Chapter 9 "Is Dr. Chu a fan of mine?"
"Alright, that's enough. Still, you can't get it wet for the next few days." Chu Yi fastened the last corner of the gauze on Zhou Ai's forehead, stood up, and gave her another instruction.
He had just removed one of his disposable surgical gloves, which was stained with iodine, and hadn't even thrown it in the trash when Zhou Ai stood up in front of the table, looking at the outer packaging, and asked him with a somewhat aggrieved expression, "Aren't you going to eat this?"
Chu Yi wasn't sure if it was just his imagination, but he really felt that Zhou Ai's tone sounded a bit aggrieved.
He paused, then deftly removed his other glove and replied, "I'll have something to eat, thank you."
Zhou Ai raised an eyebrow; this was the first time he had ever met someone so "unyielding."
If it were someone else, and the other person had asked three times in a roundabout way whether they wanted to eat, they would definitely choose to take a bite immediately to show their sincerity.
But Chu Yi still verbally agreed obediently, without actually moving an inch.
"Rip—" Zhou Ai deftly tore open the pretty paper bag.
Chu Yi stopped in his tracks. He could clearly see that the paper bag contained several bags of potato chips.
He recognized it immediately; it was the "golden" flavor, which had been discontinued for a long time.
In the past, when he went to the airport to meet Zhou Ai, Chu Yi always liked to give him a few bags of this flavor of potato chips, but later, for some reason, it was discontinued.
After so long, seeing Zhou Ai standing in front of her with potato chips, Chu Yi felt a little strange.
"Thank you." Chu Yi reached out and took the potato chip package from Zhou Ai, then reached into her pocket, grabbed a chip, and popped it into her mouth. It was the "butter cheese" flavor.
Chu Yi used to always give Zhou Ai a few extra packets of this flavor because he himself also really liked it.
Unlike other brands of butter cheese flavor that are just plain sweet, this flavor of potato chips also has the taste of sea salt, making it sweet with a hint of saltiness.
Zhou Ai suddenly leaned closer. "Is it good?"
too close.
Chu Yi choked suddenly, and the debris aspirated into her trachea, triggering a violent cough.
Zhou Ai's palm naturally touched his back, and through the thin fabric of his handkerchief, Chu Yi's spine could clearly feel the warmth of the other's palm.
"N-nothing." Chu Yi coughed twice, tilting his head slightly. He gently pushed away Zhou Ai's hand that was pressed against his back, took a sip of water, and continued, "It tastes pretty good."
Zhou Ai closed the distance between them again. Chu Yi could feel the other's warm breath mixed with the coolness of the mint candy just by tilting her head slightly. "I was just saying, whoever takes this potato chip is the guy."
"Didn't you say you wouldn't accept GG?" Chu Yi blurted out subconsciously.
As soon as the words left his mouth, Chu Yi froze.
The potato chip in my hand shattered between my fingers with a "crunch".
He chewed mechanically, but could not taste anything; all he could hear was the deafening pounding of his own heart.
"Dr. Chu—" Zhou Ai drawled, like a small hook, "Are you a fan of mine?" His gaze slowly moved up Chu Yi's chin, meeting her eyes completely, and he asked, word by word, "You know me that well?"
Chu Yi snapped back to reality the moment his eyes met Zhou Ai's amber gaze, and the potato chip bag in his hand rattled loudly as he squeezed it.
"I have a younger sister who really likes you. I heard her mention you a couple of times when I went home the other day."
"And what about you, Dr. Chu?" Zhou Ai braced her hands on the armrests of Chu Yi's chair. The other man was unaware of the danger of this action and was almost completely encircled in Zhou Ai's arms.
"What?" The moment Chu Yi looked up, Zhou Ai saw the clarity in her eyes and immediately understood that Chu Yi had quietly retreated back into her "shell" again.
This prevented him from seeing even a fraction of it.
"I said—Dr. Chu, are you my fan?" Zhou Ai's gaze remained unwavering as she stared directly into Chu Yi's eyes and repeated herself.
Chu Yi stood up and pushed Zhou Ai's body forward, restoring the distance between them to normal.
Zhou Ai saw Chu Yi put the half-eaten bag of potato chips back on the table, and then heard her say unhurriedly, "I don't follow celebrities."
Zhou Ai suddenly laughed. He reached out and picked up the bag of potato chips that Chu Yi had put down from the table. He slowly opened it, picked up a chip, and put it in his mouth.
"Not a fan of celebrities?" He chewed on potato chips, his voice muffled but with a hint of amusement. "Then, Dr. Chu, would you be interested in seeing my next concert?"
Chu Yi paused in his clothes-tidying, his fingertips unconsciously curling up. When he turned around again, he saw Zhou Ai waving two concert tickets between his long, slender fingers. "I've put the tickets on the table for you. Remember to come."
The topic changed too quickly. Before Chu Yi could refuse, Zhou Aifeng left like the wind, and all she heard was the sound of the door closing behind her.
Chu Yi reached out and picked up the two tickets from the table, flipped them over, gently rubbed the surface of the tickets with her fingertips, and then opened the drawer to put the tickets inside.
But there was already an identical ticket lying quietly in the drawer. It was a VIP seat that he had asked someone to buy for him last month. The seat wasn't as good as the two Zhou Ai had given him, but it still cost a lot of money.
His fingers unconsciously traced the date on the ticket, and with a smirk, he deftly stuffed the rest of the bag of potato chips into the drawer and locked it.
---
Xu Yang looked at Zhou Ai, who was leaning against the passenger seat wearing sunglasses, with a sarcastic expression. Even through the sunglasses, he could sense that Zhou Ai was in a very good mood.
"Happy again?"
Zhou Ai pushed his sunglasses down slightly, revealing half of his eyes. He looked at Xu Yang and smiled, clearly pleased with himself. "How did you know?"
"Ha, how would I know?" Xu Yang slammed the steering wheel away before grinding his teeth and saying, "You're getting cocky."
Zhou Ai, unusually in a good mood, didn't take Xu Yang's veiled insult of calling him a "little dog" to heart. Instead, she pushed her sunglasses up again, rested her head on the cushion, and closed her eyes with a smile on her lips.
Xu Yang glanced at the curve of Zhou Ai's lips through the rearview mirror and couldn't help but retort, "Did you send the potato chips out?"
Zhou Ai's fingertips tapped lightly on the car door armrest, her smile deepening at the words: "Not only did you give him a piece, you even watched him eat one." Her eyelashes trembled slightly behind her sunglasses as she recalled Chu Yi's reddened eyes when he choked on the potato chips, "His ears even turned red."
"That's it?" Xu Yang swerved to avoid the car that suddenly changed lanes. "You, Zhou, a big star, personally delivered the tickets, and this is what you get?"
Zhou Ai suddenly took off her sunglasses, and Xu Yang turned his head to see that her amber eyes were filled with a smile in the sunlight.
Xu Yang suddenly remembered something: "Wait, weren't Golden potato chips discontinued for three years? Where did you get them from—"
"The company that took over the potato chip business acquired this production line." Zhou Ai put his sunglasses back on, obscuring most of his handsome face again. Xu Yang heard him say unhurriedly, "Just to replicate this flavor."
Xu Yang nearly slammed on the brakes, the steering wheel even slipped. He stared wide-eyed at Zhou Ai, who remained calm and collected in the passenger seat, his voice rising eight octaves: "Are you crazy? Just for a few bags of potato chips? Bro... the guy you broke the contract with could have bought this company."
"I don't care." Zhou Ai calmly uttered another sentence in English that almost made Xu Yang vomit blood.
"But are you sure he's Pi? What if it's just a coincidence? Or maybe he just looks similar? I don't think Dr. Chu is the type to chase after celebrities at the airport." Xu Yang didn't waste any time either, launching a three-question barrage of denials straight to Zhou Ai's heart. Only when Zhou Ai's smile suddenly faded did Xu Yang stop his attack.
"Shut up."
