Chapter 7 An Encounter
Standing at the bus stop on the street, Connor, wrapped in a trench coat, stood in the cold January wind of Loen City for a full twenty minutes before the clattering public carriage finally arrived and stopped in front of him.
"To Green University!" Connor handed the driver a fivepence note.
"We've stopped at the east gate of Green University," the kind-hearted driver said, taking the money.
"Understood!" Connor nodded and sat down in an empty seat in the carriage.
The carriage moved slowly forward, and after about fifteen minutes, it came to a stop at a new station. A young girl in a red dress was about to get on.
The girl's slightly wavy golden hair fell naturally down her back, and her delicate features were beautifully set on her fair face. The faint smile on her lips gave people a feeling as gentle as a spring breeze.
As he watched the girl board the bus, Connor's pupils instantly shrank to pinpoints, but he quickly regained his composure, stood up, and greeted her with a bright smile, saying gently, "Hi! Miss Rebecca, I never expected to see you here again!"
That's right! The incredibly beautiful young woman who appears at this moment is none other than Miss Rebecca, the illegitimate daughter of the wealthy businessman Fabinho, whom Connor considers a prime suspect in the curse that led to his death!
Hearing someone greet her, the beautiful Rebecca looked over. However, when she realized that the tall, handsome young man in her field of vision was Connor Ferguson, Rebecca's delicate body trembled slightly, her ruby-like eyes filled with disbelief, and her warm smile froze on her face.
"Is this what they call seeing a ghost?" Connor thought to himself with a slight self-mockery, but he still acted very gentlemanly, bowing slightly and extending his hand to invite Rebecca to sit in the empty seat next to him.
This Miss Rebecca didn't seem to be an ordinary beauty either. After a period of abnormal trembling, her body calmed down, and the disbelief in her eyes was instantly concealed. Her smile faded, and she seemed to become quite calm. She hesitated for a moment, but accepted Connor's invitation and sat down next to him.
"Miss Rebecca, do you know? After that wonderful night, your image has been constantly on my mind!" To avoid alerting her by expressing his past excitement at seeing his beloved, Connor suppressed the goosebumps all over his body and whispered what he considered the gentlest words:
After saying that, in order to make his performance even more convincing, Connor awkwardly extended his right hand and gently grasped the fair and delicate hand of the girl next to him.
"Snapped!"
As soon as Connor's right hand grasped hers, Rebecca instinctively and without hesitation pulled her small hand away from his large one.
"Mr. Ferguson, please have some self-respect!" Rebecca said coldly.
Sensing the chilling edge of the beautiful girl's words beside him, Connor, who was becoming increasingly theatrical, seemed stunned for a moment. Then, like a deflated balloon, he said in a low, dejected voice, "That night, you weren't like this..."
A flash of undisguised disdain and contempt crossed Rebecca's eyes. She ignored the nobleman she had deeply hurt and got up to sit on the other side of the carriage.
Half an hour later, the public carriage stopped at the stop at the east gate of Green University. Rebecca and Connor got off the carriage one after the other. However, compared to the calmness on Rebecca's face, Connor behind her looked like a defeated rooster, with his head bowed deeply, as if he had not yet recovered from the goddess's rejection.
Without even glancing at Connor, Rebecca, dressed in a red dress, smoothed her blonde hair and then walked towards the classical Gothic-style teaching building of Green University in her exquisite high heels.
"Da da da da!"
As he listened to the receding sound of Rebecca's high heels, Connor Ferguson slowly raised his head and looked at the red figure that was becoming somewhat blurry in his vision. A half-smile appeared on his handsome face.
When Rebecca saw herself in the carriage, Connor thought it was so obvious that all that was missing was the thought, "How is this person still alive?" on her fair and delicate face!
"I hope my performance will make her think that I only survived by sheer luck."
Connor was increasingly looking forward to the detective report about Rebecca that the renowned detective, Mr. Valverde, would give him in a few days. Unable to ascertain Rebecca's background, and wanting to strike first, he dared not act rashly.
"Put Rebecca's matter aside for now, and focus on Professor Reyes." With that in mind, Connor went to the commercial street of Green University, spent a few shillings to buy some delicious pastries, and then headed toward the villa where Professor Reyes was supposed to live.
Although the custom of giving gifts when visiting others has not yet formed in this world, Connor, who once lived in the Great Celestial Empire, still values interpersonal relationships quite a bit, and Professor Reyes, the person he is about to visit, is still very important to him.
Before even stepping through the gate of this quaint two-story villa with its walls covered in countless plants, Connor saw a middle-aged man in a white robe, with graying temples but a very tall and robust figure, diligently tending to the tulips in the garden in front of the villa.
Seemingly hearing Connor's footsteps, the tall, robust middle-aged man slowly raised his head. Upon seeing Connor, a smile appeared on his well-maintained face.
"Haven't seen you for a week, Connor!"
"Yes, Professor, the last time we met was last Wednesday!" Taking a deep breath, Connor respectfully bowed slightly to Professor Reyes to express his respect.
Following Professor Reyes into his villa, Connor, just like before, sat awkwardly on the sofa.
"Connor, why did you bring a gift today? That's not like you at all!" Professor Reyes glanced at the beautifully wrapped box of pastries Connor had placed on the table and said, seemingly somewhat surprised.
"I stumbled upon this pastry on the shopping street today and thought it tasted pretty good, so I wanted to buy some for you to try, teacher..." Connor scratched his head, a simple and honest smile appearing on his face.
Looking at Connor's sincere face, Professor Reyes nodded in satisfaction and smiled with pleasure, "It's rare to see such a thoughtful gesture!"
