Chapter 82 Courage

Chapter 82 Courage

"I am Connor Ferguson! Let me in!" Instead of barging in rashly, Connor approached the door and hurriedly whispered anxiously:

"Connor? What are you doing here? Don't come in yet, I need to pack my things!" After hearing Connor's shout, Varga's voice rang out in the drafty slum. After about half a minute, she quietly opened the door and let Connor in.

Upon entering the room, Connor could clearly see that there were some black potions placed near the windows and doors.

A cold sweat broke out on Connor's back as he carefully scanned the black potions. There was no doubt that these black potions were poison; anyone who rushed in would inevitably come into contact with them…

"Connor, what are you doing here?" Varga, gripping her rune-inlaid short sword tightly, asked Connor with surprise as he suddenly appeared.

"Don't talk about that now, Varga, you need to take your grandmother and leave quickly. The people from the Spirit Worship Cult are on their way here and will be here soon. By the way, where is your grandmother?" Connor asked hurriedly with a serious expression.

"My grandmother?" A look of grief appeared on Varga's small face, and her beautiful eyes welled up with tears.

"Is this young master Connor? Please come into the inner room!" Just as Connor looked at Varga, whose eyes were brimming with tears, and a sense of foreboding rose in his heart, a sickly old woman's voice rang out from inside the simple room.

"Yes!" Connor's eyes narrowed, and he quickly went over. When he entered the inner room, he saw a dilapidated bed, and his grandmother Mary, pale as paper, was lying on it, barely alive.

Upon seeing Connor enter, the frail old woman lying on the bed struggled to sit up from the dilapidated bed, but she was probably too weak to do so on her own.

"Grandma! You rest well, everything will be alright!" Wiping away her tears, Varga forced a smile and walked to Grandma Mary's bedside, helping her sit up.

"It's truly impolite of me to meet Master Connor in this situation!" Grandma Mary patted her granddaughter's little hand affectionately, then turned to Connor and said apologetically:

"Grandma Mary, you're exaggerating, but time is really running out. You've been discovered; the cultists are on their way!" Connor said solemnly, giving his grandmother, who lay on the bed, a deep look in his eyes. Deep down, he hoped that the old woman would make the "right" choice at this moment…

"Valga, you go out first. I need to speak with Master Connor alone for a few minutes!" Grandma Mary smiled at Connor and said to Valga.

"Grandma... if you're going, we'll go together!" At that moment, Varga seemed to understand what Grandma Mary wanted to talk to Connor about and cried out in a low voice, crystal tears streaming down her pretty face and falling to the ground.

"My dear child, do you think Grandma can leave us like this?" Reaching out her thin arm, Grandma Mary gently wiped away the tears from Varga's face and said kindly:

"If we can't escape, then we'll fight them to the death..." Varga clenched her fists and said bitterly.

Smiling and shaking her head, Grandma Mary turned her gaze back to the silent Connor and said, "Young Master Connor, since you're here, it seems you already know about our affairs, don't you?"

"I know a little bit!" Connor nodded. He was now hesitating whether to ambush Varga, knock the silly girl unconscious, and then forcibly take her away. Otherwise, judging from the situation, Varga would never choose to abandon her grandmother and survive alone!

"Snapped!"

Just as Connor made up his mind to deliver a mental shock to Varga and knock her unconscious, a sudden gust of wind blew, and the next second Varga collapsed limply to the ground.

Connor looked at Mary's grandmother, who was making the move, with some surprise. The old woman's face was flushed an unnatural red. She smiled and handed Connor a bottle of medicine. "This is the antidote. Once you're safe, give it to Varga, and she'll wake up on her own. Take Varga and go!"

Taking the antidote from the old woman, Connor hesitated for a moment before asking, "I'm honored that you trust me so much, but I don't know why..."

"Young man, I have no other choice. I'd rather believe you than those cultists and spirit worshippers!" the old woman said with a bitter smile.

Nodding, Connor carried the unconscious Varga on his back and solemnly promised the old woman, "I will do everything in my power to protect Varga!"

"May the Earth Goddess bless you!" Grandma Mary drew a prayer symbol of the Earth Goddess on her chest, blessing Connor.

"May the Earth Goddess you worship also bless you!" After saying this, Connor carried Varga on his back and left directly through the back door of the house.

Connor admired Mary's grandmother's courage. Faced with life and death, the old woman calmly chose the latter. The abnormal flush on her face clearly indicated that she had used some kind of secret method with severe side effects. Given the old woman's current physical condition, the consequences of using such a method were unimaginable.

Five minutes after Connor and Varga left, three men in black robes, looking hurried, arrived outside the room. They exchanged a glance, nodded to each other, and then darted into the room.

Two of the men in black robes searched back and forth in the house, while a bald man in black, who was the leader, appeared directly in front of the old woman's sickbed!

"God says, 'Ask and it will be given to you; seek and you will find; knock and the door will be opened to you; for everyone who asks receives...'" Seemingly unaware of the old woman beside her sickbed, Grandma Mary softly recited the scriptures.

"Old Mary, hand over Varga and the potion formula you have, and I might spare your life!" Seeing his two henchmen search the small house but find nothing, shaking their heads in disbelief, the bald, black-clad leader spoke to the old woman in a low voice:

Hearing the words of the leader of the men in black, a mocking smile appeared on Mary's aged face.

The next second, the whole house exploded with a deafening roar!

"Boom! Boom! Boom!"

Connor, who was carrying Varga on his back and running for his life, turned around at the sound and saw the house burning fiercely behind him. He shook his head with admiration, then tightened his back around Varga and ran even faster. He knew very well that it was a grandmother's last protection for her granddaughter!
