Chapter 35 Attending the Banquet

Chapter 35 Attending the Banquet

"So you're a knight! No wonder you caught me so easily!" After Uncle Sterling had walked away, the little girl called Lena whispered to Connor, her dark eyes filled with envy.

"Why did you become a thief? What about your family? You should know that if you get caught by the police, you'll get at least thirty lashes and be imprisoned for more than a year! Your small frame definitely can't withstand thirty lashes!" Connor just smiled at the little girl's envy, hesitated for a moment, and then said:

The little girl pouted and said, "My name is Danielle. Unlike you, I'm not a noble. My father used to be a factory worker, but he died of tuberculosis. My mother remarried, and I became an orphan. To eat, I had no choice but to steal!"

Although Lena spoke in a very relaxed manner, Connor could still sense the sorrow in her calm words.

"What's your name? I feel you're a good person. You caught me but didn't hand me over to the police, and even treated me to dinner. You're not like those noble gentlemen in stories who kidnap girls to warm their beds!" Lena's big eyes darted around as she asked curiously.

"I'm a good person?" Connor chuckled to himself. He wondered if this little girl in front of him would still say she was a good person if she knew she had taken two lives.

"My name is George!" A wicked grin spread across Connor's face as he mischievously impersonated his best friend. "Little Danielle, looks like you don't have a very good impression of nobles!"

"Of course! The pastor of the church said that nobles are the vampires of the empire. In order to maintain their extravagant lives, they squeeze every last penny from the common people. What's worse, they force young girls to warm their beds and do evil things to them..." As she finished speaking, Danielle hugged herself tightly with great seriousness, as if the noble gentleman in front of her was about to do something evil to a girl like her.

Somewhat embarrassed, Connor touched his nose and said, "I don't know why the church pastor would tell such young children this, but frankly, those nobles who want young girls to warm their beds would never want a little brat who isn't even ten years old!"

"Who's a little kid who's not even ten years old? I'm fourteen, okay!" Danielle retorted quickly when she heard someone slander her as not being even ten years old.

Looking at Danielle, who was barely 1.4 meters tall and had a flat figure like a boy, Connor felt a little incredulous. You know, the Kaman Empire is now similar to the European and American populations on Earth. The average height of men is around 1.8 meters and that of women is around 1.7 meters. A normal 14-year-old girl is at least 1.5 meters tall.

"Sir, your pork pies are ready, please enjoy!" Uncle Sterling placed a plate containing ten generously portioned, freshly baked, and still steaming hot pork pies on the table and said politely.

Smelling the aroma wafting from the pork pies, Connor felt that Danielle might not have been wrong; this Uncle Sterling might indeed be a chef from the Tottenham Hotel.

Seeing little Danielle staring longingly at the pie and drooling, Connor casually picked up a pie, then waved his hand, signaling Lena that she could start eating!

After a whirlwind of activity, looking at the clean plates on the table and then at little Danielle's slightly protruding belly, Connor was quite surprised. How could Danielle, with such a small frame, have eaten five pies just like him! Uncle Sterling was right, their pies were indeed very generous in portion.

Connor, a formal knight who needs to eat a lot every day to replenish his energy, felt quite full after eating five pies. As for little Danielle, if Connor hadn't stopped her from eating because he was afraid she would overeat and die, she might have been able to eat a seventh or even a eighth pie!

Connor glanced at little Danielle, who was lounging lazily in her chair with a contented look, shook his head, got up, walked to the counter, took out three shillings from his wallet, and handed them to the restaurant owner, Sterling.

"Sir, one shilling and five pence, that's not much!" Seeing Connor hand over so much money, the honest and simple Uncle Sterling seemed a little at a loss.

Connor, who had initially intended to offer a tip, changed his mind and said, "I'm very happy with Danielle for finding me a job at such a delicious pie shop. Consider the extra money as her wages and keep it here for her food. But remember, give her only one pie at a time!"

Upon hearing Connor's words, Uncle Sterling hesitated before accepting the three shillings, saying with emotion, "Sir, you are truly a good man!"

Connor smiled helplessly upon hearing this. This was the second time he had been friend-zoned today. He glanced at little Danielle, shook his head, and then walked out of the restaurant without any hesitation, heading towards his apartment.

He wasn't a saint. There were countless children like little Danielle, not to mention the entire Kaman Empire, even in the city of Rune. He, Connor Ferguson, couldn't save them all. He simply treated little Danielle to a good meal and ensured she wouldn't go hungry for the next few days. Connor believed he had done more than enough. If fate allowed, they would meet again someday; if not, so be it!

Sitting in a spacious, imposing luxury carriage, Connor Ferguson, dressed in formal attire, thoroughly enjoyed the enchanting scenery of the countryside outside Loen as the sun set.

Although George's father, Mr. Harvey Sanchez, owns a ten-acre mansion in the eastern part of Loen City, his birthday party was going to be too crowded in the city mansion, so Mr. Harvey decided to hold the party at his luxurious estate called "Evar" on the outskirts of Loen City, which covers fifty acres.

"Chip! Are you sure that after I used the Concealment spell, my wizard's aura is completely hidden and won't be detected?" Connor silently prayed to himself.

Mr. Harvey Sanchez has a wide circle of friends, including nobles, members of parliament, wealthy businessmen, and even the church. At his birthday party, it's hard to guarantee that no one will discover that he is a wizard. Given the church's powerful position, Connor does not want his secret of being a wizard to be known by others.

"Beep! According to the chip's calculations, after using advanced meditation techniques and the concealment spell recorded in the Abyss Secret Arts, the probability of the subject remaining undetected as a wizard is as high as 91%!"
