Transform into a human
Chapter 15 Historical Research Office
In the university town, at the Federal National University Police Branch, Yue Lai and Li walked into an old-fashioned apartment building.
"I rented it for a year before, but I haven't been here since I graduated in June. Please make do with it."
Yue Lai looked around the one-bedroom apartment. Even Mo's room had several teddy bears, but Li's bedroom didn't have a single doll that most girls would like. Several travel magazines were scattered on the floor, and the walls were covered with all sorts of group photos.
Most often, he was with a girl with pink hair.
That was my mentor.
"Is she also an immortal being?"
"Yes, she is an Andic from the Chefu star system. She is very sensitive to time and history. Every one of them is a natural genius."
Li asked curiously:
"By the way, what race are you? I don't see any of the characteristics of any of the long-lived species."
Yue Lai pretended not to hear.
Li pouted in dissatisfaction, stretched, and habitually collapsed onto the bed.
She suddenly froze for a few seconds, then sat up as if nothing had happened—this was no ordinary thing, there was a man in her little apartment!
She quietly turned her head and realized that Yue Lai had been admiring the photo wall and hadn't seen her earlier outburst.
Why are you staring at my advisor like that?
"It's nothing, I just feel a sense of familiarity with the Andic people..."
Time passed in idle chatter and waiting, and the hands of the clock gradually reached midnight. As agreed, the two met Lou Wen and Weisswood in front of the Preparatory Society building.
"Based on the records of our predecessors in the Love and Kindness Group, different ghost clubs have their own areas of activity," Lou Wen explained as he led the way. "The one we're going to tonight is called the 'History Research Room,' and its activity location is in the school history museum. It's a relatively mild ghost club, well, relatively speaking."
"But the school history museum is closed now, isn't it?"
Then, speechless, Li watched as Lou Wen smugly placed a crystal card between his index and middle fingers: "I was ready all along!"
Hey! Is this really okay?!
Sure enough, following Yue Lai means he'll keep breaking the rules!
Yue Lai was unaware that he had suffered an undeserved calamity.
The four-person team sneakily swiped the swipe to open the side door of the school history museum, turned on the lights, and walked deeper into the exhibition hall.
Lou Wen seemed very familiar with the place, taking the lead and walking at the very front, introducing the area without turning his head:
"The central star system was chosen as the location of the capital region because of its pleasant living environment. However, it was not originally devoid of other intelligent races. For example, the original name of the police hub was Serena, and many sirens lived here."
Yue Lai looked at the display case, where a small skull was illuminated by a spotlight, behind which was an illustration of steam armor surrounding and killing a female siren, who was holding an even smaller siren in her arms.
That must be the owner of the skull.
"That's certainly outspoken."
"There's no way around it; pioneering always comes with bloodshed and slaughter. When the first colonists landed on Serena, they were warmly received by the sirens. They discussed with the sirens the possibility of jointly developing the Celestial Stable system, but the sirens refused to share their homeland with outsiders."
"And then came the war."
Yue Lai moved to the next display case, where a female siren wearing a blue crown stirred up a spatial tsunami in the void, tearing countless huge cruisers and even sky-covering space carriers into pieces.
"Especially as they advanced step by step from the outer reaches of the Celestial Stable to Serena, the sirens displayed astonishing fighting spirit on their home planet, which eventually turned into a protracted tug-of-war."
"The school's predecessor, the 'Serena War Academy,' was established in this environment, with the aim of systematically teaching some extraordinary individuals who specialize in fighting sirens, such as ship captains and anchormen."
As part of the required course, Li already knew all this. She yawned boredly, creating a mist on the display case.
The policewoman's face suddenly stiffened.
It's the transition from summer to autumn now, how could I possibly be exhaling white mist!
Before we knew it, the temperature in the exhibition hall had become comparable to that of winter, and some corners of the display cases were even covered with frost.
She nervously tugged at Yue Lai's sleeve, but Yue Lai gently shushed her, signaling her to be quiet.
The exhibition hall seemed endless, with historical showcases stretching infinitely into the future, while the guides recounted the past:
"Later, the expeditionary force gained the upper hand in the war by virtue of its rich knowledge in the supernatural realm. In the crucial Battle of the Raging Tides, they captured the Queen of the Sea. The most outstanding geniuses extracted her supernatural attributes, and from that day on, humanity gained another path to becoming extraordinary."
"prodigal son."
The guide proudly stated:
"The person who performed the sacrificial ceremony was the first principal of the War Academy, who was then the Imperial Physician and one of the Thirty-Six Extraordinary Warriors, the 'Anatomist'."
When humanity first left its home planet, there were only thirty-six extraordinary individuals; now, there are twelve more, and they have almost become the mainstream.
Further on, the illustrations behind the display cases gradually evolved into highly artistic oil paintings. The Siren Queen is bound by thorns, kneeling on the ground, her expression angry and pained. An elderly human in the style of ink painting tries to remove the crown from her head, but only receives disdain and ridicule in return.
Finally, the long-bearded old man raised his saber, and with a swift stroke, lifted His crown and head above his head.
Blood, endless blood, stained Serena red, the sea turned red, and the entire starry sky wept for the queen's passing.
Li's eyes gushed blood as if a dam had burst, just like the neck of the Siren Queen.
"Warren!"
Yue Lai was extremely anxious, but somehow, he was unaffected. White light shot from his eyes as he attempted to temporarily erase Li Gang's memory through a feigned act—
But the other party can't see anything!
From Li's perspective, Yue Lai suddenly disappeared from her sight, and she hurriedly called out to Lou Wen:
"Junior Lou, has the Ghost Club arrived yet?"
"What ghost society?" The stranger turned around. "This is the history research room. Please keep quiet, miss."
Li was terrified and instinctively took two steps back, only to bump into Weiswood behind him.
She slowly turned around, and her junior's face kept switching between that of a siren and a human. She gently pulled her into her arms:
"Welcome, Serena."
Li tried to circulate her blood and energy, but as a newborn calf, she couldn't even do that. An overwhelming drowsiness washed over her in the darkness.
"Yue...lai...you bastard..."
Just when she thought she was about to die, she felt a sweet taste in her mouth, and it felt oily. The bastard's face vaguely appeared before her again.
"Li, there are no records of what happened after the establishment of Serena War Academy in the school history museum."
"Huh? Is that so? Maybe it's because he played a lot of disreputable roles."
Li shook her head: "Did I just faint? Why is there so much blood on the ground!"
"That blood is fake; it seems we've already joined that ghostly organization."
"What?!"
"It's not some ghost society, it's a history research lab," the stranger in front emphasized again, tossing the key in his hand. "I finally got my hands on it, and this time we have to figure out what happened in the blank history."
"That's right!" came an encouraging voice from behind. It was a girl with short black hair. "The school's history class has always been very secretive about what happened after the establishment of Serena War Academy. I really don't know what they have to hide."
"Following the timeline, the war was almost won, yet they're cutting out the most exciting parts. That's so pointless."
Suddenly, a memory popped into Yue Lai's mind, and he said timidly, "During the Expansion War, each star system had a history that was hidden. There must be a reason for that. Is it not right for us to do this...?"
"Don't worry, what's there to be afraid of if you just take a look?"
Yue Lai already knew the two guys' destination: that area that resembled an endless corridor!
He silently calculated in his mind:
Here, time seems to be layered: reality, the past, and the past of the past, corresponding to layers one, two, and three.
"Li and I are on the second floor now; we were on the third floor just now."
"I don't know why I just got back to the second floor, but Li stayed on the third floor."
As I was pondering, the stranger uttered familiar words:
"Later, the expeditionary force gained the upper hand in the war by virtue of its rich knowledge in the supernatural realm. In the crucial Battle of the Raging Tides, they captured the Queen of the Sea, and the most outstanding warriors extracted her supernatural attributes..."
Li tilted her head: "Why does this sound familiar?"
Yue Lai stopped in his tracks; if he went any further, he would be entering the polluted area again!
"Junior, why are you stopping?"
"Senior, I think we should go back and ask the professor. There must be a reason why the college designated the latter half of the school history museum as a restricted area."
Li sensed something was wrong and secretly used his blood energy to turn around and ensure that Yue Lai would not be attacked from both sides.
Huh, why is my blood and qi so deficient?
After hearing Yue Lai's words, the stranger's face turned ferocious: "Junior, have you forgotten our original intentions?!"
"We promised to explore the unknown together and forge ahead bravely!"
"This is betrayal...it's betrayal!"
It was as if countless female demons were screaming along with him:
"I hate betrayal the most!!"
His face was covered in fine scales, his ten fingers were as sharp as white bone blades, and his body was constantly covered in slippery, transparent mucus.
Yue Lai would not sit idly by and wait for his death!
With a flick of his wrists, two short swords appeared out of thin air, one above and one below, blocking all of the monster's escape routes. One sword was aimed straight at the monster's eyes, which had no scales to protect them, while the other sword was viciously thrust towards its heart!
However, the monster simply closed its eyes abruptly. The blade aimed at its eyelids sparked and slid away in vain; the other blade was firmly gripped by one of its bony claws with a clang.
But it has another hand!
The bone claw shot out like lightning, its fingertips already touching Yue Lai's heart. Yue Lai, however, neither dodged nor evaded, but suddenly released the knife that was being held, and instead reached out with his bare hands to grab the other's face, which was covered in sticky mucus.
Everything went as he expected—the monster's claws failed to pierce the fleshy web woven by evil intentions, and his fingers were already stained with the cold, slippery liquid.
Flirting with other women!
The slime instantly transformed into a dense net, enveloping the monster's entire body. But the deep-sea monster merely stretched its body, and with a chest-expanding movement, the net crumbled inch by inch like fragile spider silk, turning back into slime that splattered all over the ground.
The smile that had just appeared on Yue Lai's lips instantly froze on his face.
On the other side, the short-haired woman suddenly transformed into a sea siren, engaging in a fierce battle with Li. Frost condensed between her fingers, turning into crystalline threads, which, as they swirled, produced a mesmerizing song, as if lamenting and yearning.
As soon as the music started, the child's mind was captivated, and Li's blood and energy surged uncontrollably, rising and falling with the rhythm of the song.
"Ta-da!"
The melody suddenly turned urgent, like the clang of metal. Li felt a sweet taste in his throat and suddenly spat out a mouthful of blood, as if he had been slammed away by an invisible giant hand, flying backward.
"Bang!"
Her back slammed heavily against the display case behind her, and she slid to the ground amidst a shattering sound, eventually managing to stay upright on one knee.
A moment later, Yue Lai also came crashing down like a kite with a broken string, slamming into the same display case, staggering and falling down beside Li.
"You've never fought one before?"
"How dare you say that to me?" Li looked at Yue Lai incredulously. How could the villain accuse him first?
"I'm the complete novice! And you're a master, possessing knowledge of five different skills!" She racked her brains for the most vicious words, finally uttering, "A pretty face but useless embroidered pillow!"
Yue Lai said sheepishly, "Theoretically speaking, I'm just a novice..."
The two deep-sea monsters drew ever closer, and Li utterly resigned herself to her fate. Countless filthy mouths converged into one sentence:
"Yue Lai, I'm unlucky to have met you."
"Don't give up! I can borrow your heart!"
"?"
Li cursed, "Do you think I'm like you! You think you can live perfectly well without a heart?!"
"I could have just lied and said you had a heart!"
Yue Lai, true to his word, had already stabbed Li in the heart before his words were even finished, while still spouting nonsense:
"Li, you're not in pain, you're not in pain at all."
"You're different from other people; your heart is on the right side."
Li gradually became drowsy, and her last thought before losing consciousness was:
"How could this guy have fooled me so easily?"
Upon discovering the food, the previously dozing Xie Xin immediately became alert. Yue Lai's left anterior chest membrane transformed into a gluttonous maw, swallowing Li's heart whole.
"Don't swallow yet, I'll feed you both later!"
After considering it for a while, Xie Xin decided that this deal was worth doing!
Yue Lai suddenly felt a surge of immense power welling up from his heart. What? Sixty percent? Sixteen percent!
The spies' skills, which were originally clumsy, were now executed with surprising fluidity. He used a knife and a stick to make up for the flaws in his swordsmanship when he only used two sides and three strikes. The young calf was even more ruthless. He then urged the White Stripe in the Waves, and in a flash, he was as close as a ghost to the female sea monster.
The blade tip precisely found the gap between the scales and silently pierced the heart. With a slight twist of the wrist, the blade severed layers of blood vessels, and with a flick, a perfectly intact heart, still dripping with warm blood, was ripped out.
Evil Heart was already waiting nearby, and he opened his mouth and swallowed the throbbing thing whole.
High returns and short cycle, it's a great deal!
Almost simultaneously, the deep-sea monster on the other side flashed behind Yue Lai, its bone claws slashing down with a whoosh. Suddenly, another face appeared behind Yue Lai's head, its cold eyes locking onto the gaps in the scales, and at the same time, it raised another knife upwards—
The monster's own claws severed it at the wrist.
The next second, its heart was pulled out by Yue Lai in almost the same way, and the evil heart swallowed it into its stomach with satisfaction once again.
Before collapsing, the two monsters let out a final, unwilling roar, then their bodies shriveled up and turned into two pools of foul-smelling slime.
Yue Lai finally breathed a sigh of relief:
"We need to get Li's heart back in as soon as possible."
"Wait, where is she?!"
