner, there was a pile of empty wooden crates and garbage.
He carried his gun and walked quietly through the mine tunnel.
Apart from his own slightly heavy breathing, there was no other sound.
After walking about 300 meters, lights appeared ahead.
Rosen clung to the rock wall, inching forward step by step. After turning a corner, he came to a storage room with its door open.
A kerosene lamp hung on the door frame, and Rosen hid behind the corner, only peeking in with half his head sticking out.
