Death Train: SSS-level talent right from the start!

Chapter 56 [The Mysterious City] The Man-Eating House

Panic spread through the crowd at a visible speed.

The whispers grew louder and louder, and some people began to squeeze towards the center of the square, while others began to shrink into the crowd, and some began to subconsciously look up at the windows of the surrounding buildings.

Time passed by, second by second.

More and more people gathered in the square, returning from all directions.

Chen Ye glanced at the time; it was one o'clock in the afternoon.

Most people have already returned, or rather, those who could return have already returned.

Wang Ze jumped down from the base of the statue and walked to the center of the square.

"Everyone, the situation is very bad. The monsters in this city are completely different from the corpses. Those things can mimic voices, mimicking the voices of people close to you, to lure you in."

"If you get close enough to those houses, you can hear those sounds. Some people say they heard their family members' voices, or that someone was calling their names."

The square was silent for a full five seconds.

Then, someone spoke up.

"So what do we do? Are we just going to sit here and wait?"

"There's no other way now. Jiang Ning sent in five A-level officers, but the result was the same. None of them came out. I saw it with my own eyes."

"Then we can only wait to die. Those ghostly things lure us in during the day, but they'll probably come out on their own at night, leaving us nowhere to hide."

"Stop talking so pessimistically. If the monsters in Corpse City can be killed, then naturally the things here can be killed too. We are not without fighting power."

Nobody knew what to do; it seemed like there was no other good option but to wait.

Chen Ye leaned against a lamppost, his fingers tapping lightly on his knees.

"Chen Ye, what are your thoughts?"

Zhao Hai's voice came from the side.

Chen Ye raised his head, his gaze sweeping over the windows of the Victorian buildings surrounding the square.

Those gazes are still there behind the curtains.

He could sense it.

It wasn't a hallucination, it wasn't psychological; there really was something watching them from behind the window.

Chen Ye shook his head slightly: "I don't have any ideas. The best thing to do right now is to stick together and wait for those things to come out on their own. Obviously, there's something strange about those houses. It's not something that can be entered just by having high talent."

"You mean...we'll just stay in the square? What about at night?"

Li Zheng squatted on the edge of the flower bed, looking up at Chen Ye.

"Tonight..." Chen Ye looked up at the gray sky: "We'll deal with whatever comes our way, but you don't need to worry too much. The difficulty of the trial here is one and a half stars, only half a star higher than Corpse City. I think once the things in those houses come out, they won't be too difficult to deal with. With the strength of our team, we have a chance to survive."

Wang Shuo responded, "The strategist is right. If those monsters were really that powerful, they would have come out and eaten us long ago. Why would they need to use these tricks to lure people in? We're not made of dough."

Chen Ye didn't reply, his gaze falling on Wang Ze.

Wang Ze led the girl with pigtails into Jiang Ning's group and they were talking to each other.

He also noticed Chen Ye's gaze. The two stared at each other for a second from a distance of about twenty meters, and then Wang Ze walked towards him with the girl with pigtails.

Wang Ze walked up to Chen Ye and stood in front of him, pushing up his black-rimmed glasses.

The girl with pigtails behind her wasn't very tall. She was wearing a light gray hooded sweatshirt, and the two pom-poms on the hood jiggled as she walked.

Jiang Ning also came over.

He stood to Wang Ze's right, his arms crossed over his chest. His expression wasn't exactly friendly, but it also lacked the previous ferocity that made him want to devour Chen Ye alive.

Jian Lan followed behind him.

The four people stood in an irregular quadrilateral.

The eyes of everyone else in the square turned to look.

"I know you have conflicts, but now is not the time to settle personal scores. You've seen the situation in this city; the things in those houses are troublesome."

Wang Ze glanced at the three-story Victorian building on the north side.

The eyes behind the curtains are no longer there, but the feeling of being watched still hangs over everyone.

Chen Ye leaned against the lamppost, his hands in his pockets, and didn't say a word.

Zhao Hai stood to his right, his eyes fixed on Jiang Ning. Having almost been tricked to death before, he naturally had no good feelings towards Jiang Ning, but what Wang Ze said made sense.

Jiang Ning's lips twitched, as if she wanted to say something, but then she swallowed it back.

Wang Ze's gaze swept back and forth between the two men: "We are the most capable group on this train. Putting aside our grudges and getting through this crisis is the smart choice."

"No problem."

Chen Ye smiled faintly.

Jiang Ning glanced at him, then at Wang Ze, and let out a muffled groan, which was taken as tacit agreement.

Wang Ze's expression relaxed a little. He turned around, his gaze sweeping over the dark windows around the square. "That's good. By the way, where's your classmate Gu from your carriage? Why hasn't he returned yet?"

"She should be back soon. We're not very familiar with her, but with her abilities, she should be fine."

Chen Ye glanced at the west-facing street, which was deserted, its gray-white surface stretching to the horizon.

"Speak of the devil, and he appears! Gu Qinghuan is back!"

Zhao Hai, standing to the side, pointed to the street to the west.

Everyone's eyes turned to the west at the same time.

Gu Qinghuan walked out from the end of the street, her high ponytail swaying gently as she walked, her pace neither hurried nor slow.

"Xia Yan, please invite Gu over."

Wang Ze said to the girl with pigtails next to him.

"Okay!"

Xia Yan responded and jogged over to welcome Gu Qing.

Xia Yan ran up to Gu Qinghuan and said a few words.

Gu Qinghuan paused for a moment, turned her head to look in Wang Ze's direction, then looked back and followed Xia Yan over.

She walked up to the crowd and stood still.

"Gu, thank you for coming. The situation is not very optimistic right now. We would like to discuss how to deal with tonight's situation. You are the highest level among us, so your talent must be at least S-level or above. I would like to hear your opinion."

Wang Ze's tone was very polite, so polite that he was almost cautious.

Gu Qinghuan glanced at him but didn't say anything.

Wang Ze waited for about two seconds, and seeing that she didn't seem inclined to speak, he wasn't embarrassed and continued, "We have a few problems now. First, the things inside those houses can mimic sounds to lure people in. No one who went in has ever come out, including Jiang Ning's five A-level team members."

He glanced at Jiang Ning, whose face darkened slightly, but she did not refute him.

"Secondly, those things are observing us, but they haven't attacked us proactively. This suggests that they are either waiting for an opportunity or need to follow some kind of rule."

"Third, and most importantly, what about tonight?"

After Wang Ze finished speaking, his gaze swept over the people present.

"After my men went in, I heard sounds of fighting and screams. They fought back; they didn't just die silently."

Jiang Ning leaned against a lamppost, his arms crossed over his chest, his expression now calm.

Wang Ze nodded: "So they can be killed, but the problem is, those houses themselves are strange. Did Jiang receive the messages sent by those five team members?"
