Witch Training Manual: My Water Magic Is Wrong
Chapter 59 The Bet
Emma was waiting for Wayne's answer, her hands resting on the edge of the table, her chin on the back of her hands, her eyes fixed on him.
Wayne put down his milk glass.
"Where exactly is it different?" he said.
"I need to think about it carefully."
Emma blinked.
"Have you been thinking about it for a long time?"
"It won't be long."
"oh."
Emma nodded, accepting the answer. She sat up straight, picked up her bread and continued eating, taking a couple of bites before looking up again.
"Then you should tell me when you've thought it through, Master."
"it is good."
On the other side, Ella sat next to Wayne, secretly glancing at him before quickly lowering her head, her ears turning slightly red.
There was a moment of silence.
Wayne took the initiative to strike up a conversation with the shy Ella.
"Ella, where's Wendy?"
Ella looked up.
"Master, Wendy went to get some medicinal herbs with her grandfather."
"Get the medicinal herbs?"
Ella nodded.
"Yes. Old Hunter said that Wendy's illness has improved a lot, thanks to the master's medical skills. He still has some medicinal herbs that he collected before, and he wants to give them to the master, saying that they are not worth much money, but it's better than letting them rot at home."
She paused, then added.
He also said that he had collected these medicinal herbs in the mountains for many years, and some of them were very old and could not be bought on the market. In the past, no one was willing to treat Wendy's illness, so there was no use for him to keep those medicinal herbs. Now that Wendy's illness is almost cured, he wants to give the best of them to his master.
Wayne didn't say anything.
Vera peeked out from the stove.
"Sir, old Hunter left in high spirits, his steps were even lighter than usual. He said he would send over a piece of cured pork he made himself another day, saying he made it last winter and couldn't bear to eat it."
Wayne nodded.
Everyone quickly finished their lunch.
Vera put the last bowl into the cupboard, wiped her hands on her apron, and came over.
"Sir, there's nothing much to do this afternoon. Would you like to take a break? I've been busy at the mayor's house all morning."
Wayne stood up.
"I'm not resting anymore. I need to give Wendy one last treatment when she comes back this afternoon."
Vera was taken aback.
"The last time?"
"Hmm," Wayne said. "After she finishes that medicine today and we do another massage, the elements in her body will be able to circulate completely."
Vera's eyes lit up.
"So Wendy will be able to live a normal life from now on?"
"able."
Vera clasped her hands together in front of her chest, her lips moved slightly, as if she were saying something in her mind.
Emma, who was listening nearby, suddenly interjected, "That's wonderful! Grandpa Hunter will be overjoyed to hear that."
"Master, after Wendy took the medicine today, will she be able to use magic like us?"
Wayne glanced at her.
"Not necessarily. Her magic has been suppressed for too many years, and even if it recovers, it will take time to adapt."
"Oh." Emma nodded.
"Could she also become a witch?"
There was a moment of silence in the kitchen after he said that.
Ella tugged at her sister's sleeve and whispered:
"Emma, don't ask such questions."
"I wasn't asking randomly," Emma said matter-of-factly. "I was just curious. Didn't Master say that we should ask questions if we had any?"
Looking at Emma's matter-of-fact face, Wayne suddenly felt like laughing: "She always was."
Emma's eyes widened.
"That's how it is?"
"Yes. She hasn't awakened because the magical elements within her body are blocked. Once those are cleared, she'll be able to use it naturally."
Emma opened her mouth, then stared blankly for a long while.
"So... so Wendy is like me and my sister?"
"It's different," Wayne said.
"Her attributes are different from yours and Ella's."
"What attribute?"
"Wait for her to tell you herself."
Emma pouted.
"Master, you're keeping me in suspense again."
Wayne didn't reply and turned to walk towards the door.
"I'll go prepare the medicine. When Wendy gets back, just have her come to the backyard to find me."
"Yes, sir," Vera replied.
Emma watched Wayne's figure disappear into the porch, then turned to look at Ella.
"Sister, guess what Wendy's element is?"
Ella shook her head.
"have no idea."
"I guess it's the wind," Emma said. "You see how softly she walks and speaks, like the wind."
"...You can even guess that?"
"Why not?" Emma said matter-of-factly.
"Then, sister, guess what it is?"
Ella thought for a moment.
"From the soil?"
Why?
"Because she's very quiet," Ella said.
"The soil is also very quiet."
Emma tilted her head and thought about it, and it seemed to make sense.
"Shall we make a bet?"
"No gambling."
Why?
Ella paused.
"There's no point in gambling."
"How is it meaningless? If you win the bet, you can get a kiss!"
Ella's face flushed red.
"Kiss, kiss what...?"
"Give Master a kiss," Emma said matter-of-factly. "If I win, I'll kiss Master. If you win, you'll kiss Master. That way, no matter who wins, we'll both benefit."
Ella opened her mouth, unable to speak for a long time. Vera, listening from behind the stove, shook her head, but couldn't suppress the urge to smile.
These two little girls.
She turned to clean the stove, ignoring the whispering twins.
Emma chuckled.
She showed her two little tiger teeth.
"If we both lose, we'll kiss each other."
Ella's face flushed instantly, burning from her cheeks all the way to her ears. She opened her mouth, wanting to say something, but her mind was a jumbled mess, and she couldn't form a single word.
"You, you..."
"What's wrong with me?" Emma tilted her head, looking completely innocent. "Anyway, we're the ones who make the money."
Ella's face was flushed red all the way to the roots of her neck.
"Really...we'll kiss together?"
"Yes, that's right." Emma nodded confidently. "We're making money anyway, so what are you afraid of, sister?"
"I'm not afraid!" Ella's voice rose half an octave, then quickly fell back down. "I mean... this isn't right..."
"What's wrong with it?"
Ella couldn't say it.
After all, that's always been her personality.
Emma leaned closer and tilted her head to look at her.
"Sister, don't you want to kiss your master?"
"I...I didn't..."
"You're blushing."
"That's because...because the kitchen is too hot!"
Emma turned around and looked at the stove.
Vera had already extinguished the fire; only a few embers remained in the stove, and no smoke was rising from it.
"It's not hot," she said, turning back.
Emma smiled.
"That's what you're thinking."
Ella opened her mouth, then turned her face away.
"I'll go see if Wendy's back yet." With that, she turned and ran, her steps light and quick, the straps of her apron swaying behind her waist.
In the backyard, Wayne poured the herbs into a mortar and pestle and slowly ground them. The brown powder spread at the bottom of the mortar, mixed with a few dried leaf veins, emitting a bitter medicinal aroma.
Vera was carrying a laundry tub out of the room and was about to walk towards the sink in the backyard when Wayne called her back.
"By the way, Vera," Wayne continued, drawing circles in the bowl, "Where's Lillian? I haven't seen her today."
Vera stopped and turned around.
"Miss Lillian," she said, placing the plate she was carrying on the wooden shelf by the courtyard wall, "she went out early this morning after breakfast, saying she was going to see some friends."
"Friends?" Wayne looked up.
"Yes, that's what she said."
"I see... You can go ahead and get busy!"
Vera nodded and carried the clothes toward the sink.
Wayne lowered his head and began grinding the medicine in thought.
Lillian's friends are most likely the witches from the mountain. Since arriving in Frost Town, Lillian has been going up the mountain from time to time. He has never questioned it. Although the witch cult is wary of him, they haven't completely broken ties. Besides, Lillian is one of their people, so it's normal for her to go back and visit them.
