Journey to the West: Starting with the True Lord of the Pure Land
Chapter 241 Recognizing Brothers and Fathers, Forgiving the Benefactor
Your portable library contains more than ten thousand volumes.
Upon hearing Jin Chanzi's words, Chen Jiao remained calm and simply asked, "I would like to hear the details."
Jin Chanzi's voice was calm and casual, as if he were discussing something ordinary, when he suddenly asked:
"Does the True Lord know that in the past, when the World-Honored One was preaching at Jetavana Monastery, he predicted that Maitreya Bodhisattva would become a Buddha?"
Chen Jiao nodded and said, "I've heard a little about it. It's a fact known to all in the Three Realms."
Jin Chanzi did not stop walking, but his voice became more distant, as if he were tracing back to a distant time.
"At that time, Venerable Upali stepped forward from under the Buddha's seat, bowed in reverence, and, having some doubts, directly asked the Buddha about them."
It is said that he possesses the body of an ordinary person, and has not severed all defilements. Although he has renounced worldly life, he does not cultivate meditation, nor does he sever his afflictions.
Jin Chanzi's gaze swept over a vigorous ancient pine tree by the roadside, its branches and leaves dappled with light and shadow.
"Upali was strict in observing the precepts and judged his conduct by the precepts, hence this doubt."
The Buddha once said that although Maitreya Bodhisattva does not practice meditation, he still experiences afflictions.
However, his aspiration is vast, his compassion is samadhi, and his vow to suffer on behalf of all sentient beings has never wavered throughout countless eons.
"Because of this great compassion and firm vow, he received the prediction of his future Buddhahood."
He paused slightly at this point before continuing:
"The three studies of morality, concentration, and wisdom are like the three legs of a tripod; none can be missing."
However, people have different innate capacities and different paths to enlightenment. Some people enter into concentration through precepts and develop wisdom from concentration; others are guided by vows and take loving-kindness as their foundation, seeing afflictions as enlightenment and birth and death as nirvana.
Different paths, but all lead to the treasure.
Chen Jiao was naturally aware of this case.
Upali was known for his strict adherence to the precepts, and his sharp questions directly addressed the state of practice manifested by Maitreya Bodhisattva and the perceptions of the world.
The Buddha's reply affirmed that Maitreya Bodhisattva had cultivated virtuous roots for a long time, his mind was unwavering, and with the power of the Samadhi of Compassion, he would become a Buddha in the future and widely liberate sentient beings.
Chen Jiao's thoughts shifted slightly, realizing that Jin Chanzi's mention of this old story was not without reason, and there might be a deeper meaning behind it.
Is it a reminder of the unique characteristics of Maitreya Bodhisattva's foundation and path of practice?
Or perhaps this incident serves to subtly point out the differing opinions within Buddhism regarding this future Buddha?
Chen Jiao glanced sideways at Jin Chanzi.
The Buddhist disciple had a compassionate and serene expression, with clear eyes, as if he were simply reciting an ancient scripture, without joy or anger, praise or blame.
Chen Jiao hesitated for a moment before answering slowly:
"My knowledge of Buddhist anecdotes is shallow. However, the wisdom of the Buddha and the Master is seen through the three lifetimes, and they can predict the future by observing the circumstances, which is beyond the comprehension of ordinary people."
The path of the Mahayana Bodhisattva is vast and inconceivable. With the Samadhi of loving-kindness, one takes on the suffering of all beings. Such vows and practices are truly beyond the reach of ordinary people.
As a mere novice in the mystical arts, I dare not presume to fathom the profound meaning within. I only know that each should follow their own path and cultivate their own conduct.
His words were watertight, avoiding any connection to either side, and he only praised the perfect harmony of Buddhism.
After hearing this, Jin Chanzi turned his head and gave Chen Jiao a deep look, a faint smile seemingly flashing across his eyes.
It seemed to praise his appropriate response, and also seemed to understand his cautious mindset.
He clasped his hands together and said, "Excellent. What the True Lord sees is also the Middle Way."
The Dharma is like the ocean, accepting all streams; the Buddha's fruit is lofty, rejecting even the smallest cause. This Dharma is equal, without high or low; it is simply that which resonates with one's own capacity that truly attains it.
He then stopped talking about the topic, as if it were just a casual remark.
Jin Chanzi then asked, "At the previous Dharma assembly, the True Lord's statement that 'Buddha-nature is inherent, and enlightenment leads to Buddhahood' was incisive and pointed directly to the source of the mind."
Upon hearing this, the humble monk was delighted and pondered deeply.
"I wonder if the True Lord has any further elaboration on this Dharma?"
When this was mentioned, Jin Chanzi looked pleased.
This is quite different from the calm and indifferent attitude when he mentioned the past; it is clear that he genuinely enjoys this path.
Seeing that he was no longer fixated on the matter of Maitreya, Chen Jiao was happy to go along with it.
They then discussed the connection between sudden enlightenment and gradual cultivation, and the application of mind and skill, as they walked and talked.
Jin Chanzi was deeply versed in Buddhist teachings, especially in the principles of "directly pointing to the human mind" and "seeing one's true nature and becoming a Buddha."
The two traveled and discussed along the way, their conversation occasionally sparking insightful remarks and profound truths. One had an iron will to follow the Tao, while the other was deeply versed in Buddhist teachings. They seemed to be having a very pleasant conversation.
Before we knew it, we had arrived at the foot of Mount Ling.
The eaves and brackets of Yuzhen Temple are faintly visible in the evening glow in the distance.
Many monks from Lingshan, who had heard the news, stopped to watch from afar.
Everyone wanted to see the true form of the Radiant Heavenly Pure Dharma True Lord, who had astonished everyone at the Wondrous Lotus Assembly on Mount Ling and politely declined the Bodhisattva position.
Jin Chanzi and Chen Jiao stopped under a sal tree by the roadside.
"Even after seeing you off for a thousand miles, we must eventually part ways."
Jin Chanzi clasped his hands together and smiled, saying, "True Lord's insightful words are thought-provoking."
If fate allows, I will seek your guidance again in the future. May your journey be successful and your path peaceful and healthy.
Chen Jiao returned the greeting with his hands clasped:
"Thank you for your farewell, Venerable One. I will always remember our conversation. May you attain enlightenment soon."
Before the Jade True Temple, auspicious clouds lingered, and soldiers stood solemnly in formation.
Fei Peng, Hu Lei She Qi General, and other generals of the Thunder Palace had already prepared their troops and beasts, and stood solemnly in the open space in front of the temple. Their armor was bright and they were completely silent, waiting for the True Lord to return.
On the other side, Li Jing and his son Nezha had also mustered their heavenly troops, their banners fluttering. Although they had suffered some losses in the Battle of Wujin Mountain, they had now reorganized their army.
Beside her stood a slender figure, none other than Bai Susu, the golden-nosed, white-haired rat spirit.
Dressed in simple white, his eyes held a mixture of fear and reverence, as if he had survived a calamity.
"Little demon Bai Susu thanks the three benefactors."
Thanks to the Buddha's mercy, the intercession of the True Lord and Elder Jin Chanzi, and the mercy of Li Tianwang and the Third Prince who spared my life, sparing me from my sins and allowing me to descend to the mortal realm to cultivate.
This kindness and virtue are as vast as heaven and as deep as earth; this humble demon will never forget them.
Her voice was clear and melodious, filled with sincere gratitude, and she bowed deeply after speaking.
Upon hearing this, Nezha laughed and said, "Even a small creature like a mouse can recognize kindness and repay kindness; that is quite remarkable."
Now that you have descended to the mortal realm, you must remember this lesson, find a quiet place, diligently cultivate yourself, accumulate merit, and refrain from causing any more trouble, lest you waste this opportunity.
Bai Susu kowtowed repeatedly, choking back tears, and said, "I will always remember the teachings of the Third Prince and never forget them!"
I am already incredibly lucky to have survived this time, how could I dare to make any more mistakes?
The little demon will surely find a quiet mountain wilderness to seclude himself and cultivate diligently, reciting scriptures by day and repenting for his past transgressions by night, doing good deeds and never daring to do evil again.
This humble demon's cultivation is shallow; I have nothing to repay you with.
The only way is to set up memorial tablets for the three benefactors, burn incense daily, and offer sacrifices morning and evening, praying that they may enjoy eternal bliss and long life.
Li Jing, holding the pagoda in his hand, stroked his beard and smiled upon hearing this, nodding slightly, his expression showing considerable satisfaction.
"If you can think this way, then you will not have wasted this opportunity. Do your best."
Although he disliked this demon, the other party was so grateful, and it was Buddha himself who had pardoned him, so he was naturally happy to show some of the demeanor of a heavenly king.
Chen Jiao had been standing quietly to the side, his expression indifferent. Seeing Bai Susu looking over, his gaze lingered on her face for a moment before he slowly spoke:
"Memorial tablets and incense offerings are all external things. Do not become attached to them, lest they become an obstacle."
Do not mistake gratitude for loyalty and righteousness, or give rise to other thoughts. You are not my disciple, nor am I your father or brother.
One's own life, one's own spiritual practice, one's own merit. Remember this saying, for this is true repayment.
These words, like a gentle breeze, swept away any warmth, leaving only a clear sense of morality.
Bai Susu's delicate body trembled slightly, a trace of sadness flashed in her eyes, and then she whispered:
"The True Lord's golden words have awakened me from my dream. This humble demon understands. I will heed the True Lord's teachings!"
After bowing, she curtsied to everyone, took one last look at the majestic sacred mountain, and then turned into a faint white shadow, gracefully disappearing into the vast sea of clouds. He went to seek a pure place to atone for his sins, cultivate himself, and accumulate merit.
Then Li Jing and his son mustered their troops, beat the heavenly drums, rode on auspicious clouds, and with banners waving, marched in a grand procession towards the South Heavenly Gate.
In front of Yuzhen Temple, only Chen Jiao and Lei's generals remained.
Upon seeing its master, the Xie Zhi let out a low roar, its four hooves lightly stomping, its body radiating a dignified aura and faint lightning.
Chen Jiao flipped himself onto the Xie Zhi and settled himself in place.
"Walk."
Chen Jiao gazed upon the vast landscape of Xiniu Hezhou, his voice calm yet imposing.
"Follow the law!"
The generals responded in unison, their voices resounding through the heavens.
Chen Jiao rode a Xie Zhi in front, with Fei Peng following closely behind, and Thunder Gods such as Hu Lei She Qi and Qian Tian Fu Mo guarding him on the left and right.
Thunderclouds rolled, lightning flashed, and their imposing power was overwhelming; in the blink of an eye, they were gone from the Ling Mountain territory.
…………
…………
Meanwhile, Bai Susu left the Ling Mountain region and headed straight for Xiniu Hezhou.
Although she was pardoned, she was allowed to cultivate in the mortal realm, but she knew her own limitations.
She was a golden-nosed white-haired rat who attained enlightenment. She was originally of the utmost yin nature, pure yin without yang, and was ultimately lacking on the path of cultivation.
To achieve success in spiritual practice, one must find a place that subtly harmonizes Yin and Yang, and the harmony of Dragon and Tiger, and proceed gradually; this is the right path.
She then concealed herself above Xiniu Hezhou, descended from the clouds, and searched carefully.
The mountains rose and fell, rivers crisscrossed, and there were places where demonic energy lingered, places where Buddha's light shone, densely populated cities, and wild and treacherous marshes.
She patiently and tirelessly sensed the dangers of the mountains and valleys, and before she knew it, some time had passed.
On this day, they arrived at a certain place.
The peaks reach the azure sky, their summits touching the heavens. Tigers and leopards roam in formation, while deer and roe deer dart through the thickets.
In sunny spots, rare flowers and fragrant herbs bloom; in shady areas, the snow and ice stubbornly refuse to melt. Rugged and steep mountains, sheer cliffs and precipices rise majestically. Towering peaks rise amidst deep ravines and winding bends.
The pines are lush and green, the rocks are gleaming, and passersby are startled at the sight. The woodcutter has vanished without a trace, and the herb-gathering fairy has disappeared without a trace.
It is indeed a treacherous mountain area.
Bai Susu observed with her keen eyes and saw that the terrain here was quite peculiar, with the mountain ranges revealing hidden secrets and faintly showing signs of the convergence of earth veins.
A thought struck her, so she descended from the clouds and began to investigate carefully.
This exploration filled him with secret delight.
The mountain was originally called Trapped Sky Mountain. It was steep and had deep caves, but the earth's energy was quite active.
Even more remarkably, a thousand miles to the southeast of the mountains, there is a country inhabited entirely by women, called the Western Liang Women's Kingdom, a land of extreme yin.
More than a hundred miles to the northwest, there is another country called the Poor Woman Country, where yang is more prevalent than yin.
This mountain is situated between the two places, with the earth's veins secretly connected, and the earth's energy converging and flowing here. It is the wonderful place for cultivation that she has been dreaming of!
"Wonderful! This place is truly a blessed land bestowed upon me for cultivation!"
Bai Susu was overjoyed. Being a mouse by nature, she saw that this place was dangerous and deep, so she made hand gestures and chanted incantations, using her supernatural powers to burrow into the depths of the ground.
But then she swayed, transforming into a streak of white light, and suddenly disappeared into the rocks, sinking to an unknown depth. Only after a radius of over three hundred miles did she feel the vast emptiness around her.
Deep within this place, she used her magic to carve out a cave, excavating east and west, with a south corridor and a north hall, creating a winding and secluded cave.
It was named Bottomless Pit.
She also enlightened some clever little demons in the vicinity—mountain foxes, wild rabbits, flower snakes, and rats—to serve as maids and servants, attending to their daily needs.
From then on, Bai Susu settled down in the bottomless cave of Trapped Sky Mountain and began to cultivate in seclusion.
It is:
Seeking immortality after escaping tribulation on Mount Ling, I find hidden mysteries within the Void Mountain.
Do not say that there is no sun or moon underground, for yin and yang are hidden in the darkness.
After settling in the Bottomless Cave of Trapped Sky Mountain, Bai Susu cleaned and sprinkled water in her meditation room and set up a carved lacquer altar with a dragon-shaped opening.
The table was covered with yellow silk, and incense burner, candlesticks, and a vase were all present.
She then personally and devoutly carved three memorial tablets.
On the left side is written: "The position of our revered father, Heavenly King Li"; on the right side is written: "The position of our revered elder brother, Third Prince Nezha".
The central side, however, has a base of pure gold with characters filled in with cinnabar, making it the most solemn and eye-catching.
The inscription reads: "The seat of Lord Chen, the Merciful and Benevolent Lord of the Pure Law."
After the memorial tablet was set up, Bai Susu lit three sticks of fine sandalwood incense and inserted them into the incense burner. The smoke curled up and swirled around in front of the memorial tablet.
She knelt down gracefully, gazing at the golden memorial tablet in the center, her heart filled with unease.
She remembered clearly that Chen Jiao Zhenjun said before he left: "Memorial tablets and incense are all external things."
Clearly, he disliked such empty formalities.
However, the grace of being saved and the kindness of being pardoned are as vast as the heavens and as deep as the earth. She, a mere little mouse demon, has no way to repay them. All she can do is offer this heartfelt devotion day and night.
She concealed the True Lord's name, referring to him only as "Lord Chen," out of caution, lest she offend him.
I silently pray that the True Lord will not blame me.
A heart full of trepidation is contained within these wisps of incense smoke.
Bai Susu remained anxiously inside the cave.
Li Jing and his son Nezha, leading the heavenly army, rode on auspicious clouds, and were approaching the Southern Heavenly Gate.
But what one sees is a myriad of golden rays rolling like red rainbows, a thousand auspicious wisps spewing purple mist, crafted from deep blue glass, adorned with bright and precious jade, this is the Southern Heavenly Gate.
As the father and son were walking, they suddenly felt a pure yet faint power of incense offerings emanating from the lower realm and enveloping them.
This aspiration is pure and sincere, without any distracting thoughts; it is clearly born from a genuine offering.
The two ideas are "respected father" and "respected elder brother".
Nezha, with his keen senses, raised an eyebrow and revealed a strange expression.
He naturally sensed that the source of this wish was Bai Susu, whom he had just parted ways with.
Nezha glanced at Li Jing beside him and said, "Father, this Bai Susu... she actually..."
Li Jing stroked his long beard, raised his hand slightly, and stopped Nezha from speaking.
His expression remained unchanged, but a faint smile flickered in his eyes as he spoke slowly:
"My son, there's no need for further words. She is a grateful and thoughtful person."
The offerings of incense and prayers are the sincere wishes of all beings, and cannot be faked.
Since you are so sincere, acknowledging me as your father and respecting you as your elder brother… so be it.”
He paused, his tone quite magnanimous and broad-minded:
"I will take this daughter as my goddaughter. My son, you will have another god-sister. If she achieves enlightenment in the future, it will be a wonderful story of good karma."
Upon hearing this, Nezha blinked, pondered for a moment, and decided it didn't matter.
Bai Susu looked pitiful, and her remorse seemed genuine. Having multiple nominal sworn sisters didn't harm him at all.
He nodded slightly and said, "Since Father says so, I will obey."
Seeing that Nezha had no objection, Li Jing's smile deepened.
However, he was very shrewd and forcibly suppressed his anger.
Firstly, Bai Susu has been pardoned by Buddha and is under the supervision of Jin Chanzi. If she can truly achieve enlightenment in the future...
His godfather naturally felt proud and gained a good reputation.
Secondly...
Li Jing's eyes flickered slightly.
Since Nezha is his elder brother, Bai Susu must also worship Jingfa Zhenjun as her elder brother.
If that's the case, wouldn't my godfather be a generation higher out of nowhere?
Thinking of this, Li Jing felt the auspicious clouds beneath his feet become lighter, but his face grew even more serious and solemn.
Holding the pagoda in his hand, head held high and chest out, he led his heavenly soldiers and generals, majestically heading towards the South Heavenly Gate.
