The old alleyway entrance was swelteringly hot in the afternoon.

The air was filled with the acrid smell of cheap cigarettes, mixed with the stench of sewage backing up, and a few greenbottle flies buzzed around the overflowing garbage cans.

"Four twos! Pay up! Pay up!"

*Thud.* Several crumpled playing cards slammed heavily onto the wheelchair seat cushion.

Mo Fan stopped stepping on the broken bricks scattered on the ground.

Xu Bing and two thugs with dyed yellow hair were using Xin Xia's wheelchair as a card table.

Xinxia was shoved onto a worn stone bench. She lowered her head, her hands gripping the hem of her faded white dress tightly. The sun, filtering through the trees, was scorching, making her cheeks flush red. Her forehead was covered in a fine sheen of sweat.

"Boss, why do you like this type? She's pretty, but she can't leave. We're not even sure if she can... you know."

"There are plenty of pretty girls at girls' high schools, they're naive and rich, a little intimidation would be all it takes to win them over, why bother with this one..."

Xu Bing, with a cigarette butt dangling from his lips, shook his leg and said, "What do you guys know! I just love her delicate side. With the lights off, bullying her is like playing with a fairy!"

"Just watch, this wheelchair is in my hands. It won't be long before this girl has to submit."

Xu Bing, cigarette dangling from his lips, turned around and saw Mo Fan entering from the alleyway. Mo Fan spat yellow phlegm onto the ground and grinned.

"Hey! Isn't this the Great Mage Mo? What, is Magic High School on holiday?" Xu Bing patted the armrest of his wheelchair. "I heard you're still at the bottom of the class in high school, just like always."

The blond-haired guy next to him chuckled, "You should just go work on a construction site and carry bricks, don't embarrass yourself here!"

Mo Fan remained silent.

Mo Fan lifted his foot and walked straight toward the three people. He didn't walk fast, but the pebbles and cigarette butts under his shoes made a rustling sound.

The wind in the alley seemed to have stopped. A faint, pungent smell of ozone wafted through the sweltering air.

Xu Bing's smile slowly froze. Mo Fan was too calm, as calm as if he were watching a lamb to the slaughter.

"Are you fucking deaf?" Xu Bing felt a sudden chill run down his spine, jumped up, pointed at Mo Fan's nose, and cursed, "I'm talking to you..."

He hadn't finished speaking.

Mo Fan arrived in front of him, his right hand suddenly reaching out and clamping tightly around Xu Bing's neck.

Xu Bing, weighing 140 pounds, was lifted up by Mo Fan, who grabbed him by the neck with one hand.

His toes left the ground. His worn-out shoes kicked wildly in mid-air, and Xu Bing's face instantly turned purplish-red.

The blond-haired men on either side finally realized what was happening.

"Damn it! You're asking for it!" The blond guy on the left grabbed an empty wine bottle from the ground and swung it around, ready to smash it over Mo Fan's head.

"Crack!" A piercing sound of electricity tore through the air, and several thick, black arcs of electricity, like raging black snakes, shot out wildly from between Mo Fan's fingers. They instantly covered Xu Bing's entire body.

"Thunder Seal!" Mo Fan uttered two words.

boom!

A black lightning bolt blasted into Xu Bing's flesh.

Mo Fan held back nine-tenths of his power. He knew the power of the black lightning; if he had unleashed it fully, Xu Bing would have been instantly struck and extinct, leaving not even ashes. It wasn't worth sacrificing a few lives for these scumbags.

But even a fraction of that effort is enough.

The moment the high-voltage black lightning pierced through his body, Xu Bing tensed up completely.

The beer bottle in the blond-haired man's hand froze in mid-air. He was rooted to the spot, staring intently at the raging black lightning.

Mo Fan loosened his grip.

"Smack."

Xu Bing crashed onto the cement ground like a lump of mud.

He wasn't dead. But his limbs were twisted and tucked into his chest, and his body was still twitching on the ground. He was foaming at the mouth, and his exposed skin was covered in large patches of charred black blisters. Half of his hair was burned off, and white smoke was rising from his scalp.

The alley was deathly silent.

Only the residual crackling sound of electricity on Xu Bing's clothes continued to echo.

The two blond-haired men were terrified.

With two thuds, the two men knelt straight down on the ground.

"Brother Mo Fan! Master Fan! Venerable Mage! Spare us! We were blind!"

They kowtowed desperately, their foreheads slamming hard against the rough stone slabs with dull thuds. After only a few kowtows, their foreheads were bleeding.

Mo Fan flicked his right hand. The black electricity between his fingers snapped out, and the oppressive, suffocating feeling in the alley dissipated.

He looked down at the two thugs who were shaking like sieves.

"Take him with you and get out."

The two blond-haired men, as if they had been given a second chance at life, rushed over and lifted up Xu Bing, who had slumped into a puddle of mud.

Just as they were about to turn out of the alley, Mo Fan spoke coldly.

"Anyone who leaks a single word about what happened today..." Mo Fan crushed a pebble beneath his feet. "Die!"

The two thugs shuddered, their crotches soaked with sweat that dripped onto the ground. They didn't dare look back, dragging the half-dead Xu Bing as they fled.

Mo Fan turned around. The murderous coldness on his face vanished instantly.

He strode over and pushed the wheelchair back to the old stone bench with both hands.

"It's alright." Mo Fan said softly, reaching out to wipe the fine sweat from Xin Xia's forehead.

Xin Xia looked up at him. The little girl's eyes were red, but she held back her tears. She gripped Mo Fan's clothes tightly with both hands, her fingers turning white.

That black lightning was terrifying. But standing in front of her now was still the familiar Mo Fan. He carried the faint scent of sun-dried sweat, a smell that made her feel safe.

Mo Fan couldn't resist and leaned down to give her a hard kiss on her soft cheek.

"Smack!"

Xinxia's face flushed bright red, even her ears burned. She nervously glanced towards the alley entrance to make sure no one was there before speaking softly.

"Brother Mo Fan..." Xin Xia's voice trembled slightly, "How...how do you know magic?"

Mo Fan crouched down to her eye level: "Just awakened at the start of the semester, lightning element. Impressive, right?"

Xinxia bit her lower lip. There was surprise in her eyes, but even more worry.

"But it's only been a few months since school started, how can your lightning be so powerful..." Xin Xia lowered her voice to a whisper, her tone filled with fear, "Brother Mo Fan, have you... have you been in contact with people from the Black Vatican?"

Mo Fan was stunned for a moment, then burst out laughing.

He stretched out his large palm and vigorously ruffled Xinxia's soft hair, making her neatly combed hair messy.

"What are you thinking?" Mo Fan chuckled and pinched her cheek. "Your brother here is a legitimate mage. That's called having a natural talent, you know?"

Seeing Xin Xia's tense little face, Mo Fan leaned closer and softened his voice to explain, "Actually, like Mu Ningxue, I awakened early. I just kept it a secret and secretly practiced for several months."

Xinxia's tense shoulders slowly relaxed. She let out a long breath, and her fair little hand grasped Mo Fan's rough big hand in return.

"real?"

"I'll swear if I lie!" Mo Fan picked her up and put her back in the wheelchair, the leather cushions of which were burning hot from the sun. "Come on, I'll take you to eat something delicious."
