Chapter 166 Secret Contact
Chapter 166 Secret Contact
After the real estate agent left, the young man walked into the manor alone. Although the place was called a "manor", strictly speaking, it was just a large yard with a farm. It was nothing like the luxurious manors owned by nobles and wealthy merchants that covered hundreds of acres for vacation.
After looking around, the young man's face glowed with a watery light, and then the originally ordinary-looking young man revealed his true form.
"That's the third one!"
Connor was very satisfied with the surrounding environment; this was the third property he had acquired this week.
There's an old saying on Earth, "A cunning rabbit has three burrows," and Connor wholeheartedly agrees.
Having experienced what happened last time, Connor was deeply moved. When it really came down to it, he didn't even have a safe house of his own in Rune and could only rely on the secret society's safe house. This situation was very difficult for Connor to accept.
Connor had been busy treating his mental trauma, taking out a loan to buy an apartment, and breaking through his cultivation level, so he didn't have time to handle this matter. Now that he has paid off the remaining balance of the apartment and still has 1,500 gold pounds left in the bank loan, he is quite well-off. In addition, there is no news from Margaret, so he can only hold back for now and take advantage of the time to deal with this matter.
These three properties are all different in characteristics. Some are in the city center, some are in the slums, and the one in front of us is in the countryside. Connor made this choice out of a sense of security, fearing that if things really got to a critical moment, others could deduce the range of his other safe houses by observing the characteristics of one of them.
After conducting another inspection and setting up some simple mechanisms, Connor left and returned to his apartment at 16 Rand Street.
When Connor got home, he was pleasantly surprised to find an extra letter in his mailbox!
The letter was identical in both its packaging and contents. On the surface, it appeared to be a questionnaire from a restaurant called Spall to Connor, asking him if he was satisfied with their food and service and what his opinions were.
After carefully reading the questionnaire, Connor smiled with satisfaction. A week later, Margaret had finally found the information he wanted.
There's nothing wrong with the questionnaire itself. Even if you use the highest level of detection magic to test it, there won't be any problems. The real interesting thing isn't the questionnaire itself, but the content of the questionnaire.
These seemingly simple questions, like "Sir, which dish in our restaurant do you like best?", will reveal completely different content after being deciphered using a pre-arranged code. No matter how skilled you are, you won't be able to decipher the contents of the questionnaire without knowing this code.
This was the method of communication that Connor and Margaret had discussed after their last meeting at the apartment. It was to be careful and discreet, because things were different now. The bishop of the Church of Rune Storms had been replaced by Edel, the former captain of the Rune Arbitrators team. The new broom sweeps clean, and the search and arrest of unofficial wizards in the Rune region is very strict.
After straightening his clothes, Connor set off for the city library.
Upon arriving at the Loen City Library, Connor pretended to read some history books for a while before returning them to their original places and going to the library's front desk.
"Hello, my friend left something for me in a locker. Could you please get it for me?" Connor politely asked the receptionist, who was applying her makeup.
The libraries here are completely different from those on Earth. They are not free to the public. It costs ten pence per hour to read books and find information. In this world, a worker might only earn twenty or thirty pence a week. So, going to the library to read books is an absolute luxury!
"Did your friend tell you which locker he left his things in?" Upon hearing Connor's question, a hint of displeasure flashed in the eyes of the young female manager who was putting on makeup, but she still stopped applying makeup, stood up, and began to serve Connor.
"Lock number 077!" Unaffected by the manager's displeasure, Connor spoke calmly.
"I'll go check it for you!" Upon hearing Connor provide the locker number, the librarian immediately headed towards the library's safe room.
Watching the librarian's back as she worked, Connor couldn't help but admire Margaret's audacity. Didn't she know that librarians working at the city library usually had some connections to get there?
For example, the young lady who served Connor, Connor thought she was probably a rich girl who came out to find a job after being influenced by the Imperial feminist movement. Otherwise, with her salary, how could she afford such a high-end fashion outfit, and what kind of cosmetic bottles and jars?
Given their diligence, they might accidentally give something to someone else at any time.
About five minutes later, the administrator came out of the safe room with a briefcase, approached Connor, handed him the briefcase, and said, "Storage fee is ten pence, plus the money you spend reading here, totaling twenty pence!"
After rummaging through his wallet, Connor regretfully discovered that he had no change left; the smallest denomination of banknotes was one shilling. Shaking his head slightly, Connor took out a shilling banknote and handed it over.
"Keep the change, the extra money is on me for you to have some milk tea!" With that, Connor picked up his briefcase and turned to leave!
"Wait a moment!"
To Connor's surprise, before he had taken more than a few steps, the female administrator came up to him with eighty pence in change.
"Here's eighty pence. Count it carefully. Not all girls are interested in taking advantage of rich kids like you!" The very individualistic building manager tossed the eighty pence into Connor's hand, turned, and walked away, leaving Connor standing there bewildered in the wind...
"I..." Connor opened his mouth as if to say something, but he felt both angry and amused. Had he really become a spoiled brat?
After standing there stunned for a few seconds, Connor shrugged, put the penny back into his wallet, and left the library.
Although the situation was somewhat like that of a bickering couple in a soap opera, Connor had no interest in playing that game; his attention was now entirely focused on the information Margaret had left him.
However, after reading only the beginning, Connor couldn't help but frown...
