Transform into a human
Chapter 16 A Woman Without a Heart
After a brief moment of panic, Yue Lai quickly realized something was wrong. The display case he had just smashed had been restored to its original state, and a faint call came from the end of the exhibition hall.
It's not that Li disappeared; he was pulled to the third floor.
"What's going on? They turned me away just now, but now they're pulling me in..."
If he wasn't mistaken, the timeline where the battle took place was something that actually happened in the past, and that "historical research room" did indeed exist in the school's history. Then, during that night's exploration, it suffered some indescribable contamination and returned to "the past of the past".
If the second layer of pollution is like adding a drop of ink to clear water, then the third layer is like swimming naked in ink—thankfully, he's not human.
Yue Lai hesitated for a long time, but still decided to explore forward. After all, Li Neng was able to escape from the third floor earlier because Yue Lai was helping him outside, but now there was no one to help him!
There has to be a reason for bringing me in...
As he journeyed on, he witnessed once again the history since the founding of the War Academy. But every time he reached the old man holding up the portrait of the Siren Queen, the story would begin anew: the founding of the academy, the training of extraordinary individuals, the Battle of the Raging Waves, the capture of the Siren Queen, the beheading...
Finally, he stopped and sighed.
"You brought me in because you realized I'm one of your kind, right?"
The exhibition hall was empty, and there was no response.
Yue Lai continued talking to himself:
"Now I finally understand that the pollution of this history is much higher than I imagined, and even now I am still under the 'protection' of the school."
As a relic hunter, he was very familiar with this kind of method. Many of his peers were good at protecting some evil relics with "time", unlike him who relied entirely on the special nature of his original body to withstand it.
"This is what 'archaeologists' excel at, so where is the real history?"
With a sudden burst of evil intent, Yue Lai smashed the display window with a punch and gently touched the "Decapitation Picture." The Siren Queen's head opened its incredibly red lips and put his fingertip into her mouth.
His tongue slowly circled around the base of his fingers, the moist sensation gradually enveloping his entire body, and his vision was swallowed by darkness.
Suddenly, the sky lit up—a burning space carrier crashed down, illuminating the night. A sword pierced the queen's heart from behind, and also the infant in her arms. The old man took the sword hilt from the young man's hand and removed the queen's head, but he could not remove the crown no matter what he did.
Upon seeing this, Yue Lai's eyes were filled with a sea of blood, and two wet, slippery arms grew out of his ear canals, seemingly trying to gouge out his eyeballs.
But he persisted.
The reason is simple: the skill level of [Wandering Through Time] is growing at an astonishing rate!
Time in the extraordinary world is not linear; he is now truly in an ancient battlefield, where every fragment of history is a rare resource!
Although the upper limit for a slacker is locked, the art of slacking off is like a skilled brewer, transforming piles of grain into a small amount of fine brew, waiting for Yue Lai to drink it all when he needs it.
Yue Lai gritted his teeth, raised his knife, and severed the arm from his ear.
It hurts, it hurts so much! It feels like I've chopped off my own hand!
Although he couldn't see the images, he could finally hear the sounds. A cold female voice came from very close to him—the Queen's head was right next to his ear!
"To avenge... I'll give you *@power... "
"Follow...empty*)%¥empty..."
That smooth tongue seemed to enter his brain through his ear canal, and the mucus filled his skull. If it were a normal human, he would have gone crazy long ago!
Or perhaps the other party was attracted by his inhuman identity.
But he could no longer bear the "weight" of this history. If he stayed any longer, even if his physical body remained intact, his mind would go mad!
Fortunately, they managed to leave the other face outside.
In real history, Yue Lai was like a balloon that had been blown up. After a "pop," all that remained was a human skin. Meanwhile, the faces outside the painting gradually became fuller, and the shadows struggled to rise from the ground, eventually becoming real.
Yue Lai sorted out his muddled thoughts, and only after glancing out of the corner of his eye at the "brainless" Li still leaning against the intact display case did he breathe a sigh of relief:
"Finally back to reality..."
"Huh, what's this in my hand...?"
He was clutching a shard of glass in his palm, covered with dazzling inscriptions.
Yue Lai could feel the four methods of the prodigal son pulsating wildly, urging him to swallow them.
It's a prodigal son's cipher, and at least of the caliber of a courtesan!
The so-called "cipher" is actually the writing system possessed by the civilizations that mastered the Twelve Talents Path before humans. Humans took away their innate talents and authority and then used their writing system for their own purposes.
The shards of glass that filled this piece of glass were once the Siren's writing.
"So, the Siren Queen was telling me about the ritual for becoming a Flower-Haired Scholar... But aren't rituals only for humans? Besides, I only heard four words."
"Follow the void..."
"Never mind that, let's put Li's heart back in first."
4 a.m., at the school hospital.
The doctor on night duty yawned. The time before dawn was the darkest and also the most tiring. Just as she was drifting off to sleep, she suddenly saw a boy carrying a girl covered in blood running into the emergency room.
"Doctor, please save her!"
The doctor's drowsiness vanished instantly. While pressing the alarm in the break room to wake the attending physician who had been dozing off, he anxiously asked:
"What's wrong with her!?"
Yue Lai placed his hand on his heart, and Xie Xin reluctantly spat out Li's heart:
"My friend's heart was accidentally dislodged. Can you help her put it back in?"
"Don't worry, student," the doctor wiped the drool from his mouth, "We have an anatomist in the hospital now, there won't be any problems!"
……
……
The next morning, Li slowly opened her eyes:
"It's an unfamiliar ceiling."
"Li, are you feeling better?"
"I think it's more distant for you to call me Hua Leisi."
"Okay, Li."
Li turned her head towards Yue Lai and said softly, "I just remembered that you ripped my heart out. Looks like the deception has been dispelled?"
With a sorrowful expression, Yue Lai said, "I'm sorry, Li. The situation was too critical at the time, so I had to sacrifice your heart to Xie Xin. After arriving at the hospital, we couldn't find a replacement in time, so... so..."
"What?"
"The only thing I could find was a pig demon's heart to put in it for you."
"But don't worry, the pig demon comes from the Shan Hai Star System. It's an experimental-grade product, even better than your original heart."
"Heh," Li chuckled lightly, as if she had seen through the illusions of the world, "Yue Lai, what sins did I commit in my past life?"
"Why do you ask that?"
"Come closer, I'll tell you a secret."
Yue Lai lowered his head, but unexpectedly, Li Yi swiftly grabbed his throat and pinned him down with a series of fluid grappling techniques. The policewoman roared:
"You have the nerve to ask me why! Let me tell you why!"
Li Qi, perched on Yue Lai's waist, punched him hard in the chest.
"I'll let you experience what it feels like to be completely open and honest!"
Just then, the door to the ward opened:
"Gentlemen, according to..."
The doctor looked at the two's positions and suddenly felt somewhat superfluous.
"It's nothing, you guys continue."
Then, with a "snap," the door slammed shut.
The nurse asked curiously, "Doctor, what's wrong?"
"The young couple is having a heart-to-heart talk, let's not disturb them."
Inside the ward, Li, already furious, finally exploded, grabbing a pillow and hurling it at Yue Lai.
"It's all your fault, all your fault! I'm doomed for life because of you!"
"Stop hitting it, I was just kidding. It's not a pig's heart, it's your original heart!"
"Of course I know it's my own heart. Do you think I can't tell if it's my own heart or not!"
"Then why did you hit me!"
"I've lost my heart. The first thing I saw when I opened my eyes was that you lied to me. Shouldn't I be punished?! I'm already in such a miserable state, and you still can't resist lying to me!"
Yue Lai was silent for a moment, then sincerely apologized: "I'm sorry, it was unintentional."
Li took a deep breath, tossed the pillow aside, and somehow felt that there was something more to what this guy was saying. Unexpectedly, Yue Lai continued:
"I forgot you're a heartless woman."
"?"
Li has completely gone mad!
……
……
Police hub, Singapore.
An elegantly decorated frigate slowly docked at the pier area, where Star Harbor branch manager Bryce and several other senior superintendents waited below the gangway.
A middle-aged man wearing a long gown came down.
Bryce stepped forward: "Chief Superintendent Baichuan."
"Grindelwald, you're still so polite."
Bryce whispered in Bai Chuan's ear, "Did they send only you?"
"I'm not enough on my own?" Bai Chuan smiled nonchalantly. "Wasn't it said that the suspect was just a charlatan?"
"If it were an ordinary thug, he would have been caught long ago. At least a senior superintendent would be no match for him."
Falken, standing behind him, lowered his head in shame, while Qingyan, standing beside him, patted his friend's shoulder with a smile.
Bai Chuan nodded slightly: "I'm not kidding you. This time, a senior superintendent was murdered at his doorstep, and an assistant director was furious. Naturally, he couldn't have sent just me."
Bryce whispered, "Is it that serious?"
Bai Chuan also lowered his voice: "You're out of luck, old classmate. Congresswoman Hua Lei was inspecting headquarters when the incident happened. How could the assistant director not be angry!"
"Wallace?"
"You remember now? Her daughter works at your branch. How could you not be worried after something like this happened? You'll be in for a world of hurt later."
"What are you two whispering about?"
Bryce looked up at the top of the gangway and saw a beautiful woman in a cheongsam slowly walking down.
He saluted and said, "Madam Member of Parliament."
"Just call me Wales. I'm visiting this time as a mother."
"Don't believe me." The superintendents thought to themselves.
Love Wares, a member of the Federal Imperial Parliament, is known as a "big shot" by ordinary people.
"How is Xiao Li? I suggested she go to work on the capital planet, but she insisted on staying in the place where she grew up."
Bryce turned to Falken, who felt like the sky had fallen the moment he saw Love. What was he supposed to say now? Your daughter either ran away with the suspect or was completely bewitched, and her fate is still unknown.
He stammered, "Li...she took leave because...because her first mission didn't go very smoothly, and she wanted to relax."
"Oh?" Love narrowed her eyes. "Officer Falken, my daughter has mentioned you. Taking leave is a normal thing, so why are you so nervous?"
"Because..." Falken would rather fight to the death with the thugs! Suddenly, a brilliant idea struck him. "She's in a relationship, but she's afraid to tell you!"
Love stared wide-eyed as if she had heard something unbelievable, her previous suspicion vanishing instantly:
"No wonder she wouldn't answer my calls; how did she even manage to find a boyfriend!"
"Is this a manifestation of our ancestors?"
The superintendents pretended they hadn't heard anything.
"Alright, let's not talk about my personal matters anymore, let's talk about the progress of the case."
"Madam Councilor, would you mind moving to the conference room?"
"No need, it's right here."
Her strong, independent woman demeanor was on full display.
Bai Chuan's inner monologue:
"Who just said they came in a private capacity?!"
Bryce could only provide updates on the case's progress at the dock:
"Three days ago, a firefight occurred in Wave City, resulting in the deaths of a young nobleman and a barbarian. The other two are a conman and a godfather, who are currently on the run."
"The barbarian died because of his deceitful ways, his honeyed words concealing a treacherous heart. Moreover, analysis shows that the traces at the scene of Ji Yungui's murder closely match those found there. Another police superintendent who was murdered also died from this kind of internal and external..."
"Let's not talk about these far-fetched theories," Love waved her hand. "I heard you've identified the suspect. Is there any news on his whereabouts?"
"Currently... no."
"Then let me tell you a clue. Last month, the University City Museum was robbed, and the artifact 'Dark Age Kirin Staff' disappeared. This evil relic can plant a dark heart in a person's body and then detonate it when evil thoughts arise."
"Isn't it similar to the method used to murder Superintendent Malfoy?"
Although extremely unwilling, Bryce had no choice but to make the promise in front of the congressman:
"I immediately contacted the local police to form a joint investigation team and allocated police forces to the university town to completely block off its entrances and exits, and then conducted a thorough search."
Love then nodded:
"I had met Consultant Ji a few times, but I never expected that we would be separated by death. He took me to pay my respects."
……
……
University Town, National University Hospital.
Inside the ward, Lou Wen and Weisswood kept smiling and behaving themselves.
"I'm so sorry, junior, the museum suddenly got foggy that night, and Weisswood and I called you for a long time but there was no response, so we had to leave to notify the police station."
"When we got back, there was no one there, and Weiswood and I got a severe scolding from the security department..."
"Hey, junior, did a ghost hit your eye?"
Yue Lai: "Indeed, she was a woman without a heart; she was terrifying."
Li clenched his fists.
Weiswood's face turned deathly pale: "There...there really are ghosts?"
Yue Lai said helplessly, "So you've never seen this before either."
"If everyone had seen it, it wouldn't be a legend," Lou Wen said excitedly. "So, junior, have you noticed anything? Have you communicated with the ghost?"
"Yes, a lot of it did leak out..."
Lou Xuechang's eyes seemed to be shining.
"In short, I speculate that the academy may have been an important battlefield back then, and the vengeful spirits of the siren have lingered for a long time."
"If we can confirm this, the three major campus legends might be resolved all at once!"
