Along with these materials, there was also an envelope in the suitcase. Connor stared intently at the envelope, his intuition telling him that what was inside was very important!
Slowly removing the inkpad, Connor opened the envelope and found a letter and a message inside.
"Connor, by the time you received this letter, I had already begun my actions. As my disciple, I believe you have sensed both danger and opportunity. That's right, the Secret Society has begun to make itself great. Now, let's see what happens!"
"Connor, I don't need you to do anything right now. You just need to be a spectator and watch quietly as this unfolds!"
"As your mentor, although I cannot guide you during this time, I have assigned you an assignment. The answer will be on page 148 of my alchemy manual. Remember, when you gaze into the abyss, the abyss also gazes into you!"
Connor spent a full ten minutes reading Reyes's short two hundred words on the letter.
"Sigh..." Connor suddenly felt like Sun Wukong could never escape the palm of the Buddha.
Shaking his head, Connor mentally asked the chip, "Chip, what does page 148 of Reyes Alchemy contain?"
"Ding! Page 148 of Reyes Alchemy records the crafting method for a replica of the Castia Staff, a level-two enchanted item! The materials for crafting the replica of the Castia Staff include Komoin Gems, Golden Poplar Wood, Mithril..."
Comparing the raw materials required for this replica of the Castiel Staff, Connor checked the alchemy materials in the briefcase and found that everything matched. The task mentioned in Reyes' letter referred to Connor's crafting of this so-called replica of the Castiel Staff!
"A counterfeit?" Connor murmured the word, and began to ponder the contents of the Castilian staff in his mind.
After pondering for quite some time in the carriage, Connor's expression turned somewhat surprised. Enchanted items that could be copied by others should all be of great origin, but Connor could not find any information about the Castia Staff in his memory.
"Is there any record of this Castilian Staff in 'Reyes Alchemy'?" Connor commanded. He knew very well that Reyes had asked him to forge this replica of the Castilian Staff, and it couldn't possibly be as simple as an assignment given by a tutor to a student, as Reyes had claimed. If it were, then Reyes wouldn't be Reyes!
"Beep! In the book 'Reyes Alchemy,' the only information about the Castia Staff on page 148 is the forging steps and required alchemical materials for a replica. There's no background information, rumors, or anything else mentioned." A clear, cold female voice from the chip echoed in Connor's mind.
The chip's explanation only deepened Connor's doubts. Connor thought Reyes Alchemy was quite comprehensive, with detailed records of alchemy techniques and enchanted items, as well as background information and legends. Only a very few lacked these, and he never expected that the Castia Staff would be one of those rare exceptions.
"Castia...Castia..." Connor silently repeated the name several times in his mind, shaking his head helplessly. He still had far too little information, and it all came from Reyes alone. If Reyes didn't want him to know, he was essentially blind and deaf. The Mönchengladbach Club, a channel he had painstakingly expanded, had been indefinitely suspended. Just thinking about it made Connor want to swear.
The lack of information made Connor put aside the matter of the Castia Staff for the time being. He actually valued Reyes' last sentence more: "When you gaze into the abyss, the abyss also gazes into you."
Connor's past as a writer on Earth had made him quite knowledgeable and able to remember things well. If he remembered correctly, this quote came from "Beyond Goodness" by Friedrich Nietzsche, the famous 19th-century German philosopher and poet.
The original text reads, "He who fights with monsters should look to it that he himself does not become a monster. And if you gaze long enough into an abyss, the abyss will gaze back into you." But in this world, this famous quote from Nietzsche has been attributed to the plagiarist "Raul the Great"!
When you gaze into the abyss, the abyss also gazes into you. This can be simply understood as: when you examine evil, evil, like a mirror, examines your own heart. Human nature is complex; there is no pure good or pure evil. Often, the two are interchangeable or coexist.
In his letter to himself, Reyes quoted this line. What was he trying to imply to himself?
Is the Abyss a metaphor for a secret society? As a dark wizarding organization, the secret society seems like a plausible analogy.
Was Reyes warning himself that while he was using the Secret Society, the Secret Society was also using him?
After carefully considering the sentence, Connor felt that Reyes's words might have meant that, or they might not...
"FUCK! To hell with it!" Connor growled, then drove the carriage toward his apartment. Since he couldn't figure it out, he decided to stop thinking about it altogether. As the saying goes, there's always a way out.
Back at the apartment, Connor had barely opened the security door with his key and walked slowly into the lobby when his eyes unconsciously narrowed.
"SHIT! I forgot to buy beer again! My memory is terrible!" Connor slapped his forehead and muttered to himself as he turned and walked toward the door.
But after taking only three steps, Connor's expression suddenly changed. He turned around abruptly, and a faint purple ring hanging around his neck flashed with a ghostly light. A small, pale purple shield immediately appeared in front of Connor.
"Bang!"
Just as the pale purple light shield appeared, five pale blue wind blades, carrying tremendous impact, silently struck Connor, hitting the light shield with a muffled thud.
"Huh... I didn't expect that even though the Ferguson family has begun to decline, they actually equipped young master Connor with a level two defensive magic item? As expected, the foundation of hereditary nobles should not be underestimated!" A leisurely female voice entered Connor's ears.
Upon hearing the sound, Connor focused his gaze on the doorway of his bedroom, where a woman wearing a purple robe and a mask stood. This woman was none other than the mysterious woman in purple robes who had commissioned Connor to refine the Moretti Blood Curse at the Menxing Club that day!
(I've lost a lot of favorites lately, so I plan to revise the content after my Central University of Finance and Economics exam tomorrow, fixing some of the parts that people think are problematic. So, I'll guarantee at least one chapter tomorrow, and I'll try my best to update twice after the revisions! Please forgive me for the lack of updates lately!!!)
