Chapter 15 Detective Phil Coulson
Chapter 15 Detective Phil Coulson (Seeking investment!)
In fact, Coulson didn't find much useful information at the scene. The shoe prints left by the young mage on the asphalt were impossible to compare, as those shoes were made in Kamar-Taj and were low-level magical items with some protective capabilities. The only thing he knew was the temperature at the time, but this only increased his suspicion of the mutant's danger level. The trace evidence also found some red fibers at the epicenter of the high temperature, but Coulson couldn't be certain that these were 100% connected to the case.
Coulson's admiration for Nick Fury deepened once more, primarily because Nick Fury had lost an eye fighting aliens. (Coulson was unaware that Nick had been blinded by a cat.)
As expected of the director of S.H.I.E.L.D., he was able to accurately deduce the level of danger without even arriving at the scene, and then dispatch an agent of such appropriate rank to handle the situation. However, these ideas were useless, and Coulson was not going to write such nauseating flattery in the report.
However, there was some good news. Based on the predicted body shape comparison, the person who robbed the senator and the person who left the shoe print were the same person. He has now determined that there were two mutants: one capable of emitting high temperatures and brightness, and the other possibly manipulating the air or something similar. Moreover, the area affected by the disaster that day was not limited to the suburbs; the traces of destruction extended from the city hall to the outskirts.
The agents didn't believe in coincidences; it was impossible for two strange mutants to be together that day. This was a group operation.
This made Coulson sigh again.
Some mutants, after suddenly gaining power, will do things they wouldn't normally dare to do, such as storming into a company and killing the boss who exploits employees and demands a 996 work schedule; or running into alleys to commit crimes and forming a small gang to bully men and women; but even those mutants who live peaceful lives are very likely to go down the path of antisocial behavior, so S.H.I.E.L.D. will also monitor mutants who have not yet done anything bad.
This is a very complicated matter, because no one wants their neighbor to be carrying a submachine gun, RPG, or other weapons at any time. Even if the neighbor promises not to fire, who can believe them? Therefore, mutants want a peaceful life, but as soon as their abilities are exposed, they are very likely to be reported.
However, S.H.I.E.L.D.'s surveillance system is highly inhumane. Installing monitors and listening devices in targets' homes is commonplace. Very few mutants can tolerate privacy breaches and constant surveillance. Targets often lose their jobs due to S.H.I.E.L.D.'s checks; they have no choice but to resist. But overall, this surveillance system is still quite effective. Under S.H.I.E.L.D.'s surveillance, the likelihood of mutants committing crimes is greatly reduced, and targets are often killed by the action team at the very beginning of their operations…
Coulson believed that the mutants he was investigating were impoverished and forced into crime, targeting members of the capitalist class and those with a certain social standing. According to Coulson's investigation, Senator Ricky White's White family was among those involved in the Salem witch trials. The two mutants, he thought, had only recently acquired their abilities and were still very unskilled at controlling them, which explained why they were using them in the countryside. They probably didn't want to harm anyone; otherwise, the senator and his bodyguard wouldn't still be alive.
Thinking this, Coulson relaxed a little. They were people who needed help, and he was confident he could calm the two mutants down. But the problem was, S.H.I.E.L.D. couldn't find them at all. This place was in the suburbs, with no surveillance cameras and no cars parked here, so they couldn't check the dashcam footage.
Just when he was at his wit's end, a new clue came his way—the Sitwell agent found a waitress in the coffee shop across from the city hall. In the waitress's memory, there were two strangely dressed customers yesterday, and the reason she remembered them so well was that one of them was a big eater and the other was very good-looking.
The coffee shop's surveillance footage had been transferred to S.H.I.E.L.D.'s computers. Coulson, who had arrived at the coffee shop, took the tablet and looked at the surveillance footage.
"A child?" Although the surveillance footage was somewhat blurry, after adjustments by the technicians, Coulson was still able to discern Salomon's height relative to the others, and the image of Salomon's face confirmed his suspicions. It could only be said that Salomon had overlooked something crucial; he only remembered to cover his face at the robbery scene, but forgot to do so in the coffee shop—though this was understandable, as he had initially thought the operation didn't need to be so brutal.
The brown-haired waitress nodded and said, "She looks about twelve or thirteen years old."
Coulson nodded. He was now glad he hadn't asked Melinda for help. Facing a mutant who was also a child, there was a high chance that it would rekindle Melinda's painful memories of Balin Island. Although the title "Iron Rider" was cool, it had plunged Melinda into deep self-blame.
"What are they wearing?" Coulson pointed to the surveillance footage. "This fat man looks like an Eastern monk; I've seen that 'warrior monk' before, and this kid... a wizard?"
The waitress shrugged. As mentioned before, Salem is a tourist town, so dressing like a wizard isn't unusual. Salomon's red robe confirmed to Coulson that Salomon was indeed at the center of the heatwave.
"Alright, thank you for your help. We won't disturb your work any longer." After asking the waitress to leave, Coulson looked at Sitwell.
"What?" Sitwell blinked, but the light reflected from his eyes made it impossible for Coulson to see his expression.
"Request access to the surveillance footage." Coulson sighed. He really didn't want to lay a hand on a child, but based on his guess, these two mutants shouldn't be the most heinous criminals, so Coulson intended to help them as much as possible within his authority.
Unfortunately, even after searching through all the surveillance footage in Salem, Salomon and the Little King Wizard were not seen leaving the town. This almost led S.H.I.E.L.D. to believe that Salomon and the Little King Wizard were locals or tourists in a private car, since they were not seen on any of the long-distance buses leaving the town.
"We've completely run out of leads," Sitwell said. "Let's check the identity database and do facial recognition."
Coulson was silent for a moment, then picked up his teacup and took a sip of coffee—why was this coffee even more sour than instant coffee?
A momentary lapse in concentration didn't interrupt Coulson's thoughts; he ultimately nodded in agreement. This mutant was extremely dangerous, and Coulson couldn't imagine the horrific consequences if the target went out of control in a confined space, such as an elevator or a bus.
Coulson must find him as soon as possible.
After about an hour, when Coulson could no longer tolerate the waitress who brought him an incredibly sour coffee with a smile, Agent Sitwell came to remind him that the target's identity information had been found. Coulson fled his seat as if granted a pardon.
"This is the target," Sitwell said, pointing to the computer. Coulson looked and saw the same face as in the surveillance footage—
