Chapter 19 "Dr. Chu, you saved another person today."
On the day his stitches were removed, Zhou Ai arrived at the hospital right on time. He was dressed as usual in a low-key black casual outfit, with his hat pulled low and his face completely covered by a mask.
But his tall stature and undeniable aura still drew frequent glances from people in the corridor.
He found the dressing room of the surgical outpatient clinic with ease, but did not see Chu Yi in the reserved examination room. There was only a slightly anxious nurse inside.
"Is Dr. Chu Yi here?" Zhou Ai knocked on the open door, her voice coming through her mask and sounding a little muffled.
The nurse looked up and saw him, paused for a moment, seemingly recognizing him but unsure, and quickly said, "Dr. Chu... he was just called to clinic room number 3 to handle an urgent matter. Please wait a moment, he should be done soon."
Zhou Ai nodded slightly, said nothing, and leaned against the wall by the door to wait. He didn't like the crowded and noisy environment of the hospital, but at this moment his patience was unusually good.
However, just a few minutes later, a sharp commotion and the sound of things being smashed suddenly came from the other end of the corridor, mixed with a woman's screams and a man's roars. The chaotic sound waves quickly approached.
"It's in examination room number 3!" The nurse's expression changed, and she suddenly stood up and tried to run out.
Zhou Ai frowned, instinctively feeling that this matter might be related to Chu Yi. Without much thought, she took a long stride and followed.
A crowd had gathered outside consultation room number 3, but no one dared to get too close. Inside, the room was a mess, with medical records scattered all over the floor. A burly man with a flushed face was waving his arms agitatedly. In front of him, Chu Yi was standing in front of a young nurse who was pale with fright and tears streaming down her face.
"You fucking quacks! You're all swindlers! I spent so much money and it didn't work at all! It hurts like hell!" The man roared, spitting as he spoke, his eyes murky and frantic, clearly in a state of extreme irrationality.
Chu Yi stood ramrod straight, his white coat remaining impeccably clean amidst the chaos, though his face was as cold as ice. He wasn't intimidated by the other person's imposing manner; his voice was unusually calm. "Sir, please calm down. We have explained your problem repeatedly, and the treatment plan needs time to take effect. If you have any objections, we can communicate normally through the medical affairs department, instead of disrupting order here and frightening other patients and medical staff."
"Communicate my ass! You're all in cahoots!" The man wouldn't listen at all, and was instead enraged by Chu Yi's calm attitude.
His bloodshot eyes darted around, and suddenly he spotted a small knife on the vehicle next to him. He lunged forward and grabbed it.
"Ah—!" A gasp rang out instantly, and the crowd shrank back in terror.
The man gripped the knife, gesturing wildly, the tip pointed directly at Chu Yi and the nurse behind him, hurling insults: "Damn it! If you don't give me an explanation today, nobody's going to get away with this! I don't want to live anyway! I'll take you all down with me!"
The cold, metallic gleam shimmered under the light, exuding a menacing aura.
Chu Yi's eyes suddenly sharpened. Instead of retreating, he placed his body even more firmly in front of the nurse who was trembling with fear and instinctively gripping the back of his white coat.
He could even clearly feel the fear in the girl behind him; her hands gripped his clothes so tightly that her nails almost dug through the fabric.
"Dr. Chu... Dr. Chu..." The nurse's voice was choked with sobs and extreme fear.
Chu Yi didn't turn around; his entire focus was on the man with the knife. He spoke in a low voice, as calm as possible, to the person behind him: "Don't be afraid, back up, find a chance to get out."
"You fucking quacks! You're all swindlers! I spent so much money and it didn't work at all! It hurts like hell!" the man roared, spitting as he spoke, his eyes murky and frantic.
"Ah—!" As the man moved, another gasp rang out from the surroundings.
The man, gripping a knife, seemed to have lost his mind and lunged directly at Chu Yi and the nurse behind him! His movements were swift and ruthless!
In a flash, Chu Yi's eyes sharpened, his reaction incredibly fast. He didn't retreat, but instead sidestepped the blade with precision, his right leg rising swiftly and powerfully, delivering a clean and crisp side kick that slammed into the man's wrist holding the knife!
"Ouch!" the man cried out in pain as the knife flew out of his hand with a clang.
Before the other man could react, Chu Yi followed up with another kick, this time to the back of his knee. The man lost his balance and fell heavily to his knees with a thud.
The whole process took only two or three seconds, so fast it was dazzling.
"Go!" Chu Yi immediately seized the opportunity to push the nurse behind him, who was completely stunned, towards the door, making sure she was out of danger.
The man collapsed to the ground in pain, excruciating agony shooting through his wrists and knees. His reason vanished, replaced by rage and humiliation. He struggled to lift his head, his face contorted in a grotesque grimace as he glared at Chu Yi, roaring hoarsely:
"You fucking dare hit me?! Fuck you! The doctor hit someone! I saw it! I'm going to sue you! I'll make you shed this white skin! You just wait!!"
He repeatedly screamed "I'm going to sue you," and his foul language was incessant.
Chu Yi merely glanced at him coldly, as if looking at some insignificant filth. He even casually straightened the hem of his white coat, which had become slightly disheveled from the movement, his demeanor calm to the point of indifference.
The surrounding noise and the man's shouts seemed to have no effect on him.
Everyone inside and outside the consultation room breathed a sigh of relief.
The nurse being protected nearly collapsed, her legs buckling. A colleague who rushed over caught her and gently comforted her. Still pale, she looked at Chu Yi with eyes full of gratitude and lingering fear, "Dr. Chu... thank you..."
Chu Yi finally breathed a slight sigh of relief, his tense shoulders relaxing. He turned around, nodded to the nurse, and his voice returned to its usual calmness, but upon closer listening, there was a barely perceptible hint of softening: "It's alright. Go and rest for a bit to calm your nerves."
He bent down to straighten his wrinkled white coat, and when he looked up, his gaze met that of Zhou Ai, who was standing at the door watching him quietly.
Eyes facing each other.
Zhou Ai's gaze was deep, carrying an indescribable scrutiny and inquiry, as if she were truly looking at him for the first time, penetrating his calm and professional exterior to see something else entirely.
Chu Yi clearly hadn't expected Zhou Ai to be here, and to have witnessed the chaos just now.
A fleeting hint of surprise flashed in his eyes, but it was quickly replaced by his usual indifference. He merely gave Zhou Ai a barely perceptible nod as a greeting.
The surrounding noise seemed to become a blurred background sound.
Zhou Ai looked at Chu Yi, but the image of him pulling the nurse behind him to face danger was still vivid in his mind. He unconsciously twirled his fingers in his pocket, then stepped forward and stopped in front of Chu Yi.
"Dr. Chu," Zhou Ai said, her voice a few decibels lower than usual, "it seems you're having a pretty exciting shift."
"Just trying to earn some hard-earned money," Chu Yi replied softly, her voice carrying a hint of barely perceptible weariness.
He took the opportunity to sit on the bench behind him that had luckily not been overturned, leaning forward almost imperceptibly, resting his elbows on his knees, and taking a couple of deep breaths.
The lightning-fast struggle and intense mental strain just now belatedly turned into a feeling of exhaustion, and my heart was pounding heavily in my chest.
Zhou Ai leaned against the edge of the table, her long legs casually propped up, quietly watching him recover without disturbing him.
After a while, Zhou Ai finally moved. He reached into the side pocket of his backpack and took out an unopened bottle of electrolyte drink. Tiny water droplets were still condensed on the bottle, indicating that it had been recently purchased.
He handed it over, the bottle lightly touching Chu Yi's arm.
Chu Yi raised her head, her bangs slightly disheveled from the earlier movement, her eyes still carrying a lingering sense of shock from surviving a close call. She looked at the drink offered to her, then followed the hand with its distinct knuckles to its owner.
Zhou Ai leaned against the wall, raised an eyebrow at Chu Yi, and gestured for him to take it.
Chu Yi's gaze lingered on the bottle of beverage and Zhou Ai's face for two seconds before she seemed to fully come to her senses.
His eyelashes fluttered slightly, concealing the last ripples in his eyes, before he reached out and took the bottle. The cool touch through his palm slightly suppressed his slight unease.
"Thanks." His voice returned to its usual steady tone, though it was slightly lower and hoarse than usual.
He unscrewed the cap, tilted his head back, and took a few sips. The slightly cool liquid slid down his throat, which did indeed make him more alert.
Zhou Ai watched his Adam's apple bob, watched him slowly put down the water bottle, his fingertips unconsciously tracing the cold surface, before slowly speaking. Her tone was unreadable, but her eyes remained fixed on Chu Yi: "Not bad. You've trained?"
Chu Yi placed the water bottle on the disposal cart next to him, raised his hand and pressed his knuckles to his temples, seemingly a little tired. "I used to practice self-defense a few days casually at school," he replied casually, clearly not wanting to elaborate.
Upon hearing this, Zhou Ai's lips curled into a very faint smile, but he didn't ask any further questions. His gaze swept over the messy clinic and the crowd outside the door, who were gradually dispersing but still whispering, before finally settling back on Chu Yi.
"Looks like the line can't be removed today?" he asked. The commotion here is too big; it certainly won't be possible to restore normal medical order anytime soon.
Chu Yi glanced around and frowned. Security guards and department heads who had rushed to the scene were handling the aftermath. The troublemaker had been taken away, but the mess he left behind would take time to clean up.
After a while, Chu Yi's bangs were a little disheveled, but his eyes had regained their composure and calm. He looked at Zhou Ai and hesitated slightly before asking, "Are you... busy today?"
Zhou Ai's eyebrows twitched slightly, seemingly surprised by his question, but she still replied, "No rush. Today's time is reserved for removing the stitches."
Chu Yi nodded. "If you don't mind, please wait a few minutes. I'll finish up here, it'll be quick. Then..." He paused, "come to my office to remove the stitches. This place can't be used for the time being."
The examination room was indeed in a mess and needed thorough cleaning and disinfection; no procedures could be performed in the short term.
Zhou Ai looked at Chu Yi. The other man's white coat was slightly wrinkled from his earlier movements, but his expression had completely calmed down. The corner of his mouth curved almost imperceptibly as he readily replied, "Okay."
Zhou Ai straightened up and added in a calm tone, "I'll wait for you in your office."
After speaking, he raised his hand very naturally and gently tapped the half-empty electrolyte drink bottle that Chu Yi had placed aside with his fingertip, as if making a silent mark.
Without waiting for Chu Yi's response, he pulled down the brim of his hat, turned around, and walked familiarly toward the doctor's office.
Chu Yi watched Zhou Ai's departing figure, then glanced at the drink that Zhou Ai had touched with her fingertip, a very faint fluctuation flashing in her eyes that she herself did not notice.
But he quickly looked away, took a deep breath, stood up, and threw himself back into dealing with the chaos before him.
Chu Yi quickly spoke with the security guards and department head who had arrived, reassured the frightened nurses, and briefly explained the follow-up matters.
The whole process was efficient and calm, as if the incident had not affected him at all.
About ten minutes later, Chu Yi returned to his office. The door was ajar. He pushed it open and saw Zhou Ai sitting in the chair opposite his desk, relaxed and casually flipping through a medical journal on the table. He only lazily raised his eyes when he heard the door open.
"Is it all taken care of?" Zhou Ai closed the journal and put it back in its place.
"Mm," Chu Yi responded, gently closing the door behind him to shut out the noise from outside. He walked to the sink, squeezed out hand sanitizer, and carefully cleaned his hands; the sound of running water was particularly clear in the quiet office.
Zhou Ai's gaze subtly surveyed the office. It was tidy, simple, and almost devoid of personal touch, with only the densely packed professional books on the bookshelves and the neatly stacked medical records on the desk. The air was filled with a faint smell of disinfectant and paper, which perfectly matched the impression Chu Yi gave off.
Chu Yi dried her hands, took a sterile dressing kit from the cabinet, and walked up to Zhou Ai: "Here you go."
Zhou Ai obediently tilted her head slightly, turning her injured forehead toward a better light source.
The office lighting was softer than in the examination room. Chu Yi unpacked the package, skillfully put on sterile gloves, and handled the tweezers and scissors with remarkable steadiness. He leaned slightly closer, his focused gaze fixed on the wound, his soft breath brushing against Zhou Ai's forehead.
Zhou Ai could clearly smell the clean disinfectant scent on Chu Yi, mixed with a very faint, perhaps refreshing, shampoo scent. He could see Chu Yi's lowered eyelashes, and that his calm eyes were now filled only with him and the wound that needed to be treated.
The stitch removal process was quick, and I barely felt any pain. Chu Yi's movements were precise and gentle, carrying a professional and reassuring quality.
"Alright." Chu Yi straightened up, threw the used instruments into the medical waste bin, and took off her gloves. "The wound is healing well. Be careful to keep it clean and don't get it wet for now."
"Hmm." Zhou Ai raised her hand and gently touched her now smooth forehead. Looking at Chu Yi, who was packing her things, she suddenly spoke, her tone unreadable. "Dr. Chu... saved another person today."
Chu Yi paused, then looked up at him.
Zhou Ai met his gaze, a meaningful smile slowly curving her lips: "Although the method is rather unusual."
