Chapter 111 A Hidden Path, A Narrow Escape
The hunter's words rekindled Cecilia's hope, and she excitedly asked, "Really?"
The hunter nodded, dipped his finger into the teacup, and then casually slid his finger across the wooden table. Soon, he had drawn a simple topographical map.
"Look, head east, there's a large warehouse there." The hunter pointed to the still-wet patches of water and described the location to the two. "The Dreamweavers dug a tunnel there to transport the materials for 'Sleeping Kiss' from the city, which leads directly to the outskirts of Dark Oak Forest."
After the hunter finished speaking, he added in a hoarse voice, "However, precisely because that place is important, the guild leader has assigned a large number of troops to guard it. If you want to leave through there, you'll have to find a way to lure some of the people away."
But after hearing this, the two of them were in a dilemma.
Cecilia clutched her chest and looked at Lyndon beside her, asking hesitantly, "How can we distract the guards?"
Lyndon thought for a moment and offered a suggestion: "Perhaps I can make a commotion so you can sneak in during the chaos."
But Cecilia quickly rejected the proposal.
Her reasoning was that if they were to attract attention, they would inevitably be targeted by the enemy, and once Lyndon was trapped, he would become a lamb to the slaughter.
Even though she attracted the attention of some of the guards, Cecilia still had to face the rest of the guards alone. She was not good at fighting to begin with, let alone now that she was injured.
Therefore, it would be difficult for either of them to escape unscathed, regardless of who acts as the bait.
The two argued about this issue until dusk, but were unable to make a decision.
Along the way, Lyndon also put forward many ideas, but Cecilia always managed to find the fatal flaws in them.
"If it really can't be done, I'll go!"
Lyndon slammed his hand on the table and suddenly stood up.
He walked to the window and looked at the dim twilight outside, his patience already almost gone.
Cecilia, unable to come up with a solution, also felt a surge of frustration.
The two stood back to back, hands supporting their heads, in silence.
At that moment, the hunter returned to the house from outside.
To prevent the Dream Weavers from finding him, the hunter would scout the surrounding area every now and then, so that even if his whereabouts were exposed, he could discover it in time and escape immediately.
As soon as he entered the room, he sensed the strange atmosphere inside.
"Is there still no solution?"
The hunter took off his old coat and asked.
But after the words were spoken, neither of them immediately replied.
After a long while, perhaps Cecilia felt it was impolite, she finally said, "No."
The hunter nodded upon hearing this. He didn't say anything, but simply sat quietly in the chair, his cloudy eyes shifting between the two men.
Inside the house, the fire crackled and popped in the stove.
Suddenly, the hunter asked Cecilia, "What will happen after you get out?"
Cecilia thought for a moment: "We'll come back and make those bastards pay for it."
Lyndon had already told Cecilia about the evil deeds of the Dreamweavers.
Therefore, as a traditional and old-fashioned priest, Cecilia naturally despised such behavior.
In particular, the actions of the president of the Dream Weavers Association, who blasphemed against the gods and exploited and deceived believers, enraged her.
"Those bastards despise the gods, they should be hanged to comfort the poor villagers."
Cecilia spoke, her indignation growing stronger.
The hunter's gaze suddenly became unfocused as he looked at Cecilia's fiercely righteous expression.
These words resonated most intensely within him, even though he had now buried that thought deep within his heart.
What is he persisting in by hiding in these ruins day after day?
Perhaps he should have died long ago.
He died on the night his family and fellow villagers suffered misfortune.
It was hatred that kept him alive until now.
Hatred for Wiltling, hatred for the Sutcliff family, hatred for the Dream Weavers, and hatred for himself.
The hunter slowly turned his head to look at Lyndon.
Lyndon seemed to sense the intense gaze from behind, and he turned around to meet the hunter's eyes.
It was the first time he had ever seen such pure eyes.
Lyndon immediately looked away, avoiding the hunter's eyes.
Upon seeing this, Cecilia called out to Lyndon.
So Lyndon said calmly, "I will come back here and do what I do best: revenge, to settle the score for the man who has been hunted down all this time."
Two people, two completely different answers.
But the hunter smiled broadly upon hearing this.
He seemed to have finally gotten the answer he wanted.
The hunter walked to the bedside, lifted the bed board, and took out a flattened piece of leather from underneath.
Then, the hunter took a small piece of charcoal from the stove.
He was drawing something on the leather with charcoal.
"Listen up, you two. I'm drawing the route through that tunnel now. You must follow this map, or you'll get lost."
The hunter's voice was deep, and the charcoal in his hand quickly traced crooked lines on the hide.
Once the drawing was finished, he placed the leather in front of the two men.
"Tonight, all you do is sneak around there and hide. Once you see the fire start to the west, rush into the warehouse immediately!"
"Fire?" Cecilia pressed.
"Fire," the hunter said, then stuffed the hide into Cecilia's hand.
The night was as dark as ink, and the rustling of insects carried on the wind to Lyndon and Cecilia's ears.
Following the hunter's instructions, they hid on the slope near the warehouse.
From above, a low, dilapidated warehouse was faintly visible in the moonlight.
Two lamps were lit on the warehouse door, and several people wearing cloaks leaned against the door under the lamps.
"Hey! I must say, it's really cool tonight!" said the cloaked man with a bulbous nose.
"Yes! Perfect for sleeping." Another cloaked figure, looking rather dull, gave a comical big yawn.
That made everyone else burst into laughter.
"Alright, you guys keep an eye on things, I'm going in for a drink." The man with the red nose said, pushing open the door and walking into the warehouse.
Lyndon and Cecilia witnessed everything from a distance.
"Do you really think there will be a fire?" Cecilia asked softly.
"Let's wait and see," Lyndon said, his eyes fixed on the west.
Time ticked by, and suddenly, a loud bang came from the west.
Almost in the blink of an eye, a huge fire shot into the sky!
Flames shot into the night sky, tearing a hole in the black curtain.
Thick smoke billowed, and the sky was dyed an eerie dark red by the fire.
"Fire! Fire!"
The cloaked man guarding the warehouse panicked when he saw the fire.
He hurriedly pounded on the warehouse door.
Hearing the commotion, the people inside the warehouse rushed out.
Upon seeing the fire, the man with the bulbous nose wailed, "Oh no! The raw material warehouse! It's all destroyed! Quick, put out the fire!"
With his roar, all the guards of the warehouse rushed toward the flames.
Watching those people walk away, Lyndon and Cecilia realized that this was their opportunity!
"Walk!"
Lyndon let out a low growl and dragged Cecilia toward the warehouse.
The remaining guards, seeing the two strangers rushing towards them, were about to attack when they were pierced through the heart by the spear in Lyndon's hand.
Lyndon drew his spear and kicked open the warehouse door.
The place was completely empty.
Lyndon quickly scanned the surroundings and saw a heavy wooden plank on the ground.
The two men worked together to lift the wooden plank, revealing a huge hole underneath.
"You go down first." Lyndon told Cecilia to go down into the hole first, while he would stay behind to cover the rear.
The tunnel was narrow and winding, with torches hanging on both sides for illumination.
In the darkness, the two groped their way forward through the tunnel, following the map given to them by the hunter.
Along the way, they sometimes encounter members of the Dream Weavers Society.
But Lyndon always manages to take the life of the other person first.
Cecilia watched Lyndon's practiced killing technique and couldn't help but sigh, "I really want to know what kind of person you are."
But Lyndon said in a flat tone, "I'm just an unlucky person."
The two continued walking, and after an unknown amount of time, the tunnel ahead began to climb upwards, and the air became noticeably fresher.
Finally, they emerged from the tunnel.
A cool night breeze, carrying leaves, blew against the two who had escaped.
The stars twinkled overhead, and the cool moon shone in the west.
"We escaped!" Cecilia gasped for breath of fresh air, feeling for the first time how vibrant life could be.
"Let's go, let's go somewhere first."
Lyndon determined his location, and then the two of them walked hand in hand in the vast darkness of the night.
