Chapter 105 Poker
In the afternoon, everyone returned to the ship and continued their journey.
"That thing you made this morning tasted pretty good, but it's still not quite as good as roast meat," Baron said to Rod, standing on the cleaned deck.
"Missell would definitely disagree with that," Rhodes thought to himself, but he didn't refute it, because he also thought the roast meat was tastier, but of course he was referring to the meat he ate before he transmigrated.
"I think the two are actually quite similar," Hammer said from the side.
"Shouldn't you be resting in bed after you get on the ship?" Rod asked curiously.
"I will face the storm head-on, and today I will overcome my seasickness," Hammer declared righteously.
But the next moment
"vomit……"
Rod and Baron helped Hammer, who had vomited everything out of his stomach, back to his room.
Seeing Hammer's weak and powerless appearance, Rhodes shook his head helplessly. If he gets this seasick on a calm river, what will he do if he gets to the open sea?
However, it would be best for someone like him to never take a sea voyage in his entire life.
Life on the ship was incredibly boring, but Rod was prepared. He found a carpenter and paid him to make 54 cards of the same size and thickness, and even had him polish the cards.
Later, Rhodes found a down-on-his-luck painter in a tavern and asked him to draw the picture Rhodes described on a card.
A simple deck of cards was thus created.
Aside from being a bit thick and difficult to shuffle, this hand is practically perfect.
Playing cards originated on Earth in the 12th century, but human civilization had existed in this world for thousands or even tens of thousands of years, and adventurers' entertainment was still limited to playing dice.
However, according to historical records, life in this world thousands of years ago was similar to that now, without much change. In other words, it had been in an era similar to the Middle Ages for thousands of years.
Rod originally wanted to make a set of mahjong tiles, but time didn't allow it, and it wasn't convenient to carry around, so he had to give up in the end.
"I'll teach you a game," Rod said to Baron after they returned to the deck.
"What game?" Baron asked curiously.
Rod took out a deck of cards from his pocket, taught Baron how to recognize the cards, and then explained the rules of Dou Dizhu to him.
Besides Dou Dizhu, there are many other poker games, such as 24-point poker and Texas Hold'em.
But now all Rod wants to do is play Dou Dizhu, a real-person Dou Dizhu game that doesn't require Happy Beans.
"I think I understand. It sounds kind of interesting. It's pretty boring on the ship, but we're one person short now." Baron scratched his head.
"You can ask Quentin," Rhodes said.
"The captain of this ship? I don't like him. Let's ask someone else. If Hammer is still awake, we can call him, but he seemed to have fallen asleep before we left," Baron said.
"Then let's find Messiah?" Rhodes asked again.
"That's fine too, as long as she's willing. We basically don't know anyone else on the ship," Baron said.
"Then I'll go ask her," Rod said before walking back into the cabin.
Having found Messiah's room, Rhodes knocked on the door. Each time his hand touched the door, a golden ripple would appear on it; this must be the divine magic Messiah used on the door. If one tried to bang on it, they might be bounced back.
"Who knocked on the door?" Messil asked from inside the room, but she didn't open it.
"It's me," Rod replied.
Not long after, Messil opened the door.
"What?" she asked, noticing cake crumbs at the corner of her mouth.
"Want to play cards?" Rod asked.
"What are cards?" Messil asked curiously.
Rod took out a deck of playing cards made of wooden pieces from his purse.
"This is it."
"How do we play?" Messiah asked again.
Rhodes explained the rules of Dou Dizhu to Messil again in a simple way.
"It sounds simple, but it's not very interesting. I have other things to do, you can go find someone else," Misel said after hearing the rules.
Rod was helpless and could only go back to Baron.
"I'll teach you another way to play, one that only requires two people. It's called 'Five Cards'..."
……
Rhodes got bored after playing for a while and didn't want to play anymore, but Baron kept pulling him along, wanting Rhodes to play with him. The two sat on the deck and played until it got dark and they couldn't see anything anymore before they stopped.
The main problem is that Rod kept winning, which made it boring. It's only fun when the opponents are evenly matched. This afternoon felt like playing cards with a child. Also, Baron kept forgetting the rules and sometimes even misreading the cards.
"It's getting late, let's go get something to eat." Rhodes had finally waited until dark; playing with just the two of them was really boring.
"Alright then, let's continue tomorrow," Baron said. "I'm tired of this kind of game too. Tomorrow we'll find someone else and play the kind you mentioned before."
"Alright, if there's really no one else, let Quentin come," Rhodes said.
He had already decided that if tomorrow was just as boring as today, he would simply give the deck of cards to Baron and let him find someone else to play with.
This kind of game is also very suitable for Baron and his friends, as it helps them develop their intelligence.
"How many more days until we reach Gulfstream City?" Rhodes asked as they descended the stairs.
"I don't know either. You'll have to ask Quentin and the others. They're always on this river, they'll definitely know how much longer it will take us," Baron replied.
When Rhodes and his crew arrived at the dining cabin, most people had already finished their dinner, leaving only Quentin and a few young crew members in the room.
"Is there any food left?" Rod asked.
"I specially saved these for you." Quentin stood up and took two plates, placing them next to his seat.
It contains bread and fish soup.
"Thank you." Rod walked to where the plates were placed.
"How did things go with what you did with the lord?" Rhodes asked.
"It's alright. The lord here is a good man. He bought the ship at a high price because of our heavy casualties and even gave us a bounty. I'll go get it for you later." Quentin took a sip of his drink.
"No need," Rod quickly refused. "You should keep this money as a pension."
"No, you have to have a share of this money." Quentin put down his glass.
"Didn't I already take it? I'm quite satisfied with that sword," Rhodes said.
"Not only for you, but also for the person next to you." Quentin pointed to Baron, who was eating and drinking heartily.
"Just give me a sword too, something sharp," Baron said without looking up.
"Alright then, I'll take you to choose after you finish dinner," Quentin said again.
"Alright," Rhodes nodded. "How many more days until we reach Gulfstream City?"
"It'll be there in a week at most. The further south we go, the stronger the current becomes, and the faster the boat goes. There are a lot of rocks ahead of us. After tonight, I won't be able to row the boat and drink at night like I have the past few days." Quentin finished speaking and downed his drink in one gulp...
