Witch Training Manual: My Water Magic Is Wrong
Chapter 17 The Crowd of Regret
Two carriages drove out of the city gate one after the other, their wheels rolling over the dirt road and raising a light dust.
The carriage was very quiet.
Ella and Emma squeezed into the innermost seats, their dark eyes fixed on the person opposite them. Mayfair sat in the corner of the carriage, leaning against the wall, his gaze fixed on the two girls.
He didn't say anything.
Emma couldn't hold back any longer.
She leaned close to her sister's ear and whispered.
"Sister, she's been watching us."
Ella didn't speak, her eyes also wary.
Mayfair's gaze was calm.
She had been observing the two children since she got on the bus.
Her hair was black, though the color had faded a bit, but the natural blackness was still there. Her eyes were black, and the unusual luster deep within her pupils was imperceptible to most people, but it was noticeable to her.
Those who are favored by the gods and are vengeful are most sensitive to anomalies.
witch.
Both.
Moreover, it was only recently awakened.
Mayfair's gaze lingered on the two girls' faces for a moment before shifting to the pile of bedding at the other end of the carriage. Beneath the red cloak, a head of messy red hair peeked out.
The one still sleeping is also a witch.
Second order.
She was in the same rank as him.
Mayfair lowered her eyes.
Three witches.
A priest.
Go to Frost Town.
Father Wayne...
She had met many clergy members: cardinals from the holy city, inspectors from the cathedral district, and ordinary priests from border towns. Those people, upon seeing the witch, either shouted for her to be killed or avoided her at all costs.
But this person.
He not only took in two newly awakened little witches, but also brought along a wanted second-tier witch.
He is very brave.
However... she and Wayne should be on the same path.
Because her situation wasn't much better.
As a necromancer chosen by the gods, she was no different from a witch in the eyes of the church. If she weren't still a nun, she would probably have been hunted down and killed long ago.
Just then, the pile of bedding stirred.
Beneath the red cloak, a messy red head peeked out. Lillian opened her eyes and looked around blankly.
"Well……"
She rubbed her eyes, sat up, and her cloak slipped down. She looked at Ella and Emma on her left, then at Mayfair on her right, and finally her gaze settled on the person opposite her.
"what?"
Lillian blinked.
"Father Wayne? What are you doing here?"
Wayne looked at her.
"We set off a long time ago."
Lillian paused for a moment.
"Did they set off a long time ago?"
"right."
"So...where are we now?"
"We're ten miles outside the city."
Lillian opened her mouth, looked down at her cloak, and then looked around at her surroundings, as if she had just realized what had happened.
"So... I slept the whole way?"
Wayne didn't say anything.
Emma muttered to herself from the side.
"Sleeping like a little pig."
Lillian turned to look at her.
"What did you say?"
Emma shrank back behind her sister.
"It's nothing."
Wayne raised his hand, signaling them to be quiet.
"Now that you're both awake," he said, "it's a good opportunity to get to know each other."
Lillian blinked, and Ella and Emma looked at him at the same time.
Wayne looked at Mayfair first.
"This is Sister Mayfair. A second-tier necromancer favored by the gods. She's coming with us to Frost Town."
The carriage was silent for a moment.
Ella and Emma exchanged a glance.
Emma asked softly, "Necromantic... what is that?"
Wayne didn't explain, he just looked at Mayfair.
Mayfair looked up and glanced at the three girls.
"Necromantic," she said calmly, "the kind that can talk to the dead."
Emma paused for a moment.
"Talking to a dead man?"
Mayfair nodded.
"right."
Emma thought about it.
"Then... will the dead answer?"
Mayfair looked at her.
There was no fear in those eyes, only curiosity.
"Yes," she said.
Emma's eyes lit up.
"That's amazing!"
Mayfair paused for a moment.
She had seen many people react to her identity, mostly with fear and disgust. She had never seen anyone look at her with such wide eyes and say "Wow, that's amazing."
Wayne turned to Lillian.
"This is Lillian."
Lillian waved to the two girls.
"Hi!"
Ella and Emma were both looking at her.
Emma peeked out from behind her sister, her dark eyes sparkling as she looked at Lillian.
"My name is Emma!"
She pointed to Ella beside her.
"This is my sister, Ella."
Ella was pushed forward by her sister, her face slightly flushed, and her voice was much softer than her sister's.
"Hello..."
Lillian tilted her head to look at them, her brown eyes blinking.
"Are you sisters?"
Emma nodded.
"Yes, twins!"
Lillian looked at Emma, then at Ella.
"They do look somewhat alike... but not quite."
Emma grinned.
"Because I'm a fire-type, and my sister is an ice-type!"
Ella realized what was happening, and her expression changed slightly.
Emma realized she had said something wrong, opened her mouth as if to make amends, but didn't know how.
Lillian tilted her head.
"Fire? Ice?"
She blinked and looked at Emma.
"What do you mean?"
Emma opened her mouth.
Wayne spoke up.
"What she means is," he said, his voice slightly deliberate, "one is warm, the other is cold."
Ella nodded immediately.
"Yes, yes, my sister has always been like this since she was little. She loves to talk and has a fiery temper. I... I'm slower."
"I see." Lillian nodded.
She smiled, revealing her neat teeth.
"I knew it! How could there be fire and ice elements? They sound like witches from those stories."
Emma chuckled twice.
"Haha, yeah, there's no such thing..."
Lillian yawned and burrowed deeper into the blankets.
"Then I'll sleep a little longer..."
She closed her eyes and quickly fell asleep again.
Ella and Emma exchanged a glance and simultaneously breathed a sigh of relief.
Mayfair looked up and her gaze fell on Wayne.
Wayne looked at her.
Their eyes met.
Mayfair didn't say anything.
Wayne didn't say anything either.
A few breaths later, Mayfair looked away and gazed out the window again.
Wayne leaned against the carriage wall and closed his eyes.
The panel popped up.
Mayfair
[Current thought: The acting was terrible.]
[Note: She figured it out. The two girls were witches, recently awakened. The silly second-tier witch also believed the "passionate yet indifferent" explanation, but Mayfair didn't. She was just too lazy to say anything.]
[P.S. Her evaluation of you has changed. From "very bold" to "very bold, but your acting skills need improvement."]
Meanwhile, in the city of Audrien.
It was completely light.
A crowd began to gather in front of the stone steps at the church entrance.
The church doors opened.
A novice cultivator peeked out and was taken aback when he saw the group of people standing at the door.
"Everyone... what's this?"
Someone took two steps forward.
"Where is Father Wayne?"
The novice monk opened his mouth.
"Father Wayne... left before dawn this morning."
The crowd fell silent for a moment.
"Gone?" The woman's voice rose slightly. "Didn't you say you were leaving today?"
The novice monk shrank back.
"Yes, they left today... they just left early..."
"How early?"
They left before dawn.
An older woman suddenly spoke up.
"Tell me, what is the church after? Father Wayne has been here for three years and made this wretched place so much better. There are more believers, more donations, even family members who never go to church are coming to worship. And what's the result? Sending people to Frosttown to die."
"Who can argue with that..."
"If you ask me, this is like killing the golden hen that lays the most eggs."
The woman continued.
"Just you wait and see. If the one who takes over is like Father Wayne, I'll twist my head off. This church is going to be deserted from now on."
Someone in the crowd sighed.
"Let it be deserted, I'm not coming anyway."
"Me too."
"Me too."
