Chapter 241 Brian, who brought disaster to Mia's family
The following morning, the FBI was at its headquarters in McAllen.
Brian sat in his east-facing office on the second floor, where the morning sunlight was cut into parallel lines of light by the blinds.
He didn't immediately let go of the phone after placing it on the table; his fingertips were still pressing against the edge of the phone.
The sound of that phone call was still ringing in his ears. When Mia's voice burst out from the receiver, he instinctively moved the phone a few inches away, but he could still hear what she was cursing.
Mia called him a liar, accused him of using Letty, and criticized him for promising to "help Don get a pardon" only to push him into a fire. Brian couldn't refute any of this.
When he put his phone back on the table, he slammed his fist on the table, hoping that the pain would lessen his guilt.
Brian leaned back in his chair, the springs creaking softly. He rubbed his throbbing temples, closed his eyes, and let the images of the past few months replay in his mind.
Brian was recruited by the FBI last year to become a federal agent.
In recent years, Braga, a drug lord on the US-Mexico border, has been recruiting street drivers to smuggle drugs for him. The FBI has been investigating for years without any progress, and the undercover agents they sent have been killed one after another.
The information received by the FBI indicated that only Brian, who was knowledgeable about the underground racing modification scene and familiar with border smuggling methods, was an excellent candidate to infiltrate the Braga Cartel.
Brian himself was willing to return to the official team because of Mia.
Mia's brother, Don, was forced to leave his hometown because of him and has been wanted by the police ever since.
If Tang cannot return home, he will not be able to gain Mia's forgiveness, and the two will have no chance to get back together.
Therefore, he reached an agreement with the FBI when he joined the company.
If Braga is successfully captured, Dominic will be granted a full pardon, freeing Dom from the life of a fugitive.
A few days ago, he contacted Letty and said he could help Don find a chance for a pardon, so Letty joined without hesitation and went to participate in the recruitment of street racers.
When he received another message from Letty, something had happened to her; Letty might have died or gone missing.
This drove Brian crazy. He had made his girlfriend's brother a wanted criminal and, incidentally, caused the death of his girlfriend's brother's wife and childhood friend.
However, he brought this whole thing on himself.
If he hadn't agreed to the FBI's request, if he hadn't tried to get Mia to forgive him by "helping Dominic get a pardon," Letty might still be in some hidden garage tuning her engine, instead of being like this, with no one even knowing whether she's alive or dead.
Brian opened his eyes, his gaze falling on the half-empty cup of cold coffee, wondering how he could continue to help Don obtain a pardon.
Unfortunately, his mind was in complete chaos, and he had no ideas whatsoever.
The office door opened, and a woman in a dark blue suit jacket walked in. She had a lean and capable figure, and her hair was tied back in a low ponytail.
She carried a folder, walked to Brian's desk, sat down opposite him, placed the folder on the table, and turned the open page towards him.
"Brian," she began, "my informant has found a lead on recruitment of street racers in Braga."
Brian looked up, and upon hearing the news about Braga, he immediately perked up. "What clue?"
“A small-time crook named Lorton,” the woman pointed to the name and photo on a sheet of paper in the folder, “he knows who’s recruiting drivers for Braga. This guy hangs out in the suburbs east of Macallan, occasionally doing errands and deliveries. He’s connected to that underground racing scene. My informant said Braga’s looking for new street drivers, and there’s a selection race coming up soon. Lorton knows who’s organizing it.”
Brian stared intently at the photo in the folder; it showed a young, bald Latino man with tattoos on both arms.
"So, I need to find this guy named Lorton first, then through him I can find the convener, and then through the convener I can find Braga?"
Brian felt like he was playing a video game. You had to defeat one enemy to see the next, and only after defeating the next could you see the final boss. The problem was, the more enemies he fought, the higher the chance that Braga would hide.
The woman closed the folder and looked at Brian. "Lapam doesn't have much patience left with you. If you can't catch Braga soon, your agreement with him will be void."
Brian held out his hand, palm outstretched, gesturing for the woman to give him Lorton's file.
The woman obediently handed the file to Brian, then stood up and prepared to leave.
Brian opened the folder, glanced at the address, then tore off the page, folded it, and stuffed it into his shirt pocket.
Following the woman's steps, he walked out, and when they reached the door, he suddenly asked, "Where's that female racer who was arrested last time?"
"She was released on bail; her boss paid for it, and she was released once the paperwork was completed."
Brian's lips twitched slightly, but he didn't say anything more, opened the door, and went out.
A few nights ago, he received information that Braga's top henchman would be dealing drugs in a community west of McCarran.
So he set up surveillance in that community, and just as he was about to close in, an unexpected incident occurred.
A group of street racers broke through the police cordon, allowing the guy who knew the most accurate information about Braga to escape.
This led him to only catch the race car driver who rammed the police car, but unexpectedly, the race car driver turned out to be a woman, and a mute one at that.
Brian also wanted to send the woman to prison to repent for her sins, but he didn't expect that the woman had a wealthy boss behind her.
Rosen left early in the morning. His Mercedes-Benz G-Class was glistening with a thin layer of dew in the morning light. He had fine-tuned the car many times, and its performance was becoming increasingly stable.
The shortest route to Weslaco goes through the entire city of McAllen. The morning rush hour wasn't completely over yet, so there were still quite a few cars on the road, and at some intersections you had to wait through two red lights to cross.
Rosen had one hand on the steering wheel and the other on the window sill, his fingers gently tapping on the car door in sync with the rhythm of "Old Man" on the radio.
However, his mind wasn't on the song; his fingers were unconsciously following the rhythm.
What happened to Gisele? We kissed so naturally that night, she saved my phone number and left me money, and then she just vanished.
He recalled Swage's phone call. When would that unfortunate guy get charged with assassinating the president and make the news so everyone would know about him?
As he was lost in thought, a figure suddenly rushed into his field of vision from the right.
