Chapter 678, Section 675: Threat

Chapter 678, Chapter 675: Threat

Seeing this, Martina put the revolver she had been aiming at Steve's head back into her spatial ring. No longer having a revolver aimed at his head, Steve breathed a sigh of relief, got up from the ground, wiped the cold sweat from his forehead, and then very carefully hid the two five-pound notes in his cabinet.

Although forced to send this mysterious woman out to sea under threat to his life, the ten gold pounds this extremely dangerous woman pulled out still brought a sliver of comfort to the worried Steve amidst his fear. Ten gold pounds would normally be enough for him to save for a year, and now, as long as he sent this mysterious woman out to sea, he would make a profit. As long as he wasn't discovered by the sea monster, there was no doubt that he would make a fortune this time.

In a minute, Steve gathered all the necessary tools for the sea trip from his home, then, carrying a small leather bag, respectfully appeared before Martina and said, "I'm ready, we can go!"

Martina glanced at the small leather bag in Steve's hand, which smelled of fish, and saw that it contained only ordinary tools. Without saying anything more, she turned and walked out of the brick house, with Steve following closely behind her.

A few minutes later, Martina and Steve arrived at the beach, at the location of Steve's fishing boat. However, just as they boarded the boat and Steve was preparing to set sail, Martina seemed to sense something. She turned around and saw a handsome, dashing young man with black hair, wearing a long black robe, smiling at her not far away on the beach.

"Connor, I didn't expect you to actually track me down here. You're much more troublesome than I imagined!" Martina paused slightly as she looked at Connor, who had suddenly appeared on the beach and was smiling at her. Just as she was about to order Steve to steer her boat away, Martina's heart sank. She looked at Connor with a bitter expression and said softly, "I have no hope that the psychic wizard Connor will not recognize me because of my wide robes and thick veil."

Meeting Martina's bitter gaze, Connor's smile faded. He shook his head, looked at Martina on the fishing boat, and said meaningfully, "Martina, you've surprised me too, managing to escape from old Victor!"

As soon as Connor finished speaking, Steve, who was on his fishing boat ready to set sail, was looking back and forth between Martina and Connor, completely bewildered and not understanding what was happening. Suddenly, without warning, he collapsed onto the overturned boat, writhed in agony for a few moments, and then, in a bizarre twist, turned into a pile of ashes, dying on his own fishing boat…

Witnessing Steve's death, Martina closed her eyes in anguish. She wasn't grieving for Steve, who had died from Connor's mental attack. Steve was just a mortal; his death was insignificant. Martina wouldn't care if a thousand or ten thousand of such people died. But now, Martina was grieving for herself. Steve's death and Connor's sudden appearance meant her escape plan was completely ruined, and she might very well die here…

After closing her eyes for a few seconds, Martina, having processed the fact that Steve was dead and her life was in Connor's hands, reopened her eyes and looked deeply at Connor; "Connor, I think we can make a deal, a deal concerning your mentor, Professor Reyes of the Secret Society!"

Upon hearing Martina's words, Connor was startled, but his excellent composure and deep composure prevented any significant change in his expression. This disappointed Martina, who was gazing intently at Connor, hoping to glean something from his expression.

"Martina, aren't you curious how I knew you were here?" Although he was very curious about what information Martina knew about Reyes, in order to prevent Martina from using this information to blackmail him and demand a higher price, Connor pretended to be uninterested and changed the subject, asking instead:

Hearing Connor's counter-question, Martina, though somewhat unsure why he was beating around the bush, still managed a cold smile and said in a deep voice, "Connor Ferguson, I have to admit you're more skilled. I fell into your trap, and you managed to track me all the way here. It must be because of what you did to me that day when I was fighting your henchman, the one who used blood magic?"

Connor was slightly surprised by Martina's quick reaction in realizing he had placed a mental mark on her. After a moment's thought, Connor looked at Martina and asked in a deep voice, "Martina, I have a question for you. Why did you target me? Why did you join forces with Tusam to attack me, and why did you instruct Tusam to attack Varga?"

Why?

Martina looked dejected, softly repeating Connor's words, then looked up at him again and said, "My value to His Highness the Duke lies in my ability to provide him with what he desires. Therefore, the higher and faster I climb under your mentor Reyes's wing, the greater my value becomes, and the more cultivation resources His Highness can provide. If Old Victor dies, I have a high probability of succeeding him. So, Connor, do you understand what I mean?"

Although Martina didn't say it explicitly, Connor understood perfectly well what she meant. He sighed and nodded slightly, indicating that he understood.

Martina needed to continue infiltrating the professor's faction in order to obtain cultivation resources. Therefore, Martina and Margaret, who knew about her undercover identity, undoubtedly became uncontrollable potential threats in Martina's eyes, a time bomb that could blow her to pieces at any moment!

So, for safety's sake, Martina removed herself and Margaret, two thorns in her side. Varga, who was too close to her, naturally became one of Martina's targets as well.

Once Connor understood this, his doubts about why Martina, who could have been his collaborator, was causing him vanished completely. If he were in Martina's shoes, an undercover agent for the Duke's faction, he might have been even more ruthless than Martina for his own safety!
