Witch Training Manual: My Water Magic Is Wrong
Chapter 36 The Missing Emily
As dusk deepened, Wayne returned to the agreed meeting point.
Several girls were already there.
Ella and Emma, carrying their newly bought clothes and beaming with smiles, jogged over to Wayne as soon as they saw him. Lillian and Vera, however, stood rooted to the spot, their expressions less than pleasant.
"What's wrong?"
Lillian walked over and bit her lip.
"That... little girl with purple eyes."
Wayne looked at her.
"They ran away?"
Lillian said, "Yes, the person is missing."
Vera nodded beside her and whispered:
"I...I looked too, but I couldn't find it..."
Ella took a step forward, her head bowed.
"Master, when we were out shopping just now, she said she was going to take a look over there and told us to wait. And then... and then she never came back."
Emma chimed in from the side, her little face scrunched up.
"We searched for ages, we looked everywhere, but we just couldn't find it."
Vera, holding the basket, added in a low voice:
"People at the market said they saw her running down the mountain alone."
Wayne didn't say anything.
Ella looked up, her eyes filled with frustration.
"Master, have we been scammed?"
Wayne looked at her.
"Perhaps she has something she can't say about it."
Emma stomped her foot beside her.
"My master is so kind-hearted; he's clearly been deceived but he still speaks up for her."
Wayne didn't respond to that.
"Let's go back."
The group walked back.
After descending the mountain and crossing several streets, the dilapidated outline of the church appeared in the twilight. A man stood at the entrance, wearing that old robe; it was Thomason.
He leaned against the doorframe and, seeing Wayne and the others return, lazily straightened up.
"Your Excellency, how was your sightseeing?"
Wayne looked at him.
"What's up?"
Thomason shook his head.
"It's nothing. I just wanted to let you know that I've made dinner; it's in the kitchen. It's not as good as your daughter's cooking, but it'll still be edible."
He paused, his gaze sweeping across the faces of the girls before settling on Wayne.
"Also, I tidied up those rooms in the backyard this afternoon. I replaced the bed frames that needed replacing and blocked up the drafty parts of the windows. It will be more comfortable for you to stay there now."
Wayne looked at him.
The panel then pops up.
Name: Thomason
[Current Status: Taking the Initiative to Show Goodwill]
[Note: He originally just wanted to coast along, waiting for you to die like the previous bishops so he could continue collecting his salary. But when you went out that afternoon, he had nothing to do, so he went for a stroll in the backyard and noticed that the girls had kept the church spotless. He suddenly realized that this new bishop might be different.]
[Additionally: He tested the kitchen stove, found it worked, and then casually made dinner. Not to curry favor, he just figured... he had nothing better to do anyway.]
Wayne looked away.
"This is troublesome."
Thomason waved his hand.
"No trouble at all. The food is in the kitchen; you can get it yourselves."
Wayne took two silver coins out of his purse and handed them over.
"Take it."
Thomason paused for a moment, looked down at the two silver coins, and then looked up at Wayne.
"Your Excellency, this is...?"
"Today's wages," Wayne said. "The doorman is also a church employee; he should get paid for his work."
Thomason opened his mouth, but no words came out.
He had worked as a doorman at the church for three years, receiving a considerable amount of money from previous bishops. However, that money was all paid by the town mayor as "hardship pay" for keeping an eye on the church. No one ever treated him as one of the church's employees, and no one ever paid him "wages."
"My lord... I just did it on a whim..."
"Here, this is a reward from the goddess."
Wayne pushed open the church door and walked into the main hall.
The benches were arranged neatly, and the icon on the pulpit was cleaned, with the missing hand covered by a cloth.
Mayfair was standing beside the podium, organizing the scriptures. Hearing footsteps, she looked up and her gaze fell on Wayne.
"You're back?"
Wayne nodded.
"What about the other children?"
"I went to put something in the backyard."
Mayfair hummed in agreement and continued to organize the scriptures.
Wayne walked over and stood next to her.
Sister Mayfair.
Mayfair looked up.
"What's wrong?"
Wayne took out the old book and handed it to her.
"Here, take this."
Mayfair reached out and took it, opening the cover and her gaze falling on the text on the title page.
"The Holy Scripture of Exorcism..."
Her voice was very soft.
Wayne said, "I found this at a flea market; it's over a hundred years old. The information on it might be useful to you."
Mayfair looked up at him.
Wayne continued, "Necromancers favored by the gods need to collect different undead to enhance their power. This holy book contains some records of exorcism and subjugation, which may help you subjugate more powerful undead."
Mayfair was silent for a few seconds.
She closed the Bible and held it in her arms.
"Thanks."
Wayne nodded.
"And one more thing," he said, "those girls went to the market and bought you some clothes too. You can go check them out when you have time later."
Mayfair paused for a moment.
"……Give me?"
Wayne looked at her.
"Yes. They said it's cold and you're dressed too lightly."
Mayfair lowered her head, her gaze falling on the sacred book. The book in her arms was quite heavy, pressing against her chest.
"Thank you," she said again.
Frost Town, on the mountain.
The Witch Cult's stronghold is hidden in an old residential area near the mountaintop. From the outside, it looks like an old house that has been used for many years, but if you push open the inconspicuous wooden door in the backyard, you'll find a completely different world inside.
Emily sat in a chair, legs crossed, holding a cup of hot tea. The grime on her face had long been washed off, and she had changed out of her tattered clothes into clean casual wear.
There were five people sitting inside.
They were all beautiful women.
"How's Emily?"
Emily drank the tea in one gulp.
"That bishop is a normal person."
The room fell silent for a moment.
"A normal person?" The other woman with gray eyes frowned. "What do you mean?"
Emily leaned back in her chair.
"What I mean is, he's not the pervert we thought he was."
She recounted what had happened that day.
From the moment she was caught stealing bread, to Wayne's appearance, to Old Tom's sudden change of attitude and escape, to Wayne giving her money to buy clothes.
"...When he gave me two Viking Shields, I almost thought I misheard," Emily said.
"You'd take money just because someone offers it to you?" the gray-eyed woman glared at her. "What if this is bribery?"
"Bribed what?" Emily looked at her. "I didn't reveal my identity. In his eyes, I'm just a homeless kid who steals bread. He gave me money to buy clothes, is that bribery?"
The gray-eyed woman opened her mouth, but no words came out.
A woman in a cloak speaking came from the corner.
"Did you see those three witches with him?"
Emily nodded.
"I see them. Two small ones and one big one."
"How are you feeling?"
Emily thought for a moment.
"The two smaller ones are probably twins, one ice-type and one fire-type, and they just awakened their powers recently. The older one is a second-tier fire-type; he looks a bit silly, but he's quite strong."
She paused, then continued, "Their condition... is normal."
"normal?"
“Yes,” Emily said, “It couldn’t be more normal. She laughs, she jokes, she tries to speak up. Even the ice-cold one gets shy, her face turning bright red when her sister teases her. She doesn’t seem forced at all.”
Emily continued to ask.
"Big sister, what should we do?"
The oldest woman remained silent for a long time.
"Let's see," she said. "Let's observe for a while longer."
The woman in the corner, wearing a cloak, suddenly spoke.
"Big sister, I want to go and see for myself."
"OK……"
