Warden of the Beast World: Everyone is a Hakimi
Chapter 22 Free-Range Chickens
The wild crabapple was roasted from noon until the afternoon.
Two lamb legs were placed side by side on the grill, with a whole row of lamb chops stacked next to them. The charcoal fire burned slowly under the grill, and the orange-red flames reflected on her face, with a fine layer of sweat on her forehead.
She had encountered this problem before when the lamb leg was too big, and the outside was burnt while the inside was still raw. So today she deliberately lowered the charcoal temperature and slowly grilled it by turning the skewer.
As the oil dripped onto the charcoal fire, small flames burst forth. She then used a brush to apply a layer of honey water to the surface of the lamb leg. The honey quickly caramelized under the high temperature, mixing with the cumin and chili powder to form a sweet, spicy, and crispy outer shell.
Ghost Hunter lay at her feet the whole time, his grey-blue eyes fixed on the grill. She gave Ghost Hunter a piece of the grilled lamb chop to try first. The wolf rolled his tongue and chewed it up, even the bone, before swallowing it. Then he continued to stare at the grill.
By the time the two lamb legs and all the lamb chops were roasted, it was nearly four in the afternoon. Ye Tang packed Jing Yao's portion into a large insulated box: two lamb legs, eight lamb chops, and a large bundle of catnip, without any nutritional supplements.
She found the insulated box in the Space Supermarket. It was originally her stockpiled outdoor camping equipment. It was large enough to hold a whole roasted lamb, and it was just right for holding Marshal White Tiger's afternoon tea.
She moved the box of meat to a separate delivery cart and then prepared meals for the other four people again. The catnip was still there, but the sandwiches were gone. She made several vegetable salads with freshly picked lettuce and tomatoes from the spiritual field, which were refreshing and light, and served each person with a nutritional supplement.
The delivery order has also been changed. Previously, the meals were delivered in order from number one to number five, but today she decided to reverse it, delivering from number five to number one, and leaving Jingyao's meal for last, delivering it to him in a separate cart.
The reason is that the insulated box is too big, the food cart can't hold that much stuff, and Jingyao's meal is not up to standard with the other four people, so serving them separately seems more formal.
In Observation Zone 5, Cangming remained in the same position with his back to the door. However, this time he didn't say anything about "dropping it off and leaving." Instead, he slightly turned his head, revealing half of his handsome profile and a deep blue eye, and glanced at the vegetable salad in Ye Tang's hand.
Ye Tang placed the plate by the pool, put her hands on her hips, and said, "Vegetable salad, it's good for vitamins, remember to eat it," before pushing the cart away. Cang Ming waited until she was far away, then turned around, opened the salad box, stared at the bright green lettuce leaves and bright red cherry tomatoes for a few seconds, then reached out, pinched a leaf, and popped it into his mouth.
In observation area number four, Chi Heng tilted his head slightly when he saw the vegetable salad. Birds' expressions are not easy to read, but he swiftly snatched the salad box. The nutrient solution was still kicked into the corner.
Observation Zone No. 3.
The eagle swooped down from its perch and landed on the stone platform inside the observation wall. Its silver-gray eagle eyes glanced at the food tray pushed in through the teleportation port—a bundle of catnip, a box of vegetable salad, and a nutrient solution.
His gaze swept back and forth between the three items twice, then he looked up and peered through the glass wall into the corridor. Ye Tang was pushing a food cart toward Observation Area Two, showing no intention of stopping, and these were the same items she had just delivered to Observation Areas Four and Five.
Ling Shou's eagle eyes narrowed slightly. He had been lying on the perch earlier and had seen Ye Tang push a separate food cart into Observation Zone No. 1. The insulated box on the cart was ridiculously large. After opening it, she took out roasted lamb leg, roasted lamb chops, and a bunch of other things that he could smell even through the glass wall. Jing Yao immediately buried his head in his food and hadn't looked up yet.
His plate contained only grass and salad, and that damned nutritional supplement. Of course, he wouldn't eat the supplement. Jing Yao had lamb legs, Jing Yao had lamb chops, Jing Yao even had double the amount of meat. He, Ling Shou, only had a box of leafy greens.
He raised his wings and pressed the call bell inside the observation wall.
Just as Ye Tang finished delivering the vegetable salad to Han Zhou and was pushing the food cart back to retrieve Jing Yao's insulated box, she heard a series of urgent ringing bells coming from Observation Zone No. 3.
She walked over and saw Ling Shou standing on the stone platform inside the glass wall, his wings slightly spread, his eagle eyes staring at her, his whole aura conveying four words—I'm very unhappy.
"Little sprout," Ling Shou's voice was cold, carrying the sharpness unique to birds of prey and a hint of barely suppressed annoyance, "why am I different from him?"
Ye Tang placed her hand on the armrest of the food cart, looked up at the peregrine falcon behind the glass wall, her eyes calm and open, "Of course they paid for it, free-range chicken."
Ling Shou choked. Not because of the answer "give money," but because of the three words that followed. "Free-range chicken." This female, this tiny female whose height was less than a fraction of his wingspan, called him a free-range chicken.
He is the young patriarch of the Skyfeather Falcon Clan, an S-rank combatant of the Empire, and a high-altitude overlord whose flight speed ranks among the top three of orcs of the same rank. A free-range chicken? The kind of fat chicken that digs in the yard and pecks at insects?
"Can't we eat first and pay later?" Ling Shou's tone carried a hint of gritted teeth. As the young patriarch of the Skyfeather Falcon Clan, from hatching to adulthood, what could he not ask for with a word? No one had ever told him to "pay first before eating."
Ye Tang pushed the food cart forward half a meter, turned around, put her hands on her hips, and tilted her head back, replying, "I'm afraid you'll renege on your bill!"
Ling Shou laughed in exasperation. He was going to renege on his debt? No one had ever dared to use the word "renege" to question his credibility.
He looked down at the female outside the glass wall, who wasn't even as tall as him when he stood up straight. She was arguing with him, her cheeks slightly puffed out, and there wasn't a trace of fear in her eyes. Interesting. Very interesting.
"This young master never reneges on his debts." He folded his wings, jumped down from the stone platform, stood in front of the glass wall, and looked down at her. A glint of a half-smile flashed in his eagle eyes. "Give me the meat first, and the money—"
Before he could finish speaking, a crisp "ding" came from the adjacent observation area number four. Chi Heng had somehow already opened the communication panel in the observation area, precisely pecking at the buttons with his beak before speaking a few words into the communicator. A few minutes later, Ye Tang's personal terminal vibrated, displaying a transfer notification from Lu Yu.
Chi Heng, with an unfinished popsicle stick dangling from its mouth, leisurely lay on the rocky hill, its crimson tail feathers dangling from the edge of the hill, swaying back and forth.
He glanced through the glass wall at Ling Shou, who was still arguing with Ye Tang, and a very obvious look of glee appeared on his bird-like face, a look that suggested he was enjoying watching the drama unfold.
In Observation Zone Two, Hanzhou acted even faster than Chiheng.
Ye Tang was standing outside Observation Zone No. 3, arguing with Ling Shou about being called "free-range chickens," when her personal terminal vibrated again. She looked down and saw a second transfer notification from Lu Yu—food expenses for Hanzhou, with a note that read: No nutritional supplements needed, just make do today, normal tomorrow.
She paused for a moment, then looked up at Observation Zone Two. Han Zhou's dark figure stood behind the glass wall, his pale golden leopard eyes calmly watching her, nodding slightly—so slightly that she would have missed it if she hadn't been looking right at the time.
Ye Tang immediately abandoned her fight with Ling Shou. She was a professional; the client had paid, so the service had to be provided immediately. She rummaged through the food cart and pulled out two insulated boxes. With a swift mental operation in her spatial supermarket, she took out two boxes of ready-to-eat chicken breasts, some original flavor and some black pepper flavor, each bag clean and neatly arranged.
She deftly unwrapped the package, divided it into two portions, and then, after thinking for a moment, added an extra box of ice cream to Chiheng's portion. It was warmer where Chiheng was, and he loved the ice cream she gave him last time, so this time she upgraded it to a box of strawberry ice cream.
She first pushed the cart to Observation Zone Two. The security door opened, and she placed the tray in front of Han Zhou, along with the box of chicken breasts, her tone apologetic: "Commander Han, we're really out of roast meat. This will have to do for today; I'll make up for it tomorrow."
Han Zhou lowered his head and sniffed the chicken breast, then picked up a bag of black pepper flavored chicken, retreated to the corner, and showed his acceptance through his actions. He tore open the packaging bag very politely, his leopard ears slightly pressed back as he chewed, and his tail gently swept across the ground.
Ye Tang pushed the cart to observation area number four and handed the chicken breast and strawberry ice cream to Chi Heng. When Chi Heng saw the strawberry pattern on the ice cream box, its tail feathers fluffed up, and it carefully pecked open the lid with its beak, took a bite of the pink ice cream, and then paused for a moment.
The Vermilion Bird Clan's body temperature dropped by a fraction of a degree in that instant—not because the ice cream was cold, but because it was sweet. Strawberry flavor, sweet, icy, and rich in milky flavor. He lowered his head and took another big peck, his tail feathers swaying behind him more enthusiastically than the Ghost Hunter's tail.
In Observation Zone No. 3, Ling Shou watched all this and was furious.
"Little Sprout!" His wings involuntarily spread open, his silver-gray falcon feathers standing on end. A sharp eagle's cry came through the glass wall, tinged with a trembling sense of vulnerability. "Who stops arguing halfway through to go deliver food to someone else!"
"Free-range chickens, pay first if you want to eat meat." Ye Tang rolled her eyes before leaving.
"Little bean sprout, you—" Ling Shou was even angrier when he saw her eye roll.
Ling Shou stood behind the glass wall, her hawk-like eyes wide with rage. Pay first, pay first—money was all she could think about. No—wasn't his credit more valuable than those guys'?
He was the young patriarch of the Skyfeather Falcon Clan, and his assets were no less than those of Hanzhou. He just hadn't had a chance to spend the money yet, and she actually left him standing here for the sake of money. The other four people were eating, but his plate only had a box of salad and a bottle of nutritional supplement.
Ling Shou folded his wings and hopped back onto his perch. His eagle eyes looked down at the petite figure pushing an empty food cart back down the corridor. Make him bow his head? Impossible. He was the young patriarch of the Skyfeather Falcon Clan. From hatching to adulthood, others had always accommodated him; there was no reason for him to accommodate others.
