Chapter 5 Detective Valverde

Chapter 5 Detective Valverde

Unlike the traditional knights of the West, the knights of this world are more like knights in a broader sense. Any warrior who has awakened their life force and whose physical abilities far surpass those of ordinary people can be called a knight.

"Nobility originates from knights," is an old proverb from the Kaman Empire, simply and directly describing the relationship between knights and traditional nobles. Therefore, hereditary noble families like the Fergusons typically possess treasured knightly breathing techniques.

Although knights are far less powerful than they were hundreds of years ago due to the impact of modern firearms, the knight's breathing technique is still a very special thing among nobles. Some conservative nobles even follow the custom of passing it down to sons but not daughters.

The reason George was so envious of him just now was largely because George's family was bankers. They only started to prosper from his grandfather's generation. Before his grandfather, they were commoners and did not have a breathing technique passed down through generations. The breathing techniques they bought at high prices were all ordinary. This resulted in George, who was the same age as him, only having the strength of a prospective knight.

Perhaps due to the perks of being a transmigrator, with the aid of the chip, Connor can now fully control his body's strength. According to the descriptions of knights' strength in his memory, a formal knight can basically take on ten normal adult men without using weapons.

"Number 37 Hunter Street? Is this the location of some famous detective agency in Loen City?" Looking at the two-story building with the words "Valverde Private Detective Agency" written on it, Connor, who had concealed himself tightly in a black robe, muttered to himself:

Looking around and finding no one on the street paying attention to him, Connor put on a mask and sunglasses, pulled his bowler hat down tightly to cover his face as much as possible, and pushed open the unlocked wooden door and went inside.

"Young man, you should knock politely before coming in!" Just as Connor stepped into the house, a strong voice rang out. In the room, decorated in a typical Carman style, an old man sat on the sofa facing the door, a pipe in his mouth. His brown eyes seemed to be a detective's habit as he carefully scrutinized the employer who had suddenly appeared before him.

After carefully suppressing his politeness and making sure his face wasn't completely exposed, Connor bowed slightly and said apologetically to the old man before him, "I'm sorry, please forgive my rudeness. Are you the famous detective, Mr. Valverde?"

"First of all, as the host of this room, I accept your apology. Secondly, if there isn't another Detective, Mr. Valverde, in this room, then I must be the person you're looking for!" The old man smacked his cigarette deeply, saying with a touch of humor:

Unfortunately, the preoccupied Connor completely missed his humor. Glancing around, Connor tentatively asked, "Mr. Valverde, shall we talk here?"

"I swear on my honor that this place you are in right now is absolutely private!" Detective Valverde glanced at Connor and said meaningfully.

Nodding, Connor took an envelope from his pocket, placed it on the wooden desk, and pushed it to Valverde.

"Rebecca, from the History Department at Ruen University, I need her updates for the next week—everything!"

Connor said solemnly, emphasizing the word "everything".

With great interest, Connor opened the envelope that he had been given and saw a portrait of Rebecca. Although Valverde didn't say anything, Connor noticed some subtle expressions on the old man's face. Valverde seemed to be surprised by Rebecca's beauty as well.

Valverde put the portrait back in the envelope, tapped his fingers on the table, and after a moment of thought, slowly said, "Investigating the whereabouts of Imperial citizens without the permission of the Imperial Police is a violation of Imperial law..."

"How much do you want?" Connor had no desire to listen to Valverde's nonsense. He decisively extended a hand, interrupting Valverde's speech, and said in a deep voice:

Looking at his decisive employer, Valverde's cloudy eyes flickered for a moment before he gave a number.

"Five gold pounds!"

"I'll give you ten gold pounds, but I expect you to do your job carefully and not give anything away. That woman is more than just beautiful!" Connor generously didn't haggle and even doubled the price Valverde was asking for. However, in his last words, Connor gave Valverde a hint.

Seeing Connor's generosity, Valverde's wrinkled face broke into a radiant smile, like a blooming chrysanthemum. He nodded slightly and said confidently, "I believe that in a week, sir, you will be absolutely satisfied with your current generosity!"

"I'm really looking forward to this!" Connor said softly, pulling a dark green five-pound note from his wallet. "This is the deposit; I'll pay the balance when I arrive in a week!"

"No problem!"

Leaving Valverde's private detective agency, Connor walked along the streets of Loen City. He looked up at the sun hanging high in the azure sky, but instead of feeling any warmth from the blazing sun, he felt as if he were surrounded by an ancient, unyielding ice, his body and soul both chilled to the bone.

The mastermind behind his curse to death loomed over Connor like a shadow, causing him constant unease and sleepless nights.

Taking a deep breath, Connor's eyes flashed with a crazed killing intent. He clenched his fists tightly and thought bitterly, "Whoever you are, since you want me dead, I'll send you to hell first!"

"Is there any way to improve my current self-defense capabilities?"

Lying on the soft bed, gazing at the exquisite murals on the ceiling, a somewhat dejected Connor asked the chip:

He could be cursed once, so he could be cursed a second time. The person who cursed him, discovering he wasn't dead, would surely take further action. Therefore, besides finding the person who cursed him, the most urgent task was to increase his own strength. Only when he was powerful enough would all schemes, tricks, and evil spirits appear pale and powerless.
