Death Train: SSS-level talent right from the start!
Chapter 55 [The Mysterious Capital] Spying
"Keep your voice down."
Chen Ye turned his head and glanced at him.
Qin Zhaoyang immediately covered his mouth, but the light in his eyes still peeked out from between his fingers.
Zhou Yating walked at the very back of the group, the icy blue halo completely dissipating from her fingertips.
Her pace was neither fast nor slow, her gaze fixed on Chen Ye's back.
From the moment he woke up on the train until now, this person has been concealing his true strength.
While everyone else was panicking, he was calmly analyzing the situation; while everyone else was vying for the right to speak, he was gathering information; and when everyone thought it was a C-level, he punched an S-level opponent away.
"Chen Ye, what exactly is your talent?"
Zhou Yating's voice came from the back of the group.
Zhao Hai slowed his pace and walked in a row with Wang Shuo and Li Zheng.
All five people were looking at Chen Ye.
The group of six people moved slowly along the street heading south.
The Victorian buildings lining the street cast soft shadows in the greyish-white light.
Most of the doors to these houses were open, while a few were closed.
Chen Ye walked at the front, his hands in his pockets and his cleaver tucked into his waistband.
He remained silent for a few seconds.
"Now—"
His voice suddenly stopped, and he turned his head to look at a window on the third floor of a building on his right.
The windowpane was intact, and the curtains were half-drawn. The curtains were made of deep red velvet, which looked heavy and expensive.
But behind the curtains, there was a pair of eyes.
Those eyes were staring at them.
Chen Ye stopped in his tracks.
"What's wrong?"
Zhao Hai followed his gaze, and his fists almost instinctively turned metal.
Chen Ye frowned: "Can you feel it? There's something watching us, right here in these houses."
Wang Shuo took the fire axe off his shoulder, gripped the handle with both hands, and positioned the blade facing outwards.
Li Zheng drew his butcher knife from his waist.
Qin Zhaoyang raised the crossbow and aimed three short arrows at the window Chen Ye was looking at.
The icy blue halo reappeared on Zhou Yating's fingertips.
The six-person team instantly switched from marching to combat mode.
The curtains in the third-floor window of the house moved slightly, but no monster rushed out, and the street remained quiet.
Chen Ye stared at the window for two seconds, then looked away: "Let's leave here first."
The six people quickened their pace.
The speed was twice as fast as before, but it wasn't running.
After walking about fifty meters, a very faint sound came from behind the building. The sound was so faint that it would have been completely unnoticed if the whole street hadn't been eerily quiet.
Chen Ye did not turn around.
Their pace quickened.
"What is that?"
Qin Zhaoyang's voice was kept extremely low.
"I don't know. It should be a monster from this city. But the thing was observing us and didn't attack immediately, which means they need to follow some kind of rule. This is the City of Ghosts, and ghosts usually have rules."
Zhou Yating's voice came from the back of the group. Her pace was much faster than usual, but her breathing was still relatively steady.
"There's something in more than one house."
Zhao Hai's voice was very low. He walked to Chen Ye's right, the metallic sheen on his fists still visible.
"Can I shoot an arrow to try and see what that thing is?"
Qin Zhaoyang held the Gale Crossbow, his gaze sweeping back and forth between the windows of the buildings on both sides, his Adam's apple bobbing faster and faster.
"Don't."
Chen Ye's answer was brief and resolute.
Zhou Yating chimed in, "Chen Ye is right. We can't make a move before we understand the rules. At least those things haven't attacked us yet."
"Rules... I hate these kinds of brain-intensive dungeons the most. It's better to just go for it like in Corpse City."
Qin Zhaoyang muttered something and lowered the crossbow arm even further, but his finger was still on the trigger, ready to fire at any moment.
"Just do it?"
Wang Shuo, carrying a fire axe, glanced at Qin Zhaoyang and twitched his lips: "Back in the Corpse Capital, who was it that got chased by the gray-skinned monster until they lost their shoes?"
"Back then, I didn't have a weapon!"
Even with weapons, you still have to run.
The sound of the two arguing was particularly jarring on the empty street. Chen Ye turned around and glanced at them, and the two of them shut up at the same time.
Chen Ye quickened his pace and brought up the system chat panel, where a blue light screen flickered in the semi-transparent interface.
His fingers swiped quickly across the panel, composing a message and sending it.
[Carriage 3 (Chen Ye): Everyone, do not enter those houses rashly. There is something inside observing us; the specific situation is unclear.]
Less than three seconds after the message was sent, the group chat exploded.
[Carriage 2 (Liu Dong): It's too late. One of our team members went in and hasn't come out yet. I guess he's probably dead.]
[Carriage 4 (Sun Jing): I felt it too. There were things watching us from those houses. At first, I thought I was just hallucinating because I was too nervous.]
[Carriage 1 (Xu Shan): Stop talking. Two people from our team went into a villa, and after they went inside, there was no sound at all. We called from outside, but there was no response.]
[Carriage 8 (Lu Chen): Damn, this place is too eerie. Let's all go back to the square at the crossroads.]
[Carriage 7 (Wang Ze): Everyone, please come back.]
Chen Ye turned off the control panel and quickened his pace.
About half an hour later, Chen Ye and his group returned to the crossroads square, where more than thirty people had already returned.
They were scattered throughout the square, standing in small groups of two or three. Some were talking in hushed tones, some were sitting on the base of the statues lost in thought, and some were leaning against lampposts smoking.
No one spoke loudly, no one laughed, and a heavy, oppressive atmosphere filled the air.
Wang Ze stood on the base of the statue, with a girl with pigtails standing beside him.
He saw Chen Ye's team returning from the south, nodded slightly as a greeting, and then continued talking to the people around him.
Chen Ye and his group walked to the edge of the square and found a relatively open spot to stop.
Zhao Hai stood to his right, Wang Shuo and Li Zheng squatted on the edge of the flower bed, Qin Zhaoyang leaned against the lamppost holding the Gale Crossbow, and Zhou Yating stood in the middle of the group.
"Jiang Ning's team is back."
Zhao Hai's voice came from the side.
Chen Ye turned his head and looked at the street to the north.
Jiang Ning walked out from the end of the street, her face gloomy.
Only five people remained behind him.
Chen Ye glanced around, but Zhu Peng was nowhere to be seen.
"Looks like they went into those houses too, and suffered considerable losses. Is Zhu Peng dead?"
Zhao Hai spoke calmly, without any schadenfreude.
"Jiang Ning's team members are all A-level talents with immediate combat capabilities. It seems that the things in those houses will be difficult to deal with."
Chen Ye turned his gaze away from Jiang Ning.
"We can't go into the house. If those things come out at night, we'll have nowhere to hide and we'll have no choice but to fight them head-on."
Zhao Hai crossed his arms and frowned. Even with his S-level talent, he was still uncertain. The unknown was the most terrifying thing.
Zhou Yating also moved closer to Chen Ye, her gaze falling on a three-story Victorian building on the north side of the square.
The curtains behind the second-floor window of that building moved slightly.
"They are still watching us."
Her voice was very soft, but many people in the square heard it.
