Chapter 4 Night Raid
"Parker, what happened?"
Parker sighed: "When we were hunting an antelope upstream in the river bend, we strayed into the pasture of a centaur tribe and were subsequently ambushed by their patrol."
Those four-legged monsters were faster than arrows; it took us all our strength to escape from them…
Luke was secretly surprised upon hearing this. Although he had prepared himself for the possibility of encountering monsters, he did not expect this day to come so soon.
Fortunately, I just unlocked the [Ogre Heavy Spearman], so I believe I have a good chance of defeating these wild monsters.
After bandaging and settling the wounded members of the hunting party, he immediately called out, "Amin..."
At that moment, Armin was directing several ogres to install sheep pens. Hearing Luke call him, he immediately came running over with a "rumble".
"Master, what are your orders?"
Luke handed him the "Equipment Crafting Blueprints" and the "Training Manual": "Select the best from the tribe and subject them to grueling training according to the methods taught in the manual."
In addition, have the village blacksmith melt down existing ironware and forge spears with the furnace running non-stop; the leatherworkers should cut off the thick hides of the prey and tan as much leather armor as possible... In short, build up a fully-fledged heavy spearman army as soon as possible!
"Yes, Master!"
And so, thick smoke billowed from the enormous furnace, flames occasionally shooting into the sky, and the clanging of metal echoed incessantly; the roars of ogres resounded throughout the training grounds, reverberating across the heavens and earth…
Five days later, the centaur pastures upstream of the river bend.
Countless tall leather tents stretched as far as the eye could see.
Outside the tent, some people were cooking in large pots, and several patrol teams were patrolling nearby—from any perspective, this group of monsters was an organized tribe, not a disorganized mob.
On the grassland, dozens of centaurs, armed with hunting bows, galloped wildly, hunting their prey hidden in the bushes.
A hare peeked out briefly, then darted into its burrow in a flash... In the blink of an eye, an arrow pierced its body, pinning it firmly to the ground.
The rabbit was scooped up by the archers, and loud cheers and applause erupted around them.
At that moment, in the dense forest not far away, a pair of keen eyes were watching them intently.
"His arrows never miss! Centaurs... they truly are a formidable race."
Luke immediately withdrew his gaze and sighed, "It seems I underestimated them... Armin, how many soldiers do we have now?"
"Due to time and equipment limitations, there are currently only 50 ogre heavy spearmen available for deployment on the battlefield; on the human side, there are approximately 400 unarmored riders equipped with hunting bows and short swords, who have been riding horses for many years and are all highly skilled riders."
"In other words, I will have to use more than four hundred warriors to fight against this tribe with at least a thousand men."
Even the belligerent and arrogant Armin had to acknowledge the situation: "It's still too much of a stretch. In my opinion, we should wait until we've trained a hundred ogre heavy spearmen..."
"It's too late." Luke shook his head with difficulty. "This centaur tribe already knows we're here and could attack at any moment... Every day we delay, we become more dangerous."
He squinted and carefully observed the camp of men and horses again, gradually gaining a better understanding of the situation:
The centaur camp had neither fences nor watchtowers for defense; it appeared extremely loose, seemingly offering an opportunity for attack…
After a long pause, Luke said, slowly and deliberately, "Tonight, gather our troops and we'll raid the camp!"
------
That night, at the darkest hour.
The camp of the centaurs in the river bend was quiet, with the occasional soft snores coming from some of the tents.
No one could have imagined that danger was already creeping in...
"Do you see that? That's where the chieftain's tent is located, the lord of this centaur tribe."
In the hidden jungle, Luke pointed to the largest tent in the camp.
"This night raid is our only chance to survive in this chaotic world. Success is the only option; failure is not an option!" he said grimly.
Amin and Rogge stiffened and immediately bowed their heads: "We understand, we will obey your orders!"
Luke hesitated for a moment, then said, "This time we've launched almost a full-scale attack. Although our forces are slightly outnumbered, seizing the initiative still gives us a great chance of victory! Ready... let's move out!"
Several arrows, glowing with fire, flew in from a distance and landed in several tents.
Soon, the burning flames tore through the silent night.
"Brothers, kill!"
Hundreds of human riders, armed with machetes, stormed into the rows of tents from both flanks.
According to Luke's battle plan, the cavalry used iron hooks to pull down the tents during the raid, revealing the sleeping men and horses inside.
Amin then led his ogre heavy spearmen in a frontal assault on the camp, unleashing a massacre!
Through these days of labor training, the ogres have become skilled at cooperating with humans in combat, and their teamwork is quite seamless.
Dense, heavy spears pointed diagonally forward, like an avalanche sweeping across the land, relentlessly stabbing; the panicked centaurs were instantly pierced mercilessly by the spears attacking from all directions, blood gushing out like a fountain.
These heavy spearmen, having undergone rigorous training according to the "Training Manual," had long since become numb. Now, they simply thrust forward mechanically, reaping countless centaur lives...
The great "God of Slaughter," Amin, led a group of lesser "Gods of Slaughter" ogres, raising their heavy spears high and advancing like a wall, crushing everything in their path.
Rogue and the other human riders brandished their steel swords, weaving through the camp unstoppable. They had long been suppressed, allowing themselves to be slaughtered by the high elves… Now, finally free, they couldn't help but let out long howls from their horses as they fought with unbridled fervor.
Even though the centaurs were all strong and powerful, they were caught off guard and unable to form a united force. They were slaughtered by the combined forces of ogres and humans who had gained a local numerical advantage, and were powerless to fight back.
Soon the camp was littered with corpses, and blood mist fell like rain.
While leading his human riders in a charge to cut down the manhorses, Luke kept a close eye on the battle... He never expected that the [Ogre Heavy Spearmen] would display such great power on their first appearance on the battlefield, achieving such impressive results.
He was overjoyed, his blood boiling with excitement: "Victory is just ahead! Kill the centaur chieftain!"
As Luke personally led his team to tear a bloody path, more and more corpses piled up beneath their feet, and they fought their way to the center of the camp.
The battle cries had awakened the centaur warriors in the rear who had not yet been attacked. They drew their weapons and rushed out of their tents to engage the enemies who had attacked their homeland.
The main tent flap was opened, and the centaur chieftain emerged, still half-asleep. Upon seeing Luke's men, who exuded murderous intent, he instantly sobered up considerably.
He grabbed his trusted aide and demanded urgently, "Where are the enemies from? How many are there?"
"Chief, it's humans... they must be reinforcements brought by the hunting party we ambushed last time!"
The chief was both shocked and furious. Seeing the overwhelming force of the enemy, he knew that if his people continued to fight individually, they would inevitably be defeated piecemeal by the enemy...
He immediately blew his horn, and the centaur warriors nearby gathered around upon hearing it.
The chieftain hastily gathered nearly two hundred men, forming a formidable cavalry force, and headed straight for Luke, who was charging ahead not far away.
"Damn humans, I'll make you pay with your blood!"
