Farming Life Starting in Africa

Chapter 214 Marvin's Intuition

The drone followed the figure, circling the woodland to the north several times.

He then realized that the guy was wandering around aimlessly. What kind of weirdo was he, still wandering around in the woods even though it was dark?

Lawson only stopped tracking the drone when it indicated low battery and began automatically returning to home.

He didn't have the patience to watch this guy go crazy, otherwise he could have easily added another drone to keep an eye on him.

Rosen suspected that this person was the mysterious neighbor from the north, but he had been there for so long and had never seen his true face. He only knew that there was such a person living in the north, but he had never seen his face clearly.

He decided to install more surveillance cameras near his farm, so that no matter who the person wandering around tonight was, there were indeed people watching him in this area.

Installing surveillance cameras can also detect in advance any crazy people who break in. There's no shortage of idiots here in the US. All that talk about private territory being sacred and inviolable is just a lie.

If the law were truly as strict as it is, there wouldn't be so many messy incidents that happen after people break in.

Their castle laws only apply under extremely strict conditions, such as farms like his, which have "No Entry" signs posted around the perimeter, and the American Constitution does not protect privacy there.

Unfortunately, this isn't Africa. In Africa, people who don't believe warning signs would have been reincarnated long ago, so there's a reason why there are fewer people here in the US.

He had considered burying something in the ground; he was used to that method of dealing with problems in Africa—it was simple, direct, inexpensive, and surprisingly effective.

Here, he can also offer free amputation services to people who are overly excited, or use the unfortunate souls who cannot be saved in time to feed the crocodiles.

But if he really did plant landmines on his own borders, and one day a policeman accidentally stepped on one, or some lost big shot stumbled upon it, then the trouble would escalate directly from "suspected illegal intrusion" to "major news that can be investigated."

He had to figure out a way that wouldn't easily cause trouble, a way that could stop people without actually killing them, and at least not leave any trace that would be discovered.

When Rosen returned to his space capsule to rest, the unfortunate fellow who had been chased by his drone for nearly an hour finally returned to his small underground cabin, dragging his tired steps and tense nerves.

While munching on a high-calorie energy bar, Marvin muttered to himself, "How can that thing in the sky fly for so long? Aren't drones supposed to fly for at most ten or twenty minutes? What kind of battery does this thing have? Is it nuclear-powered? This is so inconvenient for an old person like me."

Marvin's keen senses allowed him to know, beyond the sight of ordinary people, that something was following him.

He placed the remaining half of the energy bar on the table, reached out and rubbed his calves, which were still trembling slightly due to the lack of muscle. He realized it had been many years since he had run for this long.

"Next time I need to find a different way to monitor this strange neighbor. I can't use this old trick anymore; today was too dangerous."

Marvin did have some regrets. Tonight he had only planned to take a walk around the edge of the farm, somewhere far away, not too close.

He wanted to check on the progress of the construction site and the activity of the silver metal module at night, but he was spotted by the drone.

The thing flew quieter and at a more stable altitude than any of the models he had ever seen; it didn't seem like a cheap one.

Marvin made himself a cup of instant coffee with hot water, sat down at the old wooden table, and looked down at the swirling dark liquid in the cup, remembering the two documents Frank had given him.

It says that Rosen was just lucky to receive a gift from someone, and that he was just a scrap collector in Africa.

Barney is the real dangerous guy. He fought in the Vietnam War, worked as a mercenary for many years, and completed missions that required him to survive. His background is also more complicated.

But what Marvin saw was different from what was written on the paper. Whether it was the drone, the futuristic house, or the rapidly progressing construction site, everything proved that this person was different, unlike any other Asian he had ever met.

At the same time, his intuition told him that this Rosen was more dangerous.

In all his years of life, among all the information he had ever seen or followed, he had never felt this seemingly harmless yet internally oppressive conflict simultaneously in any one person.

He felt that once that person actually discovered him, he would be like a chick trapped in a cage, with nowhere to escape. He picked up his cup and finished the rest of his coffee in one gulp, letting the warmth relax his tired mind and body.

Rosen had already turned off the lights in the capsule and was lying on the spacious bed, looking through the panoramic glass at the edge of the woodland covered in night. Occasionally, he could see the outlines of a few oak trees swaying slightly in the moonlight.

He was thinking about whether to make the drone's tracking program more sensitive. If it could be set to automatic tracking mode, so that he wouldn't have to manually control it every time, that would be perfect.

Unfortunately, Rosen doesn't understand this kind of program, and he really wants someone who knows this!

The next morning, Rosen was awakened by the noise from the construction site. He squinted and turned over, and through the French windows he saw that there were already more than a dozen people wearing fluorescent vests walking around on the construction site.

He regretted placing the capsule so close to the construction site. He stared at the ceiling for a while, wondering if he should have placed it further away.

But then I remembered that the septic tank pit next door had already been dug, so I was too lazy to bother with it. Anyway, I was only staying there for a while.

Rosen browsed DeepDream for a while. It's a super social platform similar to Facebook and Google, and it's currently the most popular social media app in the United States. Interestingly, the owner of DeepDream is a South Asian.

He discovered that the American internet is quite lively now, with the Ice Bucket Challenge taking place across the country.

Of course, there was also news that Lawson was interested in: because hackers had breached Apple's cloud, a large number of private photos of Hollywood actresses were posted and spread wildly on the 4chan forum.

This was a real treat for Rosen; the Americans really know how to do things differently. They had all sorts of mind-blowing things, and these Hollywood actresses were far more skilled than the actresses from the San Fernando Valley.

On the American internet, you can still see comments smearing China from time to time. All sorts of brainless and outrageous comments are so absurd as to be anti-intellectual. There is always a group of people responding enthusiastically. Among them, the most enthusiastic ones, when Rosen clicked to take a look, were mostly Asians.

This left Rosen speechless, wishing he could reach through the internet cable and open a window in these people's heads.

Rosen grew angrier the more he looked at it, so he simply got up to wash up. The water temperature from the constant-temperature showerhead was just right.
