Chapter 64 Yellowcake Crisis
As the old man drove his jeep, he saw two tanks that had stopped and a burning fire in the distance. His heart sank, and he had a bad feeling.
Suddenly, his left eye started twitching uncontrollably, his eyelid twitching like a spasm, and the feeling of danger in his heart grew stronger. He looked around, but found no danger.
Could it be that it's been locked onto by the enemy tank?
Thinking this, he floored the accelerator and simultaneously swerved the steering wheel sharply to the right, causing the car to jerk violently. In that instant, out of the corner of his eye, he caught a glimpse of a small dot rapidly growing larger high in the sky.
The old man felt a chill run down his spine. He instinctively opened the left-hand car door and jumped out without hesitation, rolling several times on the ground.
Less than a second after he landed, a loud explosion occurred behind him. The jeep he had been sitting in was blown up and rolled over, bursting into flames, with debris flying far away.
In Rosen's VR view, just before the drone hit, he seemed to see something fall out of the cockpit. He paused for a moment, but didn't pay much attention.
"Take one down," Rosen said. "You hide for a bit, don't let the tanks on the other side spot you."
As he spoke, he pulled out another drone from his bag and loaded it with bombs. His drone was indeed incredibly powerful; it sped up like a rocket, reaching speeds of 250 kilometers per hour. Once a ground unit was locked onto it, it was basically doomed.
Using this method, Rosen dealt with the jeep behind him. With a loud bang, another fireball erupted.
The people in the remaining two cars, even if they weren't the brightest, realized what was happening. This was a drone attack! They didn't even know where the enemy was; going any further would just mean certain death.
They decisively turned around and ran back in different directions, not caring about the fact that Big Dad's car had been blown up. Anyway, they had seen Big Dad jump out of the car, and whether he broke his leg or not was up to fate.
The four tanks at the rear seemed to have received a message from ahead and hurriedly turned around to try to escape.
Faced with the ultra-fast speed of drones, bulky tanks are nothing more than sitting ducks, and it's only a matter of time before they are blown up one by one.
Watching the rising black smoke gradually recede into the distance, Leng Feng was filled with surprise and muttered, "They're just running away? They're not going to fight? I thought we were going to have a tough battle."
Rosen took off his tank helmet; it was so stuffy and sweaty. "What else can we do? If we dawdle any longer, they'll all be stuck here."
Leng Feng took out a racing drone from his bag, a device only the size of a router. After fiddling with it for a while, he clicked his tongue in admiration and said, "Wow, the performance of your drone is a bit too exaggerated! I never thought this little gadget could be used like this."
Leng Feng was completely unaware that his hasty exchange of blows had caused him to miss a golden opportunity to track down his enemy.
"So, where do we go next?"
Rosen turned the air conditioning inside the tank up to the maximum. "Back to the junkyard, I'm waiting for my friends to come over and meet up."
Watching the dust settle further into the distance, Leng Feng's face showed worry. "What if the rebels come back and attack again?"
"What are you afraid of? When we get back, we'll lay more landmines. I'll install the detonator here and see who dares to come back."
Leng Feng drove the tank back to the junkyard; it was already getting dark. Rosen took out nearly 100 landmines, and the three of them took advantage of the darkness to expand the mine-laying area to 300 meters. However, the outer ring of landmines were no longer pressure-activated or trigger-activated; he had converted them all to remote-controlled detonators.
Furthermore, surveillance alarms have been installed outside the fence, which will sound an alarm if any vehicle or person approaches.
Just as Rosen and Leng Feng were diligently laying landmines and laying power lines to prepare for the next few days of defense...
Meanwhile, the Republic of Ivia to the north was also in turmoil. The atmosphere in the Ivia capital grew increasingly tense, with fewer and fewer people on the streets and long queues forming outside supermarkets. Large numbers of military vehicles rumbled southwards towards the Uller region, green trucks arriving one after another, their cargo beds filled with soldiers.
Within the crowd, a woman wearing a headscarf watched the convoy drive away before pulling an old Nokia phone from her clothes and dialing a number. She said in a low voice, "General Sharaf, their main force has left the capital; they can prepare to move out."
After saying that, the woman hung up the phone, looked around, stuffed her phone back into her clothes, and disappeared into the alley with her head down.
In the office of the French newspaper headquarters near Dar el-Beida Square in Morocco, Xia Nan was catching up on sleep at her desk. She hadn't had a proper night's sleep for weeks because she was investigating a case involving the smuggling of nuclear materials.
Just then, a young Arab man strode in, his leather shoes clicking on the floor. His name was Abu, and he was Xia Nan's assistant as a reporter. Abu walked to the table, gently patted Xia Nan's shoulder, and said, "Hey, boss, wake up, we have news."
Xia Nan groggily raised her head, rubbed her eyes, and said, "Abu, any new clues? You'd better have good news, I just dreamt I was eating hot pot."
Abu smiled, pulled a stack of photos from the file folder in his hand, and slammed them onto Xia Nan's desk. The photos showed a white-haired, bearded Arab man in a suit.
"I've found him. The target is him—William Boson. He's the head of development at Green Valley Energy Company in the Republic of Ivia, in charge of uranium mining and the purchase of yellowcake from overseas."
Xia Nan immediately perked up, her eyes lighting up. "No wonder! We couldn't figure out where those yellowcakes came from. Turns out they were using his purchasing as a front, ostensibly buying ore, but secretly intercepting the shipment." As she spoke, she flipped through photos, including one of William Berson attending a press conference. "Didn't the period when he was investigated a couple of years ago coincide with the time when those anonymous yellowcakes went missing?"
Abu's eyebrows practically shot up with excitement. "Exactly! My informant said William still has a sizable batch of yellowcake, and he just got the technology to make dirty bombs! Dirty bombs!"
Xia Nan's eyes widened, her mouth agape for a long time. "Ivia is getting more and more chaotic because of Uller's mess, and the situation is getting more and more tense every day. If he still has that batch of yellowcake, he will definitely take advantage of the chaos to transport it away. We must keep track of this line and not let him get away."
Abu seemed to remember something else and quickly squatted down, flipping through the documents in his hand. "Oh, right, there's another thing about William. There was a girl who was sexually abused, and all the evidence pointed to him, but for various reasons, the case wasn't prosecuted. My informant has been in contact with that girl, and she mentioned a detail—William never takes off the necklace around his neck, even when he sleeps or showers. He said that it contains a secret that could throw the world into chaos."
