Finance Department, Yuexin Machine Tool Factory.
Yang Zhen put on gloves and pushed open the door. Zhang Yang followed behind, holding a notebook. The finance office was small, with the curtains drawn and the fluorescent lights casting a pale white light throughout the room. The door of the old-fashioned safe against the wall was open, the keyhole and surrounding area were pried open beyond recognition, the metal edges curled outwards, and a few pieces of iron filings and a bent screwdriver were scattered on the floor.
The technical investigation team was squatting next to the safe, brushing powder onto it. Yang Zhen walked over, squatted down, and shone a flashlight around the inside of the safe. The safe was empty, but there were some residues at the bottom that hadn't been cleaned properly.
Zhang Yang bent down and rubbed his finger into the grout between the floor tiles. A little grayish-black powder clung to his fingertip. He brought it close to his nose and smelled it; it had a pungent, gunpowder-like odor. Deep Blue spoke in his mind.
[Traces of suspected explosives were found. The powder is grayish-black with uneven particle size, initially identified as residue from ammonium nitrate industrial explosives, consistent with the characteristics of No. 2 rock emulsion explosives commonly used in quarries. The powder is concentrated at the bottom of the safe and in the gaps between the door hinges, indicating it was not brought in from the outside during handling but was spilled from items inside the safe. A significant amount of explosives was found inside the safe before it was pried open.]
Zhang Yang looked up at Yang Zhen: "Brother Yang, look."
Yang Zhen took his finger and smelled it, his expression instantly changing. He knew that smell all too well—ammonium nitrate, industrial explosives, the kind used in quarries and mines. He stood up, closed the safe door, and lowered his voice: "Explosives!! Where's the accountant?"
Ding Jian had already gone out and called the accountant over. The accountant was a woman in her early forties. She stood at the door, too afraid to go in, her legs trembling so much that her trouser legs were shaking.
Yang Zhen asked, "How much money did you lose here?"
The accountant rubbed his hands together and said, "Two hundred thousand, that's the salary I just received, everyone's waiting to be paid out."
Yang Zhen pointed to the safe: "What else is in your safe?"
The accountant's eyes darted away, and he opened his mouth but didn't say anything. Yang Zhen stared at him: "You have explosives in your safe?"
The accountant's Adam's apple bobbed twice before she managed to squeeze out, "Yes...it was left here by the factory manager's friend." She looked around as if grasping at a straw, "Where's your factory manager?"
Ding Jian didn't respond to his question, but instead asked, "Who was on duty last night?"
The accountant, head bowed, said, "It's Old Ding from the gate. He's already fainted from fright and been rushed to the hospital."
Judging from the appearance, there must have been a lot of explosives stored in the safe. The factory manager was quickly summoned and ran to the finance office, sweating profusely, with a large wet patch on the back of his shirt clinging to his body.
After Yang Zhen asked him a few questions, he confessed everything. He said the person who stored the explosives was named Luo Jianjun, and he also gave his home address.
Yang Zhen led Zhang Yang and Ding Jian straight to Luo Jianjun's residence. The car stopped at the entrance of the alley, and the three of them stood across the street and observed for a while. It was an old-fashioned self-built bungalow with its doors and windows tightly closed, the curtains drawn tight, and the yard quiet and still, without even a dog.
Yang Zhen asked the factory manager, "Is this the place?"
The factory manager nodded, sweating profusely.
Yang Zhen then asked, "Did that kid have a gun?"
The factory manager shook his head vigorously. Yang Zhen stared at him: "How do you know you don't?"
The factory manager swallowed hard and quickly corrected himself, "I meant... I don't know."
Ding Jian said, "Brother Yang, why don't I rush in first?"
Yang Zhen firmly refused: "No, what if that kid still has explosives? We can't make a move before we figure out the situation."
Ding Jian glanced anxiously at his watch: "Why haven't Lao Zheng and the others arrived yet?"
Zhang Yang said, "Brother Yang, the three of us should be able to control the situation, right? It would be even more troublesome if someone ran away."
……
Old Zheng and his men had just left the station. In the car, he said to Ji Jie, "Do you remember the case where 100 kilograms of explosives were stolen from the quarry?"
Ji Jie said, "I remember. Back then, the entire bureau was busy with that case for over a month, and we still haven't made any progress."
Old Zheng said, "Now this case has a chance. Yang Zhen, along with Ding Jian and Zhang Yang, has already rushed to the scene."
Upon hearing this, Ji Jie's expression changed: "Yang Zhen is rushing there with two men? That's too dangerous! Let's go quickly."
Outside Luo Jianjun's house, Zhang Yang listened intently for a while, but there was no sound at all; it was unusually quiet. He said, "Brother Yang, it seems like no one's inside; there's no noise."
Yang Zhen checked the time: "Old Zheng and the others should be arriving soon. The three of us will rush in in a bit. Zhang Yang, you'll guard the entrance, and Ding Jian will come with me into the inner room."
Ding Jian nodded.
The three men drew their guns, slowly chambering rounds. The clanging of metal was exceptionally clear in the quiet alley. Just as they were about to move, the door suddenly opened from the inside, and a man in his early thirties, wearing a vest and carrying a plastic bag, stepped out. Seeing the three armed men standing in the doorway, he was so startled that he dropped the plastic bag. Ding Jian lunged forward and pinned him to the ground. The man's face was pressed against the ground, his voice hoarse: "What are you doing?!"
There was no time to explain to him. Zhang Yang and Yang Zhen rushed into the house, searching every room, the living room, the kitchen, the bedroom. They searched everywhere, but there was no one there. Yang Zhen squatted down and lifted the bed board to look underneath, while Zhang Yang went to search the cardboard boxes in the corner. They were looking for explosives, not people. Explosives were the top priority.
As Zhang Yang bent down to check under the bed, he felt a chill on the back of his neck. Someone was there. He whirled around, gun in hand, and shouted, "Who goes there!"
When he pointed the gun at Zhang Yang, he realized it was Ji Jie and Lao Zheng, along with the SWAT team they had brought. A room full of heavily armed people stared at him in disbelief. Ji Jie's face was flushed from running, and her forehead was covered in sweat. She only let out a long sigh of relief when she saw Zhang Yang lower the gun.
The man pinned down by Ding Jian was named Luo Jianjun. A group of people dragged him back to the station for interrogation, while another group stayed behind to cordon off the scene.
In the interrogation room, Luo Jianjun sat on an iron chair, his wrists cuffed. He was covered in soot, but his tongue was still nimble. He confessed to the origin of the explosives: "I got those explosives from the quarry, a total of one hundred kilograms. I was planning to sell seventy kilograms tomorrow, but I was afraid someone would come and steal them, so I hid them in the safe in the finance office of the machine tool factory. Who would have thought they would be stolen?"
Yang Zhen asked, "Who do you want to sell the explosives to?"
Luo Jianjun said, "A group of friends from the underworld."
Ji Jie pressed further, "What about the remaining thirty kilograms of explosives?"
Luo Jianjun paused for a moment, his lips pressed tightly together. Ji Jie slammed her hand on the table, her voice not loud but forceful: "Luo Jianjun, I advise you to be honest and tell me quickly."
Luo Jianjun's shoulders twitched. He looked up at Ji Jie and then at Yang Zhen, finally unable to hold back any longer: "I'll tell you, I'll confess everything. They're all hidden on the roof of my house, on the ceiling."
He clearly explained the exact location, and Yang Zhen and his men set off in their car. They sped back to Luo Jianjun's house.
Ding Jian climbed the ladder and pushed open the ceiling, dust falling in a flurry. He searched for a while with a flashlight, then carefully carried down a wooden box. Opening the lid, Yang Zhen found neatly stacked explosives wrapped in oil paper. He squatted down and counted them; it was indeed the remaining thirty kilograms.
Everyone present breathed a sigh of relief, feeling a weight lifted off their shoulders.
After Ji Jie came out of the factory, she had a long face and didn't say a word. Ding Jian led the special police team to safely escort the explosives back. Yang Zhen drove the car, with Ji Jie in the passenger seat. Zhang Yang, Chang Baole, and Tian Rui in the back were so sleepy that they fell asleep with their heads together.
Ji Jie's expression had been off since earlier, and Yang Zhen knew what she was thinking. He gently turned the steering wheel and started a conversation in a cheeky tone: "Hey, by the way, I heard from Lao Zheng that you took on a drug trafficking case. You'd better be careful; people involved in this are risking their lives." He freed one hand to reach into his bag. "Oh, and I have some chewing gum in this bag. It's really sour; you want to try some?"
Ji Jie still had a long face, her voice so cold it could freeze: "Let me tell you, Yang Zhen, you made a huge mistake today. Don't think that just because you caught the person and found the explosives, this matter is over."
Yang Zhen remained nonchalant: "Are you going to eat or not?"
Ji Jie ignored him and continued, "What if something goes wrong because you acted on your own before we arrived?"
"Alright, alright, if you're not going to eat it, I'll eat it," Yang Zhen said with a laugh, tossing the chewing gum into his mouth. "Give it to me for a second."
Ji Jie slammed her hand on the car door armrest: "Be serious!"
The shout woke up the three people in the back row. Zhang Yang groggily opened his eyes and asked, "Who's being indecent?"
Yang Zhen glanced at him in the rearview mirror: "Go to sleep."
"Oh." Zhang Yang leaned his head on Tian Rui's shoulder and fell asleep again.
Upon arriving at the team, Zhang Yang and Chang Baole greeted each other as if in a daze, then dragged their feet toward the dormitory, exhausted from working so hard every day.
Ji Jie glanced at Yang Zhen at the office building entrance, said nothing, and turned to go to her office. She still had a drug trafficking case on her hands, which looked quite troublesome.
