Farming Life Starting in Africa

Chapter 240 Unlucky Gunnar

As he spoke, he patted the mud off his trousers and then bent down to pull the bow of the boat a little further ashore.

The black man next to him also got off the boat, then looked up and scanned the open terrain around him, his gaze lingering for a few seconds on the unfinished construction site and the empty fields in the distance.

"Barney, the docks and stuff don't matter. With such a big farm like yours, build a runway. Then planes can land directly on the runway, and it'll be easier to maintain them."

"Yes, yes, yes! Caesar is right!" Several people nearby nodded in agreement. "Building a runway will make takeoffs and landings smoother and safer."

Barney stood at the stern, his face darkening after hearing this series of suggestions. A makeshift dock was somewhat possible, but a runway?

The weight of an albatross greatly increases the requirements for the runway; a simple runway simply cannot handle the takeoff of such a large creature.

Leaving aside the cost of repairing an airstrip, which would drain his entire fortune, the annual maintenance fees alone would be enough to kill him.

As the last person left, the kayak suddenly rose higher, and the distance between the edge of the boat and the water surface increased dramatically.

Gunnar was still lying at the bottom of the boat, and no one reached out to help him. He stared at the sky above, his face expressionless; he probably didn't even have the strength to curse.

Rosen stood a few steps away, watching this scene, his eyes twitching.

The crocodiles in the lake are still there. Given Gunnar's blood-covered appearance, if he stays on this little kayak a little longer, he'll probably attract the crocodiles for a buffet.

The group found the construction progress of Rosen's house quite amusing. Most of them lived in wooden houses, and very few lived in sturdy brick-and-mortar houses; they had never experienced a completely concrete house like this before.

Barney exclaimed, "It hasn't been that long, and the first floor of the house is almost finished!"

Rosen walked over and gestured with his chin toward the kayak. "You didn't bring him back so he could feed the crocodiles, did you?"

Barney then remembered that Rosen had warned him about the crocodiles in the lake.

His expression changed, and he turned and ran towards the lake. The movement aggravated the wound on his side, causing his facial muscles to twitch again, but he didn't stop. "Christmas! Caesar! Come and give him a hand! He's too heavy!"

The group of men then reluctantly turned back to fetch Gunnar.

Christmas and Caesar each grabbed one of his arms, while Rhodes dragged Gunnar down by one of his legs. Barney, injured, didn't lend a hand.

Seeing Gunnar's disheveled appearance, the man standing by watching the spectacle gave a smirk, then turned to Rosen and asked in Chinese, "Where are you from?"

Rosen looked at the face; it was a face he had seen on a video arcade screen when he was a child.

This guy was my idol when I was a kid, it's a pity he's no longer Chinese. But in this movie world, he doesn't need to add too much emotion to it.

"I'm from Beijing. What about you?"

Yin Yang was silent for a moment, then said softly, "I used to be like that too."

These words seemed to remind him of some less pleasant memories, and then he turned and walked towards Barney and the others.

Gunnar was carried to the open space in front of the shed, where several people placed him on an old waterproof cloth.

Christmas then looked back at the now calm lake and asked curiously, "Barney, are there really crocodiles in this lake?"

Barney shook his head and said uncertainly, "I haven't seen it either, but my neighbor said he has."

Yin Yang joked from the side, "Why don't we leave Gongna here for the night? Let's see if he's still around tomorrow?"

The people around laughed, but Gunnar, lying on the tarpaulin, managed to roll his eyes in protest.

Barney sighed helplessly and said, "Even if he stayed here for one night, he'd probably be dead by now, unless he was dragged away by the crocodiles. His wound just reopened."

Upon hearing this, Christmas squatted down and looked at the wound on Gunnar's chest. The newly changed gauze was already soaked with blood, and the dark red liquid seeping from the edges had spread across the fabric in a large area, and was still slowly expanding.

He reached out and pressed the edge, Gunnar's brows furrowed sharply, he groaned, and his body tensed up before relaxing again.

Caesar shrugged. "I was fine when I was sewing, but he probably moved around too much on the ship and the thread broke."

"Your technique is terrible," Barney said, standing beside him, clutching his back. "After all these years as a veterinarian, how come your stitches aren't tight at all?"

Caesar chuckled and scratched the back of his head. "I used to sew up cows and sheep; their skin is thick and tough, so I could just sew it up with a thick needle. Human skin is thin, and this guy keeps moving around, so I was afraid that if I sewed it too tight, the skin would wrinkle up."

The mouths of the people next to him twitched. Caesar didn't use anesthesia back then. He used a needle thicker than a toothpick to sew the wound by hand. If Gunnar didn't move after that, then he would be too amazing.

Rosen looked at Gunnar's face, which was as white as paper. The area of blood seeping through the gauze on his chest was still slowly expanding, but the amount of blood flowing out had decreased.

He couldn't help but speak up, "Are you sure he has much longer to live? He looks like he's about to die. Look at the wound on his chest, there's hardly any blood coming out."

Upon hearing this, Barney stopped pretending to be chatting, put his hand on his side, and said in a low voice, "Can I borrow your car for a bit? I'll wash it and fill it up with gas for you."

Rosen glanced at the mud, sweat, dust, dried blood, and a few barely noticeable oil stains on the six men, then shook his head. He was letting them drive his car once; did he even need the car anymore?

He turned and shouted in the direction of the construction site, waving to a foreman who was carrying building materials.

After the foreman ran over, Rosen whispered a few words to him, and a beat-up pickup truck carrying materials was driven over shortly afterward.

The truck was dusty and dirty, with half a bag of cement and several bundles of wire piled up in the cargo bed. The sheet metal of the truck bed had several rust holes, which had been patched with rivets.

After the foreman emptied the contents of the back compartment, Rosen gestured with his chin towards Barney and the others. "You guys can use this. Do whatever you want with it, no need to wash it."

Barney glanced at the pickup truck, nodded, and said, "Thanks, I'll return it later."

Several people hurriedly lifted Gunnar into the back compartment, and Christmas tore a waterproof tarp over him, but with a bit more force, covered Gunnar's face as well.

Yin Yang took the keys from the foreman and got into the driver's seat.

When the pickup truck started, the engine coughed twice before it ignited, and a puff of blue smoke came out of the exhaust pipe. Then the truck drove off along the dirt road.

Rosen watched as the pickup truck drove into potholes almost everywhere. Damn it! Doesn't it care about its own car?

Poor Gunnar, he's offended such a petty person, how much suffering he'll have to endure!
