Chapter 826 Search Team
A small team is speeding across the vast wilderness. ▲Search "Like" to read more▲
The squad consisted of seventeen people, each clad in heavy, retro-style armor that resembled oversized medieval knight's armor. However, judging from their agile movements, the faintly visible mechanical structure within the armor, and the hissing sounds from their joints, it could be deduced that they were wearing powered armor. Nevertheless, the intricate and shimmering magical runes on the armor suggested that its power source was not some "scientific" energy source like diesel or electricity.
As for weapons, the captain carried a massive sword as thick as a door panel on his back. However, the blade was not made of a single piece of steel; intricate magical runes and interlocking gears could be seen on the spine, while the edges on both sides shone with a pale blue light.
Of the remaining soldiers, five were equipped with mechanical crossbows, five with spears, five with one-handed swords and shields, and one with a short-handled hammer, but judging from the glittering gems inlaid on the hammerhead, it was probably not intended for direct attacks.
This is a combat team with a combination of different military branches and a clear division of labor.
However, none of them were carrying any firearms.
Perhaps the relevant technology simply hasn't been developed...
The squad moved quickly. With their mechanical armor, they moved at a speed comparable to off-road vehicles across the rugged wasteland, and soon arrived at a town.
To be precise, it was the ruins of a town.
Everywhere here are charred ruins. From the collapsed and broken stones, you can vaguely make out many exquisite and intricate sculptures, even with a bit of Rococo style. It is evident that this was once a very wealthy and prosperous town.
But now, all that's left is scorched earth.
The captain gave a hand signal, and the squad dispersed into several groups and scattered into the ruins of the town, seemingly searching for something.
Soon, one of the crossbowmen made a discovery, pulling a slightly deformed safe from among the rubble. He shouted to his companions, and quickly the others gathered around.
"Is this it, Captain?" the crossbowman asked.
The captain opened his heavy mask, revealing a rugged and handsome face. He pressed a button on the side of his helmet, and a round lens popped out and fixed itself in front of his left eye.
After examining the safe carefully for two seconds through the lens, the captain raised his hand and wiped away the dust and rust, revealing a beautifully crafted monster pattern with a hawk's head and a lion's body.
"The griffin emblem, there's no mistake, it belongs to the Griffin family! This is exactly what His Majesty the Duke wants!"
Having found what they were looking for, the team members were overjoyed. The captain took out a white cloth, packed it away, and slung it over his shoulder. Just as he was about to leave, a soldier in the team wielding a short hammer suddenly warned, "There's a hellish aura!"
Before he finished speaking, the gem on his hammerhead began to glow red.
"This brightness... is it a fifth-tier demon?" The captain exclaimed in shock, putting on his helmet and ordering, "Everyone, evacuate the town at top speed!"
But his order was a step too late. Not far away, an abandoned building suddenly exploded, and dazzling flames shot into the sky. A moment later, a huge monster emerged from the flames.
The monster was roughly humanoid, over five meters tall, and entirely red, covered in irregular scales. It was extremely large and had two horns on its head, a ferocious face, four fangs protruding from its lips, two thick arms hanging down past its knees, and a heavy cleaver almost as tall as itself slung over its shoulders. Its legs were like those of a wild beast, with a pair of black and hard hooves.
The moment the captain saw the monster, he raised his greatsword, and the other team members also drew their weapons, ready for battle.
"Don't be so nervous." The giant monster let out a grotesque laugh. "I just haven't smelled the scent of a living person in a long time, so I came to take a look." As he spoke, he stretched out his purple snake head and licked his dry, ugly lips.
"A Berserker, a fifth-tier demon, skilled in melee combat, its only spells are fireballs and charging..." The captain looked at the enormous monster, mentally assessing its strength: "With good teamwork, we should be able to kill it!"
With that thought in mind, he raised his right hand, ready to make an attack gesture.
"Why aren't you saying anything?" The enormous, berserk demon chuckled. "You wouldn't be plotting how to kill me, would you?"
As it spoke, the enormous monster swung its greatsword, and a row of red teleportation arrays appeared around it. Accompanied by splattering blood and flames, demons of various shapes emerged from them and surrounded the team.
Upon seeing this, the captain was shocked: "Mass teleportation? This isn't a Berserker's ability! This is impossible!"
"Who said this is my ability?" The berserker slammed his machete into the ground, and blood-red demonic runes appeared on the filthy blade.
"It's the power of that knife..." The captain understood the key point, and the team members behind him spontaneously formed a circle, protecting the soldier using the gem-forged hammer in the middle, with their weapons facing outwards.
"Give up the struggle!" the berserk demon roared with laughter. "The weakest demons here are at least third-tier, and their numbers outnumber yours several times over. You have no chance of winning!"
As he spoke, the berserker opened its massive maw, and flames rose from the depths of its throat, causing the surrounding demons to stir restlessly.
"Wait!" the captain shouted, plunging his greatsword into the ground and taking out a golden token with a griffin on the front and a huge demon on the back.
"We are from Griffin City!" the captain shouted. "Griffin City and Demon King Odeross have a non-aggression pact; you cannot attack us!"
"Oh?" The berserker shut his mouth and raised his hand to suppress the horde of demons that were about to attack.
"Lord Auderos values contracts above all else, and as his subordinates, we will naturally abide by them," the Berserker chuckled. "However, this is not within the territory of Griffin City; humans, you are not in the protected area!"
"We are a supplies scavenging team!" the captain continued. "The contract stipulates that Griffin City can send out no more than ten supplies scavenging teams per month, with a team size not exceeding twenty people. They can search for supplies outside the protected area. We are protected by the contract!"
"Oh? Let me think about it..." The berserker made a gesture of recalling, then laughed, "Yes, there is such a rule... However, the supplementary instructions also mention that you can only bring back essential supplies. If the search team is discovered by the demons, we have the right to inspect and confiscate any prohibited items!"
As he spoke, he looked at the package behind the captain: "So, let me see what you found?"
