Chapter 3 Chen Bin: The sky has fallen!

At this moment, in the teachers' office, the setting sun slanted in through the window, falling on the desk and making the paper glow with a warm light.

Qin Zhengyan, a math teacher in his fifties, sat at his desk, put down his thermos, and the bottom of the thermos hit the table with a dull "clang".

Instead of preparing lessons, he bent down and pulled out the unfinished test papers from Class 2 of Senior Three from his drawer. He quickly flipped through the pages and found the one with the name "Lin Yan" printed on it.

With just one glance, Qin Zhengyan's brows furrowed and his face instantly darkened.

There were 8 multiple-choice questions, and I only guessed 2 correctly, getting 10 points. There were 4 multiple-answer questions, and I barely got half an option right on one of them, earning 2 points. I got all the fill-in-the-blank questions wrong. The problem-solving questions were even more ridiculous. I just wrote the beginnings of two questions randomly, and left the rest blank, without even completing the steps.

Lin Yan only scored 12 points on a test paper with a full score of 150!

What infuriated Qin Zhengyan the most was that one of the fill-in-the-blank questions was almost identical to the arithmetic sequence question he had discussed in class that day—it was just a different version of the same thing, yet Lin Yan still got it wrong!

The problem is that one of the fill-in-the-blank questions was very similar to the arithmetic sequence question we just discussed in class, but I still got it wrong.

"This kid clearly knows how to do it, but he deliberately wrote something wrong. His attitude is just not right!" Qin Zhengyan shook his head repeatedly in anger, pointing at the wrong questions on the test paper. He felt both angry and regretful.

Having such talent, yet choosing to waste it, isn't that a terrible waste?

He turned to look at Li Shuhua, the homeroom teacher of Class 2, Grade 12, who was grading papers at the next table, and asked with a hint of helplessness and confusion, "Ms. Li, what exactly happened to Lin Yan in your class?"

Wearing black-rimmed glasses and in her early thirties, Li Shuhua looked up, adjusted her glasses, and asked with a knowing look, "What's wrong, Teacher Qin? Did he make you angry?"

"I'm not angry, just a pity." Qin Zhengyan pushed Lin Yan's test paper over. "This child clearly has some mathematical talent. He solved two arithmetic sequence problems in class today in half a minute, and his method was even simpler than mine. But look at his test paper, he did terribly. He was obviously just being perfunctory. His attitude towards learning is seriously problematic."

Li Shuhua picked up the test paper, glanced at it, and sighed softly: "He transferred here at the end of last semester. Speaking of which, he got into our Xincheng No.1 Middle School with solid grades in the high school entrance exam, so he definitely has a good foundation."

"But then I was scouted by a talent agency, dropped out of school to pursue a career in the entertainment industry, and somehow things went wrong. I ended up slinking back to school. No matter how good my foundation was, after wasting almost two years, how could I possibly keep up with the pace of senior year?"

Xincheng No.1 Middle School is a top key high school in the city. Every year, its entrance examination scores are frighteningly high. No one who can be admitted through the proper examination is mediocre.

Qin Zhengyan was taken aback for a moment, then suddenly realized: "Oh, I see... How were his grades in the other subjects?"

"Don't even mention it." Li Shuhua waved her hand, her tone helpless. "I barely passed Chinese, but English, physics, and chemistry were all at the bottom, just like math, a complete mess."

"Oh, I see..." Qin Zhengyan nodded thoughtfully, his anger subsiding considerably, but replaced by a sense of anticipation. "Okay, I understand."

"Teacher Qin, I'll have a talk with him later and give him a good talking-to so he can correct his attitude towards learning. Please don't take it to heart," Li Shuhua said with a smile.

Qin Zhengyan picked up his thermos, took a sip of tea, and waved his hand, "No need, no need. I've been teaching for so many years, I've seen all kinds of students, I'm used to it."

Despite saying that, he secretly made up his mind to find another test paper to test Lin Yan next time, to see how much strength Lin Yan was hiding, whether his attitude was really bad, or whether he was deliberately pretending to be weak to deceive others.

Meanwhile, in the classroom of Class 2, Grade 12, with ten minutes left before the end of the last class, Lin Yan had already buried himself in his Grade 12 math textbook and hadn't noticed that the end of get out of class was approaching.

Since acquiring the [Mathematical Factor (Beginner)] talent, it's as if he's unlocked his full potential. The mathematical definitions, formulas, and theorems that used to be obscure and difficult to understand, and gave him a headache just by looking at them, have now become easy to understand. It's as if he's been given a cheat code.

Okay, it is indeed open.

It's easy to understand at a glance, easy to learn, and easy to apply to other situations without any effort.

The mathematical symbols and formulas that were previously a jumbled mess in his mind, like a ball of yarn, now stood neatly and orderly, like well-trained soldiers, waiting for his command and inspection.

If we compare high school mathematics to a bridge, the main structure of this bridge is almost complete. Just a few more steps are needed before it is fully completed and open to traffic.

Even more outrageous is that after studying math for an entire afternoon, Lin Yan not only felt no fatigue, but was also full of energy and became more and more excited as he studied.

Wow, math can be so addictive!

Whenever I fully understand a new formula, my brain releases dopamine like crazy. The sense of accomplishment and pleasure hits the cerebral cortex directly, which is incredibly satisfying.

I love math so much!

The bell rang, and the teacher, as usual, went overtime for a few more minutes before reluctantly announcing the end of get out of class, finally bringing the day's lessons to a complete close.

Today is Friday, and the next two days are the weekend, so there are no classes.

The time in the senior year of high school is particularly tight. Many students did not immediately pack their bags and go home, but stayed in the classroom to study. Some buried themselves in doing practice problems, while others discussed knowledge points in hushed tones. The whole classroom was filled with a strong learning atmosphere.

Of course, this is only for good students.

For academically challenged students, self-study? Forget about it.

Chen Bin, carrying a backpack on his shoulder, strolled from the last row to Lin Yan's seat, patted his desk, and said, "Come on, Lin Yan."

Lin Yan didn't even look up, her gaze still fixed on her math textbook, and said in a flat tone, "Chen Bin, you can go back now. I want to study a little longer."

"What?!" Chen Bin's eyes widened instantly, his mouth gaping open wide enough to fit an egg, his face filled with disbelief. "Lin Yan, you're doomed! You haven't gotten addicted to reading, have you?!"

Lin Yan finally looked up. "What nonsense! I just happened to read half of this chapter. I should at least finish it. Or, could you wait ten minutes?"

"Alright."

Chen Bin returned to his seat, wondering why Lin Yan had started studying.

With nothing else to do, he saw Lin Yan studying mathematics with great interest, and a strange impulse welled up in his heart.

"How about I take a look at math too?"

He simply took out his math textbook and randomly flipped to a page.

Ten seconds later, Ah Bin scratched his head.

This must be a book written in the heavens.

"Lin Yan can understand it, but I can't. No, I have to learn it."

A minute later, Chen Bin slammed the textbook shut and threw it aside.

What's the point of studying math? There's nothing interesting about it. There's nothing as fun as using a mobile phone.

TiMi...

Chen Bin, who was dominating the game, was patted on the shoulder.

Lin Yan's voice came: "Let's go."

Chen Bin looked up from under his desk, a smug look on his face, and shoved his phone in front of Lin Yan. "Alright, alright. Li Bai's score is 10-1-9, aren't I awesome!"

"I won't look."

Chen Bin: ...

The two walked out of the school together and took the subway. Chen Bin kept looking at his phone the whole way.

Lin Yan focused all his attention on his system panel, and he discovered that the panel's attributes had changed!

[Logic]: 0.1 → 0.2

【数学】:LV0(29/1000)→ LV0(197/1000)

"Damn, it's gone up so fast?" Lin Yan exclaimed inwardly, his eyes filled with surprise.

The math I learned in one afternoon was equivalent to the results of all my previous hard work; it was like I had a cheat code.

Okay, it's definitely open!

However, he soon discovered a problem: the system panel only showed four subjects—mathematics, physics, biology, and chemistry—while Chinese and English were nowhere to be found.

Lin Yan couldn't help but grumble to himself, "Is the system looking down on Chinese and English? Why isn't it even mentioned?"

But then he thought about it again and felt relieved.

Mathematics, physics, biology, and chemistry are the four pillars of natural science, a universally used scientific language with extremely high practical value.

Mathematics is the cornerstone of science, physics is the explorer of the laws of nature, chemistry is the creator of the material world, and biology is the decoder of the mysteries of life. These four disciplines each have their own focus, yet they are closely intertwined, together forming the core system of natural science.

These four are enough.

With points, the future is not a dream.

Lin Yan studied the system panel for a while regarding how to earn points.

There are two ways to earn points.

One way is through learning. The duration and efficiency of learning affect how many points you get. Under normal efficiency, you can get about 200 points per hour.

I spent the afternoon working on math and gained over 600 points, so now I have 758 points. It won't be long before I can do another draw.

Another source is fans; you can earn 10 points for each new fan you gain.

System tasks are beyond Lin Yan's control, but fans are something he can actively pursue and cultivate.

After all, he had debuted before. Although his public image collapsed, with proper planning and execution, he could rebuild his popularity and gain a steady stream of points.

After getting off the subway, the two walked to the entrance of the residential area.

Chen Bin patted Lin Yan on the shoulder and said excitedly, "Lin Yan, let's go to the internet cafe this weekend! I heard there's a new game out, an open-world adventure role-playing game. It's really fun, lots of people are playing it. Let's go and try it out together."

Originally, senior high school students were supposed to have extra classes on weekends, but after someone reported them to higher authorities, it was temporarily suspended.

Lin Yan shook her head: "No, I want to use this weekend to review and reinforce my math."

"What?!" Chen Bin stopped abruptly, as if struck by lightning, his eyes wide with shock. "Lin Yan, you've really gotten hooked on studying?! Don't scare me! We're comrades on the same side, you can't betray me!"

Lin Yan smiled helplessly and explained, "Chen Bin, I just feel that I've fallen too far behind in my high school courses, and I want to catch up now. You know, my parents hope I can get into a good arts school. I've arrived, I'll be going now, see you Monday."

Watching Lin Yan leave, Chen Bin felt as if the sky had fallen.

My best friend, with whom I played games, frequented internet cafes, and was a slacker in school, suddenly betrayed our friendship and started studying hard. What am I going to do?

Is there any trust left between people?

Lin Yandu has started studying seriously, so what should I do? Should I also study hard and try to get into university, or will I be forced to inherit the family's chain of supermarkets?

It's such a difficult choice!
