Chapter 15 The First Pot of Gold

Seemingly sensing Luke's doubts about his abilities, Mobutu confidently patted his chest:

"Mr. Luke, while my strength may not be apparent on the battlefield, when it comes to making a fortune, no one can match me!"

There's really nothing to doubt about that...

Thinking that Bill's sale of iron ore had actually attracted Mysella, Luke did indeed need some "professionals" to engage in border trade and earn funds for the "Free People" provisional government in the Wildlands to operate normally and cover military expenses.

"Since you're so confident, then I'll leave the business to you... This will free up Bill to focus on intelligence gathering and diplomatic affairs."

"No problem. But before that, please give me all the information on our commodities, including the trading volume over the past month, the current inventory on the market, market prices, and the purchase price around the Hun River."

My business group needs in-depth analysis.

When Mobutu mentioned them, the twenty-odd goblins around him cackled and groaned, seemingly in agreement.

For the next three days, Bill sent the intelligence data back to Mobutu in installments.

Mobutu locked himself and his group of goblin merchants in a tent, eating and sleeping there, seemingly wanting to thoroughly understand the border trading area...

On the fourth day, Mobuto excitedly invited Luke over, eager to show off the results of his work over the past few days.

"Sir, please look here. Recently, the prices of furs at Scarborough Market have been fluctuating greatly, and there is often a shortage... There is even a structural shortage of furs such as fox fur and antelope fur."

Luke chuckled upon hearing this: "That's to be expected. We shut down the largest leather workshop around White Hart Castle, so fur products have naturally become rare commodities."

Mobutu said with a smug look, "That's right, our business opportunity has arrived!"

Coats and hats made of fox fur and antelope fur are highly favored by the upper elves and have extremely high profit margins.

Since we need to make leather armor, the skinning tables and tanning tanks in the wooden fortress are readily available, and we can use them to produce fur as well…

As for the supply of raw materials, there's even less to worry about. Besides hunting, the nearby centaur tribes have large stockpiles of unsold materials. We can also buy them at lower prices in the surrounding areas, process them, and then resell them for several times the price!

"Talented!"

Luke's eyes lit up, and he gave a thumbs-up, praising, "Mobuto, you figured that out...you're a true business genius!"

Mobutu proudly adjusted his tie: "Sir, your praise greatly encourages me, but please let me finish—"

My plan is to first monopolize the fox fur market in Scarborough, and then, when the time is right, sell half of the stock at five times the original price.

Then they would inflate the price of the furs further, and sell the remaining half... In this way, they could maximize their profits.

Luke nodded in agreement: "Let's do it your way... So, how much start-up capital do you need?"

"Only 30 gold coins are needed!"

A glint of shrewdness flashed in Luke's eyes: "How much exactly?"

Mobutu swallowed hard, then chuckled awkwardly, "Um, I miscalculated... 20 gold coins should be enough!"

Luke didn't answer, he just looked at him quietly.

It seems this guy is no pushover...

Wiping the sweat from his brow, Mobutu quickly pretended to flip through the account book, and after a while, he looked up and said:

"Sir, after careful calculation and further negotiation with the centaur tribe, I estimate 10 gold coins should be enough!"

"Alright! Go get the money from Bill... Also, don't try anything funny in front of me again."

"Don't worry, sir, I understand."

……

After the goblin merchant group's frenzied buying spree, fox pelts soon disappeared from Scarborough Market.

A fine snow-white fox pelt, which previously cost 200 copper coins, has risen to 300, 500... and even soared to 1 silver coin, yet it remains priceless and unavailable.

The clothing store owners searched high and low, but still couldn't find a decent piece of leather. Watching their hard-earned money slip away was worse than death for them.

Seeing that the time was right, a little-known "Mobuto" fox fur exchange quietly opened in a prime location in the market, filled with a dazzling array of fox furs in various colors.

On opening day, the threshold was almost worn down by people... and the fox furs were all sold out.

Seeing that the results were even better than expected, Mobutu simply divided the inventory into three parts.

The first segment is sold at five times the price;

The second section was doubled again and sold at ten times the price;

The third step involves adding another round of leverage, selling at twenty times the price…

Mobutu sold all the fox pelts he had, earning over 200 gold coins, which was Luke's first pot of gold!

However, the matter did not end there.

Despite manipulation by "opportunistic" individuals, the price of fox fur continued to soar, even reaching fifty times its original value at one point!

A normal trade transaction has turned into a game of "passing the parcel," and it remains to be seen who will ultimately benefit from it...

Mobutu originally wanted to chase the price higher and reap another wave of profits, but Luke stopped him.

"Don't be too greedy, we've already made enough! I don't want you to lose all the money before I even have a chance to enjoy it."

Mobutu nodded, seemingly understanding, and decisively abandoned this "red ocean," beginning his search for his next money-making target...

------

River Bend, Wood Fort Base Camp.

The adults were busy with farm work, and the children, left unattended, gathered together on the grass, playing and passing the ball happily.

Suddenly a strange gust of wind blew, and the ball slipped from his grasp, rolling "roll" to the Messiah's feet.

Lana trotted up to her, smiled shyly, and said, "Big sister elf, this is our ball."

Seeing her innocent and adorable nature, Messiah picked up the ball and handed it to her, affectionately patting her head: "Good girl... go play."

Just then, a voice came from behind: "Looks like you've already gotten along well with them."

Looking back, Messiah couldn't help but chide in playfully, "Do you always have to scare people behind their backs every time you speak?"

The person who arrived was Luke.

He sat down next to Messiah and asked with a hint of concern, "Are you settling in well here? Is there anything you're not used to?"

Messiah chuckled self-deprecatingly: "For a prisoner, that's quite merciful... but now I'm actually somewhat grateful to you."

If you hadn't brought me here, I wouldn't have come into contact with such different people.

I used to learn from textbooks that humans are an inferior race, barbaric and ignorant, only capable of killing, incapable of developing technology, and even lacking slightly complex thinking.

After our ship landed here, we taught them knowledge and brought them technology, which allowed mankind to know what civilization is.

Even from what I saw with my own eyes in the slave markets—the people there, how should I put it, seemed numb and ignorant, utterly incapable of communication…so I assumed that all of humanity was like that.”

Luke bluntly stated: "Humans weren't born this way; you're the ones who made us this way..."

A proper slave shouldn't have thoughts, shouldn't be worthy of thinking—isn't that exactly what you want? Now, this has become your excuse to discriminate against us and display your superiority.

Messiah blushed: "Actually, I also doubted whether what the book said was true."

Before the arrival of the High Elves, humans also had kingdoms and laws. How could they be a non-intelligent race incapable of developing civilization?

It wasn't until I saw the free humans here, who were no different from us... that I became even more certain of my conjecture.

She suddenly stood up, looking at Luke with hopeful eyes: "Please let me go... I want to tell the world everything about this place, so that all elves can understand humans and eliminate prejudice against them!"

"Lord Luke, you're here!"

Luke was about to speak when Bill rushed over, looking anxious, and said:

"It's bad! Scouts report that a force of several thousand men has entered the wilderness and is heading towards the river bend."

Luke and Messiah asked almost simultaneously, "Where did this army come from?"

"...It's the High Elves' army!"
