Warcraft: When NPCs Have Player Panels
Chapter 25 Brotherhood 1
Toby and Isolde's gravestones are in a corner of the Lawrence Chapel, just a rough wooden plaque with their names crookedly carved on it.
William walked out of the church, the chill of the tombstone still lingering in his heart. The silhouette of a noble carriage passing by in the distance, the huddled corpses of the poor by the roadside, and Toby's dying pleas kept swirling in his mind.
Main Quest: A Crossroads of Fate
[Mission Description: Perhaps the strangers in this land instilled too many things you shouldn't have known, or perhaps you're simply a kind person by nature. You're tired of this world, tired of this endless oppression. You decide to make a change, but this change will inevitably affect the future. When everything settles down, standing at the end and looking back at your past self, I hope you won't regret your decision today.]
[Special Note: Once you accept this mission, death is true death; there is no second chance. You will be back on track, with no possibility of ever awakening again.]
[Special Note: After accepting this mission, the world will change, and outsiders will no longer be able to enter this plane. This plane will be completely isolated until the final mission is completed.]
[Special Note: Upon accepting this mission, the world will become more realistic, and your personal system will be immediately updated to be better adapted to a real world.]
[Mission Reward: As you wish.]
[Accept the mission?]
"accept!"
William accepted without hesitation! He was fed up with this kind of life!
The moment the thought formed in William's mind, the world before him suddenly transformed into a series of frames, outlined by countless interwoven, transparent lines. Before he could even see it clearly, it all slowly vanished.
When he regained consciousness, he found himself still standing in the same spot, but the faces of the people in the world came alive.
They were no longer like before... in that indescribable state, as if something was restraining their behavior.
But now, that constraint is gone.
Sigrún has taught at the Iceland University of the Arts as a part-time lecturer since and was Dean of the Department of Fine Art from -. In – she held a research position at Reykjavík Art Museum focusing on the role of women in Icelandic art. She studied fine art at the Icelandic College of Arts and Crafts and at Pratt Institute, New York, and holds BA and MA degrees in art history and philosophy from the University of Iceland. Sigrún lives and works in Iceland.
On this day, he led his soldiers on patrol, his eyes sharper than ever before, even his breathing deliberately restrained.
He thought about many things, carefully considering the words the stranger had whispered in his ear. He had never been curious about the contents of the stranger's words before, but today, he began to ponder whether what the stranger said could truly become a reality.
But he couldn't remember the names of those people; he only remembered that there had been many strangers who had taught him a lot.
After all, three years have passed since the stranger left this world, and people have gradually gotten used to life without him.
But the man's words became clearer and clearer in William's ears.
Going it alone will never make a difference.
As night fell, the snowstorm subsided slightly, and the magical streetlights of Lordaeron's new capital lit up one by one. The dim light reflected off the snow, and William, his steps uneven, finished his patrol for the night.
[Daily Task: Zone Patrol]
[Mission Description: As the sheriff of the slums, maintaining community stability is your responsibility. Everyone feels safe when they see you. Because you represent order in this city, even though many of them are not good people.]
[Quest Reward: 1 gold, 5 silver, 45 copper. Your prestige among the poor increases.]
[Special Note: After the system upgrade, the amount of currency directly rewarded by daily tasks was deemed too high and did not meet the requirements of a complete and realistic world. The task rewards will be retained, but starting with the next task, the currency rewards will reflect actual market prices, and will also incorporate reputation, favor, and affinity points, prioritizing those most needed and best aligned with the world's needs.]
William glanced at the updated system but didn't say anything; it was a change he had expected.
This time, instead of returning to the barracks to hand over his duties as usual, William wandered around the barracks, finding familiar faces one by one.
The first person they found was veteran Hawke.
He patrolled with him in the slums for two years. He, his wife, and children all lived in the slums, and it was William who rescued him from there. Last winter, they almost froze and starved to death, but William provided them with financial assistance, which saved their lives.
Name: Hawke
Identity: Human from Lordaeron
Rank: Corporal
Occupation: Warrior
Race: human
Status: Healthy
My current wish: What should I eat tonight?
"Hawk, are you free tonight? Come over to my place for a get-together." William said as usual, blinking to make the system disappear from his sight. "It's been a long time since we got together. Same as always, it's my treat."
"Of course!" Hawke hesitated for a moment, then nodded in agreement. His whole family owed William their lives, and he was willing to follow William no matter what he did.
Next, William found the mage Lyra. Lyra was a young woman in her early twenties, whose parents were ordinary commoners. She studied magic at the arcane academy in the monastery, and through her talent, she broke through the limitations of her social status to become a true mage.
However, due to his humble origins, he could only secure a position as a battle mage in the Crusades, and was once a patrolman under William.
Her daily life was far from ideal. Magical research required financial support, which her family simply couldn't afford. Furthermore, mages were mostly descendants of nobles, and commoner mages like her were often ostracized and squeezed out by the noble mages, forced to do mage-like tasks.
Name: Leila
Identity: Human from Lordaeron
Race: human
Rank: Intermediate Battle Mage
Class: Mage
Status: Healthy
Current wish: to stay away from the aristocracy and look forward to a brighter future.
"Lyra, are you free tonight? Come over to my place." William's tone was gentler than when he spoke to Hawke. He knew Lyra was sensitive and understood the difficulties she faced in the military.
Lyra wore a faded red Crusader robe and used a simple oak wand for casting spells. Without hesitation, she nodded at William's invitation: "Yes, Captain William."
William had helped her many times, and she had no reason to refuse his invitation.
William then found the priest Thomas, as well as soldiers Carl and Evan, and the mage Elliott.
Each and every one of them was carefully selected by him.
There were no paladins, not a single one.
Several years ago, a number of paladins in the Silver Hand perished in the war against the Scourge. The Alliance then realized the importance of making paladins more accessible to civilians, and under pressure from the war against the Scourge, Lordaeron and all of humanity began to vigorously expand the number of Holy Light practitioners.
This led to an exponential increase in the number of priests, clergy, prosecutors, missionaries, and monks within the Church of the Holy Light. The benefit of this was the successful containment of the Scourge's rampage, allowing humanity to barely survive on the lands of Lordaeron.
The profession of paladin, with its aristocratic connotations, quickly took root among the common people. However, because this profession had long been controlled by the nobility, those who were now either sons of nobles or henchmen of the nobility were simply not allowed to stand with them, the common folk, and there were certain things they couldn't know.
Paladins among the common people are still very rare. But without a doubt, they are all devout messengers of the Holy Light. They would never associate with him. William knew this perfectly well.
The people he chose were either of similar background to him, had received favors from him, or were talented but unappreciated. Most importantly, they, like him, had witnessed the suffering of the poor, felt sympathy for them, and harbored varying degrees of resentment towards the privileged aristocracy.
William's home was near the military camp. Thanks to a divine blessing three years ago, a new town sprang up overnight, and William's ancestral two-story wooden house was transformed into a huge mansion overnight.
Because William always lived alone, his mind was always filled with worries, and his house was always cold and deserted. But today, the crackling firewood in the fireplace dispelled the chill from outside.
He had prepared fruit, ale, dark bread, wheat cakes, as well as large pieces of smoked meat and blood sausage in advance.
These things are considered quite a good meal in the capital city today.
Several people arrived one after another. After entering the house, they subconsciously rubbed their hands together, sat around the fireplace, and looked puzzled, but no one took the initiative to ask a question.
Side Quest: Brotherhood, Here I Come!
[Task Description: You have a very lofty ideal, but this ideal will face unprecedented resistance in this world. Finding like-minded partners is a great option.]
[Task Reward: Experience +1000]
[Special Note: After the system upgrade, experience points have been determined to be inconsistent with the requirements of a complete real world. Experience points will be replaced with items and props that conform to the real world. You can choose from alchemy potions, magic scrolls, and magical materials.]
