Chapter 8 "Can I look for you?"
A piercing alarm suddenly blared down the emergency room corridor. Zhou Ai had just turned the corner when she heard a frantic shout behind her: "Make way! Emergency resuscitation!"
He instinctively sidestepped, and the emergency bed almost grazed the hem of his clothes.
The patient on the bed was ashen-faced, his chest flat and motionless. Chu Yi, kneeling on the resuscitation bed, pressed his hands together against the patient's chest repeatedly. His white coat billowed backward as he moved rapidly, revealing a blue scrub suit soaked with sweat underneath.
This time, Chu Yi did not wear a mask.
That face, which usually exuded a cold and aloof aura even through a mask, was now taut with effort, his cheekbones flushed an unnatural red, and his wisps of hair soaked with sweat, clinging to his reddened skin. His lower lip was bitten until it turned white, yet the pressing motions in his hands were terrifyingly steady, each press carrying an almost cruel precision.
"1mg of adrenaline IV push!" Chu Yi's voice was incredibly hoarse, yet it was exceptionally clear in the noisy corridor.
The wheels of the emergency bed screeched as they turned.
Zhou Ai saw Chu Yi sway with the jolt, his knees hitting the metal bed rails hard, but he didn't even frown. When he used his blood-stained fingertips to pry open the patient's eyelids to check his pupils, the protruding wrist bones were shining white, and it felt like there was room to grab them with one hand.
Beads of sweat rolled down Chu Yi's jawline, dripping onto the patient's bluish-purple lips. Zhou Ai suddenly remembered that day when this person applied medicine to her with a cotton swab, the shadow cast by his eyelashes under the light had also trembled with the same arc.
"Prepare for defibrillation! 200 joules!"
The moment Chu Yi tore open the patient's collar, Zhou Ai seemed to sense it and suddenly turned around.
Across the life-or-death rescue scene, their eyes met in the air thick with the smell of disinfectant.
Chu Yi's eyes shone terrifyingly bright under the emergency lights, as if all her composure and self-control had been burned to ashes, revealing the burning soul within.
While averting their gazes, Chu Yi pressed the defibrillator button without hesitation.
The moment the patient's body bounced up, Zhou Ai heard her heart leap heavily in her chest.
---
An hour had passed since he finished treating the patient. Chu Yi felt completely soaked in sweat. He looked down at the bloodstains on his white coat and rubbed his temples, feeling a headache coming on. His bangs, damp with sweat, hung down, brushing against his brow bone with each step, tickling him irritably.
Chu Yi frowned and casually swept his hand back, pulling all his wet black hair behind his head. This action completely exposed his smooth forehead to the corridor's overhead light, with undried water streaks running down his hairline to his brow bone, shimmering in the light.
A few unruly strands of hair fell down with each step he took, and he casually brushed them aside with the back of his hand, which was covered in iodine, leaving a faint yellow mark on his forehead.
"Finished with work?" A familiar male voice rang out the moment Chu Yi pushed open the office door.
Chu Yi paused in his action of pushing the door open, frozen in place by the sight before him.
Zhou Ai appeared in his office at some point, sitting on a waiting chair with her legs crossed.
Hearing the door open, the other person lazily raised their eyes, their amber pupils like melting honey under the light, next to them was a bulging paper bag with a very nice outer packaging.
Chu Yi then came to his senses, his fingertips unconsciously tracing the metallic texture of the doorknob. He had indeed seen Zhou Ai in the corridor, but the adrenaline from the emergency treatment hadn't completely subsided, and he had dismissed that fleeting glimpse as a hallucination.
"Hmm." Chu Yi walked in, closed the door behind her, and casually took off her blood-stained white coat and hung it on the hanger.
Without pausing, she turned around and walked straight to Zhou Ai, bent down, and reached out to tear off the gauze on his forehead to check the wound. But as soon as she reached out, Zhou Ai easily grabbed her wrist.
"Sorry I didn't tell you." As Zhou Ai grabbed Chu Yi, the apology naturally came out of Chu Yi's mouth.
Suffering from a hangover from drinking last night, coupled with the recent emergency treatment, Chu Yi felt like her brain was short-circuiting. When she saw Zhou Ai, she assumed he was there to change her dressing and had been waiting for her for over an hour without complaining.
As soon as Chu Yi stepped inside, she quickly took off her blood-stained white coat, wanting to treat Zhou Ai's wound as soon as possible. So she acted on her own initiative, without informing Zhou Ai in advance, and directly reached out to touch her.
When Zhou Ai grabbed his wrist, Chu Yi instantly sobered up a bit. He subconsciously apologized and took a step back, saying, "I'm so sorry, my mind isn't quite clear."
Zhou Ai tightened his grip, preventing Chu Yi from breaking free. His gaze swept across Chu Yi's face, and the other's retreating movement made his heart inexplicably tighten.
"No rush. Do you need to rest for a bit?" Zhou Ai's voice was a few decibels lower than usual, her thumb unconsciously rubbing the skin on the inside of Chu Yi's wrist.
Chu Yi then noticed that the gauze on Zhou Ai's forehead was clean and there were no traces of blood seepage.
He blinked his sore eyes, his gaze falling on their wrists that were touching. Zhou Ai's fingertips still carried the coolness of the outside air, while the skin on his wrist felt like it was being corroded by sulfuric acid from the other's touch, a burning pain shooting straight to his heart.
Chu Yi quickly pulled his hand away from Zhou Ai's. He assumed the other person had also forgotten to let go, and his voice was still a little hoarse. He subconsciously cleared his throat, "It's okay. Let me change it for you first."
Zhou Ai looked at his empty palm, curled his lips into a smile, and casually picked up the bulging paper bag next to him and handed it to Chu Yi. "I brought some snacks, would you like to have some?" He paused, his gaze sweeping over Chu Yi's slightly red wrist, subconsciously wondering if he had used too much force just now.
"Thank you." Chu Yi took the paper bag, her fingertips accidentally brushing against Zhou Ai's hand, and both of them flinched.
Zhou Ai stood up, the height difference forcing him to lower his head slightly to look at Chu Yi: "You look very tired."
Chu Yi instinctively wanted to deny it, but when she looked up and met those amber eyes, she changed her mind: "Yes, I just finished resuscitating a patient with a myocardial infarction."
Zhou Ai watched as Chu Yi placed the paper bag on the table, turned around, and walked away, showing no intention of opening it.
"Let me change it for you first." Chu Yi walked over with a disposable dressing kit in his hand, and Zhou Ai watched as he skillfully opened the outer packaging.
Zhou Ai didn't know why she suddenly asked, "Aren't you going to rest?"
In the past, when Xu Yang and the others rejected him a second time, his face would turn ashen, but seeing Chu Yi's subconscious rejection, he actually felt it was reasonable.
Hearing Zhou Ai's second question, Chu Yi's fingers froze in mid-air for a moment, then she put on a agreeable expression again, "It's okay, I'll change it for you first. You've been waiting for so long, the sooner you change it, the sooner you can go back."
Upon hearing Chu Yi's reply, Zhou Ai remained silent and nimbly got up to lie on the dressing bed.
When Zhou Ai lay down, and their eyes met under the spotlight, Chu Yi belatedly realized that she hadn't been wearing a mask.
In fact, Chu Yi could glimpse some of Zhou Ai's true emotions through the photos, but when the real person was fully exposed to his view, Chu Yi felt that he could only glimpse three-tenths of Zhou Ai's true emotions at most.
That's already the absolute limit.
Under the spotlight, not only could Chu Yi see Zhou Ai clearly, but Zhou Ai could also see Chu Yi clearly from his chin to his eyes with just a slight opening of his eyes.
Chu Yi tore off the gauze from Zhou Ai's forehead, revealing a clean, healed wound underneath. "It's healing well. How many times have you changed the dressing?"
"I can't remember." Without the mask covering her face, Zhou Ai's warm breath felt almost directly on Chu Yi's face.
Chu Yi paused in her hand holding the disinfectant cotton ball, then added, "This time it's changed, so you can wait a few days to go directly to have the stitches removed."
After speaking, Chu Yi looked at Zhou Ai lying down and slightly raised her chin. Her amber eyes seemed to brighten even more, and she seemed to lean closer, saying, "Can I talk to you?"
"Okay," Chu Yi heard herself say.
Zhou Ai suddenly smiled, and the curve of her eyes reminded Chu Yi of the expression he first saw on the big screen at the concert.
Back then, we were separated by an entire bustling stadium, but now we're so close I can count his eyelashes.
