Steam Old Days: The Extraordinary Begins with a Corpse Collector
Chapter 56: Background and Consequences, Tommy's Choice
"That's right, he drank so much alcohol that we couldn't even carry him."
Tommy looked at Walter, who was slumped over the bar.
Walter reeked of alcohol and was completely drunk. Even though the bottle was empty, he was still clutching it tightly.
Tommy shook his head helplessly and said to his men beside him, "You guys go do your own things, leave him to me."
As he spoke, Tommy snatched the bottle of liquor from Walter's arms.
Walter, realizing something was missing from his arms, closed his eyes and groped around aimlessly, trying to put it back in his arms.
Tommy grabbed Walter's hand, turned to the side, and placed Walter's hand on his shoulder.
Then, using his waist and abdomen, he pressed Walter's heavy body entirely onto himself.
Tommy carried the unconscious Walter away from the bar and upstairs.
Only Tommy's heavy footsteps and Walter's shuffling shoes echoed on the stairs.
The dim yellow gas lamp cast their shadows, making them appear to grow longer and shorter.
The shadows cast on the wall became distorted.
Tommy used his shoulder to push open the door and carried Walter to the bedside.
He put Walter on the bed.
Walter, who was 1.87 meters tall, slammed onto the bed with a dull thud.
But he just groaned, turned over, and buried his face in the pillow.
Tommy felt a pang in his heart as he looked at this once fearless man, now so dejected.
He sat down on the edge of the bed and reached out to touch Walter's strong arm.
Tommy's lips moved as if he were murmuring something.
"My brother, I warned you not to harbor hatred towards someone casually, as it will ultimately harm you."
"Um……"
Walter seemed to hear Tommy's words. He moved his shoulders and let out a muffled groan, his voice hoarse and dry from the alcohol.
Suddenly, a figure slowly walked in through the door.
"Boss..."
The man called out softly.
Upon hearing this, Tommy didn't turn around. He simply looked at Walter on the bed and asked, "Are all the personnel ready?"
"Everything is ready. As per the boss's requirements, there are thirteen people in total, all of whom are top-notch experts and absolutely loyal."
Tommy nodded.
He stood up and walked to the desk in the room.
The drawers on the desk were locked.
Tommy took a key out of his pocket and turned the lock.
Tommy opened the drawer and took out a photograph.
The photo was taken from the angle of a person standing outside a window, looking through the window glass.
Inside, Walter was sitting at a dining table, holding a glass of wine, talking to the man opposite him.
Walter looked beaming and was in a great mood.
I don't know who slipped this photo under Tommy's door early this morning.
Tommy recognized the person sitting opposite Walter instantly when he saw the photo.
It's Clay from Black Sails.
……
Last night.
After Rodney dealt with old Bob, he asked Lyndon which people he planned to target for his counter-espionage plan.
Lyndon felt that the biggest conflict was between Cyril and Violet, so he could start by dealing with them.
"However, if you want to kill Cyril, you still need to find a way to get rid of his henchmen."
Lyndon leaned against the wall, his eyes lowered in thought.
At that moment, Rodney took out a photograph.
He handed the photo to Lyndon: "You can take a look at this."
Lyndon took the photo and glanced at it.
"This looks like one of Cyril's henchmen."
Lyndon brought the photo closer; the image wasn't actually very clear.
"Who's that person opposite him? I don't know them."
After careful examination, Lyndon finally confirmed that he had no memory of that person in his mind.
Rodney explained to Lyndon, "The man in the photo is Walter, Cyril's number one henchman, and sitting across from him is the head of our Black Sail Society."
Upon hearing this, Lyndon immediately sensed something was amiss.
How could Walter, Cyril's top enforcer, be sitting with Black Sail members, drinking and laughing?
In response to Lyndon's doubts, Rodney explained, "The higher-ups at Black Sails noticed Arthur's unusual behavior a long time ago and have been keeping an eye on him. Walter despises Arthur, a treacherous and opportunistic person. In addition, Cyril is keeping Arthur's affairs highly confidential, and Walter is unaware of the implications, so we easily obtained information about Arthur's movements from him."
"So that night, you followed Arthur's carriage because of him?"
Lyndon said, holding up the photo.
Rodney nodded and said, "That's right. As for this photo, we originally intended to stir up internal conflict within Cyril after everything was over, hoping to cut off one of his arms."
After learning the whole story, Lyndon couldn't help but sigh, "We were thinking the same thing on this point."
Lyndon thought for a moment, then, holding the photograph, asked, "Could I borrow this photo for a moment?"
"What do you want to do?"
Lyndon smiled slightly: "To do something big."
……
Tommy stared at the photograph in his hand in the room. When he first saw it that morning, he had guessed that Arthur's death was inextricably linked to Walter.
Logically speaking, if Tommy had chosen to hand the photo over to Cyril, Walter would certainly have died.
Cyril might then stop indiscriminately killing innocent people.
This seems to be the best solution.
But would Tommy do that?
He will not.
Because Walter was his brother.
Tommy originally intended to keep this a secret for Walter.
But he figured it out: if someone could slip this photo through their own door, then they could slip it through Cyril's door too.
This matter will eventually be exposed.
Besides, even if he chooses to betray Walter, will Cyril really end the purge?
What about those innocent subordinates who died in the purge?
Cyril might casually say sorry, but he probably won't even offer a simple apology.
He wouldn't even feel guilty or sad.
Did my brother risk his life for Cyril only to end up like this?
Tommy was very unwilling.
So he decided to do something big, something that might lead to his demise, but he still wanted to do it.
Because he wanted to seek justice for his brothers who had died unjustly.
After figuring this out, Tommy began to gather people.
He wanted to kill Cyril and end it all.
"Get the brothers ready. Listen for my gunshot. Once it rings out, begin the operation."
Tommy calmly gave instructions to his subordinates.
"Yes, boss!"
"Also..." Tommy thought for a moment, then instructed his subordinates, "Before the operation, have someone send Walter away. I don't want him to be in this bar during the operation."
"Understood, boss. I'll arrange it right away."
Tommy nodded in satisfaction after hearing this.
He struck the match, and the match head instantly burst into a blazing flame.
Tommy held the photo close to the burning match, letting the flames devour it.
The photograph fell onto the table, and under the scorching heat of the flames, it gradually curled up and turned into a pile of ashes.
