The next morning around nine o'clock, Chen Xun's phone rang.

He picked it up and saw that it was a WeChat message from Lin Xinyue.

"Big brother, I'll be home this afternoon, can you come pick me up?"

It was followed by a meme of a puppy wagging its tail.

Chen Xun replied, "What time? Send me the address."

"Around two o'clock, on that road in front of Linjia Village, you know that road, right?"

"Know."

"OKK, I'll be waiting for you!"

Chen Xun put down his phone and glanced at the living room.

Yang Xiaotao and Li Qian's doors were both closed, and there was still no movement.

The takeout we ordered last night was eaten in a rather quiet manner. Yang Xiaotao ate a few bites and then said she was full and went back to her room. Li Qian didn't eat much either.

Chen Xun finished eating and cleaned up by himself, and didn't see the two of them come out again all night.

The atmosphere is really a bit strange.

He shook his head and went to wash up and change his clothes.

I just cooked a bowl of noodles for lunch, ate it, and then drove off.

Linjia Village is located in the suburbs of Beixian County, more than 40 minutes away by car.

There was some traffic on the road, and Chen Xun arrived at the bus stop at 2:10 p.m.

Lin Xinyue stood under the bus stop sign, a small suitcase beside her, her red hair particularly eye-catching in the sunlight.

She was wearing denim shorts and a white T-shirt, and although she was a little tanned, she looked great.

Upon seeing Chen Xun's car, she immediately waved, her eyes crinkling with laughter.

Chen Xun parked the car in front of her and got out to help her put her luggage away.

"Big brother!" Lin Xinyue leaned closer. "Did you miss me?"

"Only two days." Chen Xun opened the car door.

"Two days is a long time!" Lin Xinyue got into the passenger seat, fastened her seatbelt, and asked, "Was Linghai fun?"

"good."

"Where are Xiaotao and Qianqian? Are they back?"

"I'm back, at the apartment."

"That's good." Lin Xinyue took out her phone and started scrolling. "Let me tell you, these past two days since I came home, my grandma has been nagging me every day to find a boyfriend and get married. I'm so tired of hearing it."

Chen Xun started the car: "So what did you say?"

"I told her I was doing something big with my older brother in Beixian, but she didn't believe me," Lin Xinyue said, pouting.

Chen Xun smiled but didn't reply.

As the car drove back to Beixian, Lin Xinyue kept talking about her family, how relatives were asking all sorts of questions, and how so-and-so in the village had gotten married.

Chen Xun listened and occasionally responded.

I arrived at the apartment building and parked the car.

Lin Xinyue carried her suitcase herself and went upstairs.

Chen Xun followed behind her.

I opened the door and went inside; no one was in the living room.

"Xiao Tao? Qianqian?" Lin Xinyue called out.

Yang Xiaotao's door opened a crack.

She peeked out, saw Lin Xinyue, and her eyes lit up: "Xinyue, you're back!"

"Did you miss me?" Lin Xinyue walked over and ruffled Yang Xiaotao's blond hair.

"I miss you!" Yang Xiaotao came out of her room and hugged Lin Xinyue. "Without you, there's no one to talk to me at home."

"Where's Li Qian?" Lin Xinyue asked.

"It's in her room," Yang Xiaotao said softly. "She came out this morning and went back in."

Just then, Li Qian's door opened.

She came out, saw Lin Xinyue, and nodded: "You're back."

"Hmm." Lin Xinyue looked her over. "What's wrong with you two? The atmosphere is weird."

"Nothing's wrong," Yang Xiaotao quickly replied.

Li Qian didn't say anything, and went to the kitchen to pour herself a glass of water.

Lin Xinyue looked at Yang Xiaotao, then at Li Qian, and finally at Chen Xun.

Chen Xun was changing his shoes, pretending not to see her gaze.

"Okay then." Lin Xinyue dragged the suitcase into her room. "I'll unpack first."

She closed the door.

Yang Xiaotao breathed a sigh of relief and slipped back to her room.

Li Qian stood at the kitchen doorway, holding a water glass, and glanced at Chen Xun.

Chen Xun felt that she seemed to want to say something, but in the end she just took a sip of water and went back to her room.

Chen Xun was left alone in the living room again.

He sat down on the sofa, turned on the TV, and randomly picked a program to watch.

About half an hour later, Lin Xinyue's room door opened.

She changed into her home clothes and sat down next to Chen Xun.

"Big brother."

"Um?"

"Is Linghai fun?" Lin Xinyue asked again, this time with a slightly different tone.

Chen Xun turned to look at her.

Lin Xinyue stared at the TV screen, but her eyes were clearly not looking at it.

"That's all," Chen Xun said. "Amusement park, aquarium, zoo."

"Oh." Lin Xinyue paused for a moment, "Why does Xiaotao seem... even more clingy to you?"

Chen Xun's heart skipped a beat.

"Is there?"

"Yes." Lin Xinyue turned to look at him. "The way she looked at you just now was different from before."

"Why is it different?"

"I can't quite put my finger on it," Lin Xinyue tilted her head, "It's just... she's become more dependent on you? Like you're her own brother."

Chen Xun did not respond.

The TV is playing GG, and it's a bit loud.

Lin Xinyue turned the volume down a bit.

"Nothing happened to you in Linghai, right?" she asked.

Chen Xun thought for a moment and said, "It's nothing serious."

"Really not?"

"No, really."

Lin Xinyue stared at him for a few seconds, then turned back to watch TV.

But Chen Xun could sense that she didn't believe him.

We ordered takeout for dinner, and the four of us sat down to eat together.

Yang Xiaotao was a bit more talkative than at noon, telling Lin Xinyue how scary the pirate ship and haunted house at Linghai Amusement Park were.

Li Qian ate quietly, occasionally interjecting with a word or two.

Lin Xinyue listened with great interest, occasionally asking for details.

"So you're staying at the same hotel?" she asked.

"Okay." Yang Xiaotao nodded. "I'll share a room with Sister Qianqian, and my older brother will have his own room."

"Oh." Lin Xinyue took a bite of rice. "And what about tonight? What did you guys do last night?"

Yang Xiaotao paused for a moment with her chopsticks.

"I'll just... go to sleep," she said.

Li Qian glanced at Yang Xiaotao.

Lin Xinyue also glanced at Yang Xiaotao.

Chen Xun kept his head down and ate, pretending not to hear.

After the meal, Yang Xiaotao took the initiative to clear the table, while Li Qian went to wash the dishes.

Lin Xinyue pulled Chen Xun to the balcony.

"Big brother, tell me the truth," she whispered, "What exactly happened?"

"Nothing's wrong."

"I don't believe it." Lin Xinyue stared at him. "Xiao Tao's behavior is obviously wrong, Qianqian's is wrong, and you're wrong too."

Chen Xun sighed.

"Well..." He thought for a moment and decided to tell part of it, "Xiao Tao went out to buy things alone last night and was ambushed by some thugs, so I went and brought her back."

Lin Xinyue's eyes widened: "When did this happen?"

"That night in Linghai."

"Is she injured?"

"No, I arrived in time."

Lin Xinyue breathed a sigh of relief, but immediately frowned again: "Then why didn't you tell me?"

"There's not much to say, it's all resolved."

"Does Qianqian know?"

"I don't know," Chen Xun said. "Xiao Tao didn't tell her, so don't tell her either."

Lin Xinyue remained silent for a few seconds.

"So, is that why Xiaotao relies on you more?" she asked.

"Maybe."

"What about Qianqian? Why is she acting strange too?"

Chen Xun shook his head: "I don't know."

Lin Xinyue stared at him, her gaze somewhat complicated.

"Big brother," she suddenly said, "you wouldn't...like Xiaotao, would you?"

Chen Xun was stunned for a moment.

"What are you saying?"

Lin Xinyue remained silent.

She turned around, leaned against the railing, and looked at the night view outside.

After a long pause, she finally spoke: "Anyway... don't make them sad."

"I won't."

"You promise?"

"I promise."

Lin Xinyue turned her head and looked at him.

Then she suddenly leaned over, hugged Chen Xun, and kissed him on the cheek.

Chen Xun froze.

"I missed you after two days." Lin Xinyue released him, her face slightly flushed, but she tried her best to appear nonchalant. "Is that a problem?"

Chen Xun looked at her, unsure of what to say.

Lin Xinyue turned and walked into the house.

"I'm going to take a shower!"

She slipped away very quickly.

Chen Xun stood on the balcony and touched the spot where he had been kissed.

My phone vibrated.

He took it out and saw it was a system notification.

Lin Xinyue's favorability rating: 85

Chen Xun looked at the line of numbers and sighed.

Life is getting more and more complicated.
