Chapter 18 "I'll take this job."
The phone vibrated on the table, and the screen lit up, displaying a new message from Z.AI. Chu Yi was writing a medical record, glanced at it, and opened it.
The message was brief and to the point: "Dr. Chu, is tomorrow afternoon convenient? I'd like to come and have my stitches removed."
It's finally here. Chu Yi breathed a sigh of relief; this state of uncertainty could finally end.
He replied succinctly: "Sure. After 3 PM, in the emergency surgery clinic."
The message was sent successfully, and he was about to put down his phone and continue working when the screen lit up again, and a notification sound rang out.
This time it wasn't text, but a barrage of images flooding in like a screen-filling overload.
Chu Yi opened the chat window, and her eyes were greeted by a variety of brightly colored packaging bags and different flavors of potato chips, all from the Golden brand. The entire chat interface was filled with them: original, barbecue, tomato, lime, and even some limited-edition flavors that looked rather strange.
The bombardment of images finally stopped, followed by a text message and a live emoji:
[Dr. Chu, which flavor do you prefer?]
[A smug little dog wagging its tail and looking down at you.gif]
Chu Yi looked at the pile of high-oil, high-salt puffed food and that arrogant emoji, and her brows furrowed almost imperceptibly.
He patiently replied in as polite and clear a tone as possible: "I don't really like potato chips, thank you for your kindness."
The implication should be clear enough—no need, don't bring it.
However, Zhou Ai's reading comprehension skills were clearly taught by the same teacher as Cheng Yingzhi.
Completely ignoring his refusal, they sent him another close-up picture with the caption "Extra Rich Butter Cheese Flavor".
Do you like this butter cheese? This looks pretty good.
Chu Yi stared at this conclusion, which was entirely based on his own imagination, and for a moment, he didn't know how to respond. He silently stared at the screen, his fingertips pausing above the keyboard, finally typing only a string of ellipses: [...]
He hoped the string of symbols would convey his speechlessness and yet another, powerless rejection.
Unfortunately, the signal received by the other party seemed to be completely opposite.
Zhou Ai's message came immediately, her tone confident, even carrying a hint of "look how considerate I am":
Okay, I'll bring it to you tomorrow.
Chu Yi stared at the words, holding her phone, completely stunned.
In an instant, all the confusion was answered.
Why were Cheng Yingzhi and Zhou Ai able to become childhood friends who shared similar views for over a decade?
Why would Cheng Yingzhi inexplicably ask him if Zhou Ai had "harassed" him?
Why are these two always able to precisely ignore the true meaning behind his words and then race along their own bizarre thought processes...?
So that's where the root of the problem lies!
They selectively accept information and possess a bizarre ability to automatically translate all rejections and denials into "playing hard to get" or "I'm too embarrassed to say yes directly"!
A profound realization, a mixture of absurdity and powerlessness, overwhelmed Chu Yi like a tidal wave.
It drowned out Chu Yi, the "i" person.
He put down his phone, raised his hand to press his throbbing temples, and then politely replied with two words: "Thank you."

Xu Yang pushed open the door and was almost overwhelmed by the mountain of Golden brand potato chip bags piled up on the sofa.
He stared dumbfounded at the colorful "spectacle," exclaiming, "Holy crap, Zhou, are you buying potato chips wholesale and planning to live off them?"
Zhou Ai ignored him, staring intently at her phone screen with a wide, radiant smile, like a cat that had just stolen some fish.
On the screen was Chu Yi's string of ellipses filled with speechless emotion [...], followed by the seemingly compromised but actually on the verge of collapse "Thank you."
Even through the screen, Zhou Ai could almost see how the usually calm and collected Dr. Chu was caught off guard by his completely unpredictable bombardment of potato chips, her brows furrowed, and perhaps even a faint blush of helplessness would appear on her pale face.
Just imagining the scene made him feel great.
"That's so creepy..." Xu Yang felt a chill run down his spine from the laughter, rubbed his arms, and decided to get down to business first. He handed over the tablet he was holding, opened a file, and said, "Here, there's a new notebook. Take a look and see if you're interested."
Zhou Ai lazily lifted her eyelids and glanced at the title on the screen—"Planning Documentary Reality Show Project: Heart to Distant Mountains (Season 1)".
"Variety shows?" He leaned back listlessly, his fingers unconsciously swiping through his chat with Chu Yi, his tone dismissive. "Not interested. You know I'm too lazy to play along with those people."
Xu Yang had anticipated this reaction.
Zhou Ai's entry into the entertainment industry was purely a matter of fate and her own quirky "experiential" interests. She wasn't particularly obsessed with hype, exposure, or making money, and she chose jobs entirely based on her mood. Variety shows were frequent visitors to her blacklist, which she found fake and a waste of time.
"Don't be so quick to dismiss it," Xu Yang quickly swiped the page to show him the key content. "This is different. It's not one of those mindless game shows. Look, it's about going to remote mountain villages and providing free medical consultations with local village doctors. It's more like a medical charity documentary, which is quite interesting. And..."
Xu Yang paused, observing Zhou Ai's expression, and cautiously offered a name: "I heard that among the candidates the production team is contacting for the 'flying doctor' position... it seems like Dr. Chu Yi is one of them."
The finger that was swiping the screen suddenly stopped.
Zhou Ai's previously casual gaze instantly focused, shifting from the phone screen back to the tablet, and the lazy expression on her face disappeared.
Zhou Ai snatched the tablet, his fingers swiping quickly and precisely across the pages. He no longer just skimmed the titles, but read word by word the descriptions of the program format, location, and especially the duties of the "flying doctor." His focused expression was even more serious than when he was looking at his own concert planning proposal.
Xu Yang watched from the side, his heart skipped a beat, and he thought to himself: This is promising! Sure enough, bringing up Dr. Chu is more effective than anything else!
Zhou Ai quickly finished browsing, then looked up with an astonishingly bright gaze; her earlier impatience had completely vanished.
He pointed to the "flight doctor" entry, his tone carrying an undeniable certainty: "Are you sure this flight doctor is him?"
"Uh... about 70% or 80%. I heard that the project leader has some connections with Young Master Cheng and strongly recommended it. It seems that Dr. Chu himself... isn't completely against it?" Xu Yang tried to leave room for maneuver in his words, afraid that if it wasn't true, this ancestor would turn on him on the spot.
Zhou Ai stared at those lines of text, tapped the name "Chu Yi" lightly with her fingertips, and suddenly laughed. Her laughter was filled with a wild and playful determination.
"Okay." He tossed the tablet back to Xu Yang with a flourish, sank back into the sofa, grabbed a bag of butter and cheese chips, tore it open, and took a crunchy bite, his movements as casual as if he were deciding where to go for drinks tonight.
"I'll take this job."
Xu Yang: "..."
Although the goal was achieved, why did he always feel that Zhou Ai's reason for agreeing to take on this charity variety show had absolutely nothing to do with the word "charity"?
