Chapter 122 [Mirror City] Staking Out
"Good luck."
Zhao Hai bent down, picked up the silver treasure chest from the ground, weighed it in his hand, and then put it into his storage space.
Qin Zhaoyang ran up from behind, his gaze lingering on the six-pointed star mark above Zhao Hai's head: "Brother Hai got the Survival Mark too! Now our team has three people who have completed the mission!"
Zhao Hai smiled slightly, took out a piece of cloth from his storage space, and wiped the monster blood off his tiger-finger fist.
"What should we do with this mirror? Should we break it?"
Not far away, Wen Ning looked at an oval mirror in front of her and asked a question.
The elite monster that Zhao Hai killed was a Mirror Guard that came out of this mirror.
The mirror's design is similar to the one Jiang Ning's team saw in the square, only much smaller. This mirror is only three meters high and one meter wide, standing abruptly on the street.
The mirror didn't reflect the buildings across the street, but rather a chaotic gray expanse, exactly like the huge mirror, except that the numbers weren't displayed above the mirror.
Chen Ye walked to the oval mirror and pondered for a moment: "Don't break this mirror. It's almost time for today. Let's rest here and see if any more elite monsters will come out of this mirror. It's now basically confirmed that killing elite monsters will give you a survival mark 100% of the time."
After saying that, he turned his head and glanced at the sky.
The pale light of the sky was dimming at a visible rate.
There was no sun or clouds in the sky, only a uniform gray-white canopy. The brightness of that canopy changed with time, from bright white in the morning to blazing white at noon, and then from blazing white to dark white at dusk.
At this moment, the sky had turned a dark white.
Wen Ning stood to Chen Ye's right and glanced at the sky following his gaze: "Alright, let's rest here. It's only the first day of the 72-hour trial, no need to rush."
Zhou Yating walked up from the back of the group, her gaze sweeping over the mirrored walls on both sides of the street, then glancing at the lone oval mirror standing in the middle of the street: "Is it safe to camp here? What if the elite monster in the mirror comes out at night? Wouldn't we be within its attack range?"
Chen Ye glanced at her, a slight smile playing on his lips: "We need to stay within its attack range. If it doesn't come out, how can we help you get the survival mark?"
Wen Ning, standing to the side, smiled when she heard this, a smile that seemed to say, "Just as I thought."
Zhao Hai walked over from beside the corpse of the Mirror Guard, the silver-gray sheen on his fists completely gone.
His gaze lingered on the oval mirror for a moment before returning to Chen Ye: "So, what are the arrangements for tonight's watch?"
"Hai-ge, you and Wang Shuo, Li Zheng are in a group." Chen Ye's gaze turned to Wen Ning and Zhou Yating: "Wen Ning and the class monitor are in a group, and Zhao Yang and I are in a group. Our main task is to keep an eye on that mirror."
Zhao Hai nodded.
Wen Ning had no objection.
The sky grew darker and darker.
Mirror City has no streetlights, no artificial light sources; the only light comes from the gray-white sky overhead.
As the sky dimmed to its lowest point, the entire city was enveloped in a somber twilight.
As dusk fell, the mirrored floor tiles lost their daytime reflectivity, transforming into a dull, smooth surface.
The mirrored facades of the buildings on both sides of the street no longer reflect images; the distorted figures and overlapping building outlines are all sunk into the dark mirrors.
Chen Ye's team set up tents next to the oval mirror.
The three tents are less than a meter apart, with their openings facing the mirror, and the distance between them is less than ten meters.
This distance is arrogant, but it is indeed effective. If an elite monster appears in the mirror, they can spot it and engage it immediately.
Night falls.
Zhao Hai, Wang Shuo, and Li Zheng sat in front of the tent, serving as the first shift of night watchmen.
The six-pointed star above Zhao Hai's head shone brighter in the night, its silvery light cascading down and illuminating an area of two or three meters around him.
The light wasn't dazzling; it was like a small lamp hanging overhead.
Wang Shuo squatted down next to Zhao Hai, the axe resting horizontally on his knees, his gaze fixed on the quietly standing oval mirror: "Brother Hai, how many days have we been on the death train?"
Zhao Hai glanced at him sideways, then thought for a moment: "I didn't keep track, it must have been quite a few days."
"One day in Corpse City, two days in Ghost City, three days in Infinite City, two days in Insect Nest, so the time spent on the train should be four days. Counting today, it should be thirteen days."
Li Zheng's voice came from the other side of Zhao Hai.
"Only thirteen days? I thought it had been much longer." Wang Shuo lowered his head, his gaze falling on his hands, calloused from gripping the axe handle for so long. "Brother Hai, do you think Li Zheng and I can survive this survival trial?"
Zhao Hai looked at him, remained silent for a moment, then reached out and patted his shoulder: "Yes, Chen Ye will definitely find a way to help you get the survival mark. I believe in him."
He said this with a very firm tone, without any hesitation.
Wang Shuo nodded, then turned to look at Li Zheng: "We're really unlucky. On the school basketball team, we're not good enough to be substitutes, always sitting on the bench. In this death game, we're just a burden. It's only thanks to Hai Ge and the strategist that we're able to get us kicked out of the team. If it were anyone else, they would have kicked us out long ago."
Li Zheng gave a wry smile and didn't reply.
He knew that what Wang Shuo said was true. They were currently at a low level, without powerful skills or high attribute bonuses. They had a hard time even fighting two-star ordinary monsters, and they couldn't do any real damage to elite monsters.
They were already the weakest in the team, even Qin Zhaoyang and Zhou Yating were a level higher than them. They were only alive now because Chen Ye and Zhao Hai were holding the line.
Li Zheng's gaze fell on the quiet mirror in the distance. His lips moved as if he wanted to say something, but in the end he said nothing.
Seeing that he didn't speak, Wang Shuo turned to Zhao Hai and asked, "Brother Hai, do you think we can still go back?"
"Don't overthink it, let's get through this first."
Zhao Hai sighed. He had no idea whether he could go back. All he could do now was survive.
Wang Shuo nodded and said nothing more.
The three people sat in front of the tent, their eyes all fixed on the mirror, where a silver six-pointed star was slowly rotating above Zhao Hai's head.
Three hours have passed.
The mirror remained completely still.
The oval mirror remained a chaotic gray, with no elite monsters emerging and no unusual activity, as quiet as an ordinary mirror.
At this moment, Wen Ning and Zhou Yating emerged from the middle tent.
The two still looked sleepy, but their eyes were clear.
Wen Ning looked at Zhao Hai beside her and said, "You guys go back to your tents and rest. We'll keep watch."
"Okay, just call out if anything happens." Zhao Hai stood up from the ground, stretched his neck, and then glanced at Wang Shuo and Li Zheng. "Let's rest."
Wang Shuo and Li Zheng nodded.
The three of them crawled back into the tent.
