Chapter 49 This madwoman... she's riding an ostrich?!
Li Yaoyao closed her shop early today.
Qi Yuge was temporarily assigned by his father to go on a business trip to Jiangnan. He left in a hurry and didn't have time to feed Yanyan.
Upon arriving at the manor, she walked slowly inside, and the servants she encountered along the way greeted her warmly.
She replied to each one with a smile, but her steps didn't stop.
Night had fallen, and the streetlights in the manor were spaced far apart, so she could only squint to see the path beneath her feet.
Night blindness is especially troublesome at times like this, so she turned on her phone's flashlight to shine on the ground and quickened her pace.
The phone rang.
Qi Yuge's phone call.
"Have we arrived yet?"
His voice was tired, with a hint of barely perceptible irritation.
"I'll be there soon, I'm just passing by..."
Li Yaoyao suddenly stopped in her tracks.
The streetlights by the fence ahead were dim, but enough for her to see the few swaying shadows.
Several beams of powerful flashlights moved quickly between the fences, their beams sweeping across the isolation netting of the cages before finally settling on a white van parked at a gap in the estate's fence.
"Wait, something's not right!"
She held the phone close to her ear, lowering her voice but unable to suppress her alertness.
"Qi Yuge, did you arrange for anyone to exercise today?"
There was a moment of silence on the other end of the phone.
"No. What's wrong?"
His voice suddenly turned somber.
Li Yaoyao's eyes darted around quickly.
It wasn't someone arranged by Qi Yuge who secretly pried open the fence in the middle of the night to move the cages onto the truck. The sounds of flapping wings and low growls could be faintly heard coming from inside the cages.
"Oh no! Someone's stealing your treasures from inside your fence... Where's Oops?!"
She grabbed her phone and ran, her canvas bag swinging wildly beside her.
She was already panting heavily when she rushed into the glass room, the beam of her flashlight sweeping across the withered wooden frame.
It was empty; only a few scattered down feathers remained on the shelf.
She crouched down and picked up a black one with a dark gold tip—it was Yanyan!
"I see their truck!"
She stood up, the beam of her flashlight piercing through the transparent glass wall of the house, pointing to the gap in the cut barbed wire fence surrounding the manor.
Li Yaoyao threw the canvas bag on the ground, took out a Bluetooth earphone from her pocket and put it in her ear to keep on the phone with Qi Yuge.
"I'll go after them!"
After saying that, he rushed out.
"Li Yaoyao, don't go!"
Qi Yuge's voice burst out from the earphone, his tone agitated.
"You're completely incompetent, and you even have night blindness! How are you going to catch up with me?! Come back here!"
"I'm sending Ren Heng with men to handle this, did you hear me?!"
Li Yaoyao did not answer.
She ran across the animal enclosure fence, her heart pounding so hard it felt like it was going to jump out of her throat, yet her mind was surprisingly clear.
She can't drive, and she can't take any of the luxury cars parked in the manor's garage.
You can't even hail a ride-hailing car in this godforsaken place.
She needs a means of transportation.
A vehicle capable of catching up with the white truck.
Then she passed a fence.
A huge creature was standing inside the fence.
"I've got an idea!"
"You believe in me, Qi Yuge!"
·
A white truck is speeding along the emergency lane of the highway.
The driver was a lean man in his early forties, with a blood-soaked bandage wrapped around his right hand, a cigarette between his teeth, and ash scattered all over his pants.
He glanced at the carriage in the rearview mirror; the cages rattled and banged as the train jolted, and the animals inside let out uneasy growls and hisses.
His accomplice in the passenger seat was counting money with his head down, and then cursed.
"These bastards are really hard to deal with. If it weren't for the high price offered by the Qi family patriarch, I wouldn't have taken this deadly job."
The driver shook his hand, which was simply bandaged and still bleeding profusely. The gauze was soaked with blood, and a through wound could be vaguely seen between his fingers.
"Especially that stinky bird... fucking pissed my hand right through."
"Thank goodness I brought a knife, otherwise I'd be the one lying here today."
He was muttering to himself when he glanced at the rearview mirror out of the corner of his eye, and then froze.
He suddenly veered the steering wheel to the side, and the car twisted into a dangerous S-shape on the highway.
"Wait, wait a minute..."
He stared incredulously at the rapidly approaching shadow in the rearview mirror, his voice cracking.
"This madwoman...she's riding an ostrich?!"
"You get down here! Give me back my children...!"
Li Yaoyao shouted at the truck driver, her voice torn to shreds by the wind, but the shape of her mouth was enough to leave the driver stunned.
She lay on the ostrich's back, the wind blowing all her hair back, the soles of her canvas shoes burning hot from the ostrich's feathers.
She squinted her night-blind eyes, staring intently at the taillights of the white truck ahead, and whispered in the ostrich's ear.
"Come on, Daodao! Catch up with that car! Your best friends are all on it!"
Daodao let out a powerful neigh, its two legs crossed and flew, reaching its fastest speed ever.
Daodao refers to this ostrich.
It was a revolutionary friendship fostered by Li Yaoyao feeding her cabbages.
It was originally a short-tempered animal, but unexpectedly, Li Yaoyao let it peck at her hair until it became a bird's nest, and still patiently fed it.
It was a "bird that slipped through the net" that was temporarily unloaded during this transport because it was too irritable. It didn't understand what "good friend" meant, but it could smell the familiar scent wafting from the carriage.
The scent of a honey badger, the stench of a peacock's tail feathers, and the cold, metallic smell of that eagle.
It ran even faster.
This scene was captured by dashcams and passengers' cell phones in other vehicles on the highway. A girl was riding a large gray ostrich at breakneck speed on the emergency lane of the highway.
The video climbed to the top of the local trending searches at an astonishing speed.
The driver stuck half his head out of the car window, looking like he'd seen a ghost.
"Which mental hospital did this guy escape from?! Old Master Qi didn't mention such a person!"
The driver was incredibly stubborn and refused to believe it.
He slammed on the gas, the engine roared, and the speed reached the speed limit for large vehicles on this section of the road.
Li Yaoyao patted Daodao's neck, and the ostrich, not to be outdone, sped up again and bit the truck's tail tightly.
Behind her, the sounds of sirens and helicopter rotors grew louder as they approached, and traffic radio and short video platforms across the city simultaneously captured an epic scene.
A woman is chasing a truck while riding an ostrich.
Uncle in the hat was chasing after her with his head spinning.
The live broadcast vans of major media outlets were chasing after Uncle Hat.
